An Experimental Study Of Viscoelastic Flow In A Conical Entrance Region, Raymond Leslie Boles Jr. Dec 1967

An Experimental Study Of Viscoelastic Flow In A Conical Entrance Region, Raymond Leslie Boles Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

An experimental study has been made of the pressure drop in the conical entrance region to a capillary tube. Two fluids, a Newtonian oil and a viscoelastic polymer solution, were used. The entrance half angle was varied from 10.8° to 90°; the wall shear rate in the capillary was varied from 50 sec.-1 to 1000 sec.-1.

For Newtonian flow, Oka's creeping flow solution was shown to be of the correct form to predict viscous pressure drop effects, although it gave quantitative agreement only at the larger half angles (46.7°). An adaptation of this solution to the power …

The Influence Of Dietary Protein On Serum Lipid Levels Of Premenopausal Women, Ellen Speiden Parham Dec 1967

The Influence Of Dietary Protein On Serum Lipid Levels Of Premenopausal Women, Ellen Speiden Parham

Doctoral Dissertations

(From the Introduction)

Serum lipid levels of young women are of particular interest because, in a population riddled with atherosclerosis, premenopausal women seem to have a relative immunity both to severe hyperlipidemia and to those diseases thought to be related to it. The diet of this heterogeneous population is characterized by high intakes of animal protein, animal fat, and sugars.

Research has shown that the type and quantity of fat and carbohydrate have varying degrees of influence on serum lipid levels. Various micronutrients are also implicated. Animal experiments using wide ranges of protein intake suggest that under some …

Synthesis And Properties Of Diorganomagnesium Compounds, Conrad William Kamienski Dec 1967

Synthesis And Properties Of Diorganomagnesium Compounds, Conrad William Kamienski

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Although dialkylmagnesium compounds have been known for over a hundred years, relatively little effort has been directly expended on these reagents per se; much of what we know about magnesium alkyls has been an outgrowth of previous studies concerned with the nature of the Grignard reagent. Only recently has any effort been made to elaborate on methods for preparing these reagents, to determine carefully their physical and chemical properties, and to develop practical uses for these reagents. It has been the purpose of the present study to review the presently known methods of preparation of dialkylmagnesium compounds, to …

An Analytic Study Of Microlayer Evaporation And Related Bubble Growth Effects In Nucleate Boiling, Gerald Steven Dzakowic Dec 1967

An Analytic Study Of Microlayer Evaporation And Related Bubble Growth Effects In Nucleate Boiling, Gerald Steven Dzakowic

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Nucleate boiling heat transfer is of technical interest since it allows a high heat flux with only a relatively small temperature difference. The demand for a better understanding of the behavior of a liquid as it exceeds its saturation temperature and changes to vapor has been the result of design problems in liquid cooled rocket nozzles and nuclear reactor cores. Moreover, to improve the performance of these high heat flux systems an understanding and control of the phenomena of boiling must be achieved. This dissertation is an attempt to establish the criteria for the heat and mass transfer processes …

The Comparison Of Commercially Bred Egg Laying Stocks With One Advanced Generation Of The Respective Stocks, Robert James Mackin Dec 1967

The Comparison Of Commercially Bred Egg Laying Stocks With One Advanced Generation Of The Respective Stocks, Robert James Mackin

Masters Theses

The increase in egg production in the last 20 to 30 years has been due to improved nutrition, management and the use of hybrid chickens; crossbreds, strain crosses, inorosses and in-crossbreds. The commercial poultryman, as a rule, no longer produces his own replacement stock from his existing flock. He generally obtains new stock each year from the commercial breeders' outlets. It is generally thought that if hybrids produced by these breeding systems were used to produce replacement pullets there would be a significant reduction in performance and an increase in variation. It is assumed that hybrid vigor expressed by these …

Migration Patterns Of Young Adults Reared In Jackson County, Tennessee, Charles Martin Farmer Dec 1967

Migration Patterns Of Young Adults Reared In Jackson County, Tennessee, Charles Martin Farmer

Masters Theses

Most Tennessee counties have experienced a net outmigration of persons in recent decades. For example, net outmigration for Tennessee was over one-fourth of a million persons from 1950 to 1960 or half of the level of natural population increase during this period. During the 1950-60 decade, 86 of the 95 counties had a net outmigration of persons. In 59 counties outmigration was sufficient to result in an aggregate population decline. Counties experiencing greatest population declines are largely rural containing few urban centers.

The questions of who leaves and who stays in low income rural areas and the effects of leaving …

Effects Of Selected Variables On Prices Received For Calves In The Brownsville Demonstrational Feeder Calf Sales, George Ira Sellers Dec 1967

Effects Of Selected Variables On Prices Received For Calves In The Brownsville Demonstrational Feeder Calf Sales, George Ira Sellers

Masters Theses

The feeder calf sales in Brownsville, Tennessee, have established themselves as an important part of the livestock enterprise in the south western part of Tennessee. These sales were developed in response to the needs of farmers with small herds of cows, generally from 20 to 30 head, to offer attractive lots of feeder calves in large enough groups to attract buyers and successfully compete with the larger producers of the West. Farm income from feeder calves sold in the fall sales has risen from $33,308 in 1955 to $529,858 in 1965. During this 11-year period the number of calves sold …

An Investigation Of Total And 35s-Labeled Mucopolysaccharides In Intestinal Wall Kidney Of Cattle, Sheep And Swine, Robert Kerns Berry

Doctoral Dissertations

Mucopolysaccharides (MPS) occur in the ground substance of connective tissue and have been isolated and identified from many diverse types of tissue. Because MPS have recently been shown to be associated with numerous physiological and pathological processes, interest has tremendously increased in their metabolic synthesis, functions and degradation. As MPS have the ability to bind water and cations, they are essential for the maintenance of an extracellular homeostatic environment. Regulation of water reabsorption in the kidney, lubricant for joints, regulation of cell permeability and involvement in the calcification processes of bone formation are other metabolic processes in which MPS have …

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this experimental investigation was to document the turbulent mixing of subsonic axisymmetric hydrogen and air streams at velocity ratios which have not been previously reported. Special emphasis is placed on [1] determining the effect of velocity ratio and density gradients on the centerline decay of composition, velocity, and total enthalpy, and on the composition, velocity, and total enthalpy profile shapes, and [2] presenting nondimensional composition, velocity, and total enthalpy relationships which are indicative of the turbulent Prandtl, Lewis, and Schmidt numbers.

Prediction Of Animal Performance From Chemical Analyses And In Vitro Digestibility Data, John Roland Plummer Dec 1967

Prediction Of Animal Performance From Chemical Analyses And In Vitro Digestibility Data, John Roland Plummer

Masters Theses

Evaluation of forages is expensive and often time consuming. Since feed cost is one of the most expensive items in milk production, the use of a good forage in the dairy ration has long been recognized as valuable and economical; therefore, it is of interest to the dairyman that accurate, fast, and economical methods of forage evaluation be available.

Well conducted feeding and digestion trials have been recognized as two of the best methods of forage evaluation; however, the time involved, facilities-required, and amount of feed needed to conduct feeding and digestion trials limit the number of forages that can …

Effect Of Various Commercial Enzymes On The Clarification And Composition Of Sorgo Juice, Lucila Sandoval-Rodriguez Dec 1967

Effect Of Various Commercial Enzymes On The Clarification And Composition Of Sorgo Juice, Lucila Sandoval-Rodriguez

Masters Theses

Sorgo sirup is made from the raw, whole juice extracted from the stalk of Sorghum vulgare by passing them through a mill, removing the impurities, and concentrating the juice by evaporation. High quality sirup is light colored, mild flavored, clear, with high viscosity and no crystallization (3,10,18,28).

One of the major problems in production of high quality sorgo sirup is the removal or alteration of substances which would impart undesirable characteristics to the final product. Impurities are present in the juice as dissolved and undissolved solids; insoluble particles can be separated by physical means, whereas colloidal substances require other methods …

The Effect Of Fasting On Tissue Shrinkage And Some Of Its Mechanisms In Rats, Robert Y. Tsai Dec 1967

The Effect Of Fasting On Tissue Shrinkage And Some Of Its Mechanisms In Rats, Robert Y. Tsai

Masters Theses

Ante-mortem fasting long has been recognized as a sound practice for meat animals. However, the length of a feasible fasting time is not well established. There are two advantages of fasting meat animals before slaughter. First, it is more difficult to thoroughly bleed and eviscerate the animal if it has been fed, watered and/or severely excited immediately prior to slaughter. In addition, fiery fat and dark colored muscle may occur. Secondly, from a monetary standpoint, annual feed consumption, particularly in large meat packing companies, may be quite costly in preslaughter periods. In fact, the expenditure for feed and labor totals …

Metabolism Of Selenium-75 In The Erythrocyte Of Growing Sheep And Swine, Gene Withrow Dec 1967

Metabolism Of Selenium-75 In The Erythrocyte Of Growing Sheep And Swine, Gene Withrow

Masters Theses

Selenium, recognized as both a toxic and an essential dietary element to the mammalian organism, has been involved in many studies of mammalian metabolism designed to evaluate its role in biological systems. Early research with selenium was very difficult due to the complex analytical techniques necessary for the detection of elemental selenium in submicroamounts. As radioactive tracer techniques were perfected, biological research with selenium became much more simple.

One very important use of a selenium isotope (75Se) tracer technique is the study of the incorporation of selenium into tissue proteins. Selenium-75 has been shown to be incorporated into …

Growing Corn, Cotton, And Soybeans In Soil Heavily Infested With Johnsongrass, Kenneth W. Kemp

Masters Theses

Johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense L. ) was first introduced into the United States from Turkey in 1830 hy Governor Means of South Caro-lina. Colonel William Johnson was the first to cultivate the grass extensively and it was named for him (27). Although some economic uses have been found for Johnsongrass, it has become one of the most serious weeds in row crops in the southern states. Johnsongrass is usually found on the better farmland in Tennessee and is usually in direct competition with corn (Zea mays L.), cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), and soybeans (Glycine max B.), the major agronomic crops of …

The Effect Of Light And Moisture On Cotton Fruiting Habits And Yield, Grady Eugene Neely Dec 1967

The Effect Of Light And Moisture On Cotton Fruiting Habits And Yield, Grady Eugene Neely

Masters Theses

The value of a cotton crop is closely related to the yield per acre. Although the expenses of producing an acre of cotton vary somewhat from farmer to farmer, those factors affecting yield are the ones that determine profit. Most farmers of today follow established management practices in growing cotton so there is little variation from one year to the next in this respect. However, yields may vary greatly from year to year. Although diseases and insects may from time to time affect yield, the different climatic conditions under which plants grow cause significant yield variations among years. The process …

Evaluation Of Fish Meals And Their Effect On Fatty Acid Deposition In Broilers Fat, Walid Abdul Rauf Barakat Dec 1967

Evaluation Of Fish Meals And Their Effect On Fatty Acid Deposition In Broilers Fat, Walid Abdul Rauf Barakat

Masters Theses

For a long time, fish meal has been recognized as a feed of high nutritive value because of its content of high quality protein, essential amino acids, unidentified growth factors, vitamins, minerals, and energy. The fish meal is obtained through the "fish reduction process," which con-sists essentially of grinding, cooking, pressing, and drying of either whole fish or fish scrap. The most common species of fish used in the commercial manufacturing of fish meal are the herring, menhaden, anch-ovie, and pilchards. But by far the most important American source of fish for meal is the menhaden. It supplies approx-imately 75 …

The Effect Of Several Variables On The Texture Of Freeze-Dried Formulated Strawberry Slices, James Franklin Amos Dec 1967

The Effect Of Several Variables On The Texture Of Freeze-Dried Formulated Strawberry Slices, James Franklin Amos

Masters Theses

Freeze-dried slices of natural strawberries are rather fragile and susceptible to disintegration during packaging and handling while in the dry state. In addition they rapidly lose their integrity and become very flaccid during the process of rehydration. Little work has been done on these two aspects of the freeze-drying of the straw-berry . Wegener et al. (213)* used low methoxyl pectin, a kelp extrac-tive, and an Irish moss extractive with frozen strawberries. Murphy et al. (137) studied the effect of low methoxyl pectin on the texture of frozen strawberries. Hanson et al. (67) investigated the effect of additives such as …

Land Reform In China (1911-1953), Chen-Hung Keong

Masters Theses

[From Chapter I]

The significance of the Chinese land reform consists in the elimination of the landlord-gentry class and redistribution of land among the peasantry. It is, therefore, necessary to evaluate the following matters, before discussing land reform itself.

1. Since Confucianism has dominated the Chinese minds for about two thousand years, it will be useful to examine its impact on both the landlord-gentry class and the peasantry.

2. In the Chinese history, the landlord-gentry class constantly played an important and active role in social, economic and political affairs. A study of its origin, development, and structure will …
