Changes In Cadmium And Nickle Adsorption Over Time In A Periodically Submerged Soil, Elly Kirsten Triegel

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study was to measure the rate of change of adsorptive properties of soils and sediments after submergence. Soil samples were collected from a cove which is inundated periodically each year. Samples were collected prior to submergence and analyzed for pH, Eh, organic carbon content, readily available iron and manganese oxides, free iron and manganese oxides , surface area, and the amount of cadmium and nickel adsorbed at pH 4 and the pH of the soil.

The amounts of nickel and cadmium adsorption were then investigated separately, in a 0.1 M NaNO3 solution at the two …

A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton Dec 1984

A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton

Doctoral Dissertations

Many critics have argued that modern poetry is most comprehensively understood as an expansion rather than a rejection of the romantic tradition. Simply stated, their claim is that the romantic lyric, in which the mode of perceiving rather than the perception itself is the central subject of the poem, remains the dominant form in modern and post-modern poetry. In general, contemporary poetry also presents itself as an act of the mind encountering and evaluating the external world. As a poetic movement influenced by feminist thinking, contemporary women's poetry grounds itself in the romantic tradition while deviating from it in ways …

Effects Of Cooking Method, Fat Level, And Days On Feed On The Objective And Sensory Characteristics Of Restructured Steaks, Carol A. Costello Dec 1984

Effects Of Cooking Method, Fat Level, And Days On Feed On The Objective And Sensory Characteristics Of Restructured Steaks, Carol A. Costello

Doctoral Dissertations

Top rounds from steers fed grain 0, 28, 56, or 84 days were removed and flaked in a Urschel Comitrol containing a plate with 1.9-cm openings. Fat (beef plates approximately 55% fat) from animals fed grain was finely ground. Flaked meat and fat were mixed and formed into 227-g restructured steaks with 15%, 20%, or 25% fat. Steaks were cooked in a microwave oven on a preheated browning dish or broiled in a conventional oven to an internal temperature of 73oC ± 2oC or 73oC, respectively.

Greater cooking losses were exhibited for steaks heated …

The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn Dec 1984

The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn

Doctoral Dissertations

Many musical works have been based upon Don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Since the publication of the novel in 1605 (Part I) and 1615 (Part II), composers of all eras have sought to translate the story of the knight-errant into the universal language of music. The genres and the musical interpretations have varied. But the interest in Cervantes' masterpiece as a topic of musical expression has endured through nearly four centuries.

After a brief introduction to the references to music in the novel itself, selected Quixote compositions from each century are discussed in this …

Dynamic Behavior Of Boiling Water Reactors, Jose March-Leuba Dec 1984

Dynamic Behavior Of Boiling Water Reactors, Jose March-Leuba

Doctoral Dissertations

A study of the basic processes involved in boiling water nuclear reactor dynamics is presented. The main emphasis of this research has been placed on the physical interpretation of these processes. It is shown that this type of reactors have two regimes of operation: linear, during normal operation, and nonlinear, if they become unstable due to the thermohydraulic feedback. Both of these regimes are studied using low-order physical models.

The main result obtained from the linear study is the pole-zero configuration of the reactivity-to-power transfer function. It is determined that three zeros and four poles are needed to properly represent …

The Occurrence And Cause Of Midsummer Zooplankton Declines: Cyanobacteria And The Implications For Freshwater Ecology, Nicholas K. Brown Dec 1984

The Occurrence And Cause Of Midsummer Zooplankton Declines: Cyanobacteria And The Implications For Freshwater Ecology, Nicholas K. Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

The current paradigm of lacustrine ecology is that zooplankton communities are structured by the nature am intensity of predation upon them. One corollary to this paradigm is that the observed phenomenon of midsummer zooplankton decline is caused by predation. A second is the hypothesis of "biomanipulation." One aspect of "biomanipulation" proposes that in certain circumstances the removal of predators of zooplankton might result in reduced algal biomass. The assumption of both these corollaries is that aquatic food webs are manipulable from the top. 'The data supporting predation-caused midsummer declines and biomanipulation are examined analytically and theoretically by considering biomass, foraging …

Callus Formation And Somatic Embryogenesis : From Leaf Cultures Of Orchardgrass (Dactylis Glomerata L.), Gary E. Hanning

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate callus formation and plant regeneration from orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) leaf tissue cultured in vitro. Vegetative tillers were removed from greenhouse grown plants and the two or three innermost leaves were split longitudinally at the midrib. Beginning at the basal end, six sections 3 mm long were cut from each leaf half and plated on a Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium with 30 μM 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid (dicamba).

Initially, leaves from 86 plants were cultured and 14 plants produced a callus which regenerated plants via organogenesis. There was a decline in the frequency …

Yield And Selected Chemical And Morphological Responses Of Several Soybean Cultivars To Soil Ph, Nuri H. Al-Mohammadi Dec 1984

Yield And Selected Chemical And Morphological Responses Of Several Soybean Cultivars To Soil Ph, Nuri H. Al-Mohammadi

Doctoral Dissertations

Yield responses of soybeans to soil pH have been difficult to demonstrate on most soils in Tennessee. Yet, liming has consistently been recommended as a practice to maintain productive soils near neutral. A study was conducted with 21 soybean cultivars on a productive West Tennessee soil to evaluate several chemical and morphological characteristics of these cultivars and determine which of the characteristics had any impact on yield.

Twenty-one soybean cultivars belonging to three maturity groups (IV, V, and VI) were planted in three soil pH levels of 5.3, 5.9, and 6.8 in a split-plot arrangement of treatments in a randomized …

Doctoral Dissertations

Interference studies with annual grasses were conducted in 1982 and 1983 in burley and dark fire-cured tobaccos (Nicotiana tabacum L.) at Greeneville and Springfield, Tennessee, respectively. Treatments consisted of annual grass-free periods of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks from transplanting and 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks of interference followed by removal of all weeds and maintenance of weed-free conditions. A season long annual grass-free treatment and a season long annual grass-infested treatment served as controls. Annual grass-free periods were established and maintained by hand-hoeing. In 1982, the critical annual grass-free period and critical duration …

Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman Dec 1984

Regurgitation By The Face Fly, Musca Autumnalis Degeer, Russell E. Coleman

Masters Theses

Face flies normally began regurgitating within 10 minutes after feeding, and continued for periods of up to 240 minutes. Almost 100 percent of flies fed a concentrated (4.8%) solution of trypticase-soy broth were observed regurgitating. The deposition of droplets onto a substrate was almost never observed, indicating that the regurgitation is not analogous to vomiting. The droplet exuded contained from five to ten percent of the food consumed, with the crop the source of the fluid. The crop is also the most likely destination of the regurgitated materiel. The purpose of this phenomenon is still not clear. However, the fluid …

Petrology Of The Farmington Gabbro-Metagabbro Complex, North Carolina, James Thomas Harden Dec 1984

Petrology Of The Farmington Gabbro-Metagabbro Complex, North Carolina, James Thomas Harden

Masters Theses

The Farmington gabbro-metagabbro complex is located along the western margin of the Charlotte belt of North Carolina. At least twp or more intrusions occur within the complex. The Farmington gabbroic intrusion is postmetamorphic and contains plagioclase, hornblende, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and olivine. Small amounts of magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, hematite, hercynitic spinel, and biotite occur. Textures are hypidiomorphic granular to hypidiomorphic inequigranular. Four types of gabbroic rocks are present; hornblende gabbronite, olivine-hornblende gabbronorite, hornblende norite, and olivine-hornblende norite, with olivine-hornblende gabbronorite predominating. A limited range of progressive differentiation is indicated by restricted increases in FeO/(FeO +MgO) ratios for mafic silicates …

History And Distribution Of Brook Trout In The Appalachian Region Of Tennessee, Rick Dwain Bivens Dec 1984

History And Distribution Of Brook Trout In The Appalachian Region Of Tennessee, Rick Dwain Bivens

Masters Theses

Brook trout (Salevlinus fontinalis) populations have been declining in the southern Appalachians and especially in Tennessee since 1900. To assess the loss of range of this southern trout, various agencies have inventoried most of the major trout streams in Tennessee over the past 10 years. To date, however, these surveys have remained disjunct and in some cases overlapping.

Survey reports and field data of brook trout inventories made from 1974 to 1984 were examined to determine the current distribution in Tennessee. Brook trout currently inhabit 275.6 kilometers in 135 streams found in eight east Tennessee counties. Brook trout …

Bear habitat use was analyzed in relation to timber management parameters available in the U. S. Forrest Service "Continuous Inventory of Stand Condition" and other parameters derived from stand and topographic maps. Chi-square …

The Effects Of Pre- And Post-Transit Potassium Levels, Feedlot Receiving Diets, And Levamisole Injection On Stressed Bull And Steer Calves, Frank K. Brazle Dec 1984

The Effects Of Pre- And Post-Transit Potassium Levels, Feedlot Receiving Diets, And Levamisole Injection On Stressed Bull And Steer Calves, Frank K. Brazle

Doctoral Dissertations

In a March 1983 trial, 125 bulls and 139 steer calves were used to compare bulls castrated at feedlot (FL) arrival (BULLS) with steers, to evaluate feeding supplemental potassium (K) at the order-buyer barn (OBB) for three days before shipment or at FL, to compare a 40% concentrate (CONG) receiving diet with a hay (HAY) diet, and to evaluate the effect of injection with levamisole (LEV) at OBB and FL arrival. Mortality was higher (P<.05) in BULLS (13.2%) than in steers (7.7%) and higher in CONG bulls than in HAY bulls.

Steers gained more (P<.10) (12.1 kg) from purchase to FL-28, had higher (P<.10) antibody titers for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) at OBB, and greater (P<.10) change in serum lymphocyte blastogenesis from OBB to FL-28 than BULLS. Calves fed a 1.5% K diet at OBB had less shrink during the 24-hour transit than those fed a 1.1% K diet. FL gains of calves fed a 1.1% K and a 1.7% K receiving diet were similar (P>.10).

Calf breed type affected mortality. Mortality of white-faced, feather-necked, red, medium-frame calves (WF) (18.3%) was higher (P<.10) than that of black, medium-frame calves (BL) (2.8%). WF calves required 30% more clinical treatments and had higher temperatures than did BL and large-frame calves. Injection of LEV at OBB or FL reduced mortality 6.6% and increased BVD and IBR antibody titers. Gains during the 28-day receiving period were similar for the GONG and HAY calves but the GONG calves gained more (P<.05) during the subsequent silage period. Mortality tended to be higher in CONC calves (12.3%) than in HAY calves (8.5%).

The Effect Of A Prostaglandin F₂Alpha Analogue, Fenprostalene, And Oxytocin On Both In Vivo And Isolated Uterine Motility In The Cow, William Herbert Byrd Dec 1984

The Effect Of A Prostaglandin F₂Alpha Analogue, Fenprostalene, And Oxytocin On Both In Vivo And Isolated Uterine Motility In The Cow, William Herbert Byrd

Masters Theses

With the discovery of the uterokinetic properties of prostaglandin F2α much interest in the possible application of this substance in the expulsion of retained fetal membranes has arisen. Although the bovine uterus has been found to become refractory to PGF2α, the development of a high-activity, long half-life PGF2α analogue, fenprostalene, has renewed interest in the prostaglandin's usefulness in the expulsion of retained fetal membranes.

Uterine motility was measured on two consecutive days in eight early-postpartum and six open cycling cows; and in open isolated bovine uterine horns by the intrauterine balloon technique. Fenprostalene and/or …

Platelet Aggregation Studies In Canine Cyclic Hematopoiesis, Charlotte M. Boney Dec 1984

Platelet Aggregation Studies In Canine Cyclic Hematopoiesis, Charlotte M. Boney

Masters Theses

Investigation of platelet function in dogs with cyclic hematopoiesis (OH) revealed a platelet aggregation disorder. Collagen-induced aggregation of CH dog platelets was significantly below normal, although normal aggregation in response to ADP was observed. The failure to aggregate in response to collagen was not influenced by platelet size. Aggregation was particularly low on days 2, 3, 4 and 14 of the 14-day neutrophil cycle which is typical of CH dogs. The lack of response to collagen suggests a defect in the arachidonic acid pathway of platelet metabolism since platelet-generated thromboxane B2 was significantly (~70%) below control levels. Platelets from dogs …

Visual Preferences Of A Forest Trail Environment, Brian Edward Keyes Dec 1984

Visual Preferences Of A Forest Trail Environment, Brian Edward Keyes

Masters Theses

Recreation resource managers are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of the visual resource to recreationists. Hiking forest trails is an extremely popular recreational activity; however, little information exists concerning how visitors visually perceive forest trails and how resource managers might manage these environments to enhance the benefits derived from a hiking experience. The major objective of the study was to determine the visual preferences of visitors to a forest trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Of particular interest was the relationship of preference and familiarity for various scenes along the trail.

An environmental preference and visual …

Refinement Of Loss-On-Ignition Method For Organic Matter Content In Highly Amended Soils, Ellen R. Mc Donald

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to refine the loss-on-ignition method of organic matter determination based on the previous findings of David Cochran (1980). An additional objective was to develop a pretreatment of organic matter for the reduction or prevention of error due to sample loss from violent eruption caused by rapid exposure to high ignition temperatures.

Pretreatment tests indicated that precharring samples at a temperature of 300° C for 10 minutes prevented loss of samples due to violent eruption at high ignition temperatures. The three sands and eight organic materials were then heated at different temperatures for different time …
