An Investigation Of The Combined Heat And Mass Transfer Processes In The Drying Of Hygroscopic Porous Media With Two Disparate Length Scales, Thomas Joseph Phillips Dec 1989

An Investigation Of The Combined Heat And Mass Transfer Processes In The Drying Of Hygroscopic Porous Media With Two Disparate Length Scales, Thomas Joseph Phillips

Doctoral Dissertations

A mathematical model describing the drying process in a hygroscopic porous medium with two disparate length scales is formulated. The mathematical model is used to identify the important dimensionless parameters appearing in the problem; and, a parametric study is performed to determine the effects of varying these parameters on the drying process. Of particular interest in this study is to apply the model to the drying of large, round hay bales. Therefore a discussion of how the results of the parametric study impact on the efficient use of a hay drier is also presented.

The results from the parametric study …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna Dec 1989

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna

Doctoral Dissertations

The field of creative or expressive arts therapies seeks to harness the power for'creative expression to the process of psychotherapy. Although expressive arts therapies are increasingly being used with a variety of populations, including the elderly, the disabled, intergenerational, and cross-cultural groups, a comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies has yet to emerge. In addition, there is a paucity of research of what works in such therapies. A comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies, however, can only emerge from the expressive arts themselves, reflecting the uniqueness of the creative process that is at their foundation. Qualitative research focusing on the …

Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam Dec 1989

Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam

Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of acidic precipitation on the soil solution chemistry and bioavailability of AI, Mn, and Cu in soils from spruce-fir and oak-hickory forests were examined in laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies.

Soil solution concentrations of labile (inorganic) monomeric AI (LMAI) increased with decreasing solution pH and with increasing exchangeable AI and decreasing exchangeable Ca/AI of the soils. Dissolved organic matter decreased with decreasing solution pH and influenced decreases in nonlabile (organic) monomeric AI (NLMAI).

Simulated acidic precipitation increased LMAI concentrations in the laboratory equilibration and greenhouse studies, but not in the field plot studies in oak-hickory and spruce-fir forests. …

Relationship Of Free Fatty Acids And Acid Degree Values To Lipolytic Flavor Of Milk, Susan E. Duncan Dec 1989

Relationship Of Free Fatty Acids And Acid Degree Values To Lipolytic Flavor Of Milk, Susan E. Duncan

Doctoral Dissertations

Free fatty acids were studied in relation to acid degree value (ADV) and rancid flavor (RF) in milk and ADV evaluated as a method for measurement of RF. Selected fatty acids (FA) were blended in milk at .25µmol/ml milk with emulsifier. Recovery of FA was <.63 (C4-C8), 1.95-2.33 (C10-C16), 3.24 (C18:0)» and 4.12µmol/g fat (C18:1). Significant differences (p<.05) in recovery were found among all groups of FA. Recovery of 5 concentrations (.20, .25, .35, .45, .55 µmol/ml milk) did not differ (p>.05) for C4 (<.51 µmol/g fat), was proportional to added concentration of Cio with significant differences between low and high concentrations (1.94-4.64 µmol/g fat), and was significantly higher with increasing concentration of C18:1 (3.91-11.08 µmol/g fat). Fatty acid partitioning into skim (C4) or fat (C10/ C18:1), as separated by ADV procedure, was demonstrated …

Incorporating Subsistence Into Hedonic Price And Nutrient Demand Models, Cristanna M. Cook Dec 1989

Incorporating Subsistence Into Hedonic Price And Nutrient Demand Models, Cristanna M. Cook

Doctoral Dissertations

Economic theory concludes that utility from the consumption of goods increases at a decreasing rate. This condition also applies to the characteristics model of consumer choice. However, most applications for food use hedonic price equations and nutrient demand equations that do not account for declining marginal utility. Another problem is that nutrient valuation studies have not considered the level of nutrient adequacy or status. In addition, nutrient consumption models have not accounted for the nutritional status of the consumer when trying to identify the variables that influence nutrient consumption.

Data from the 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey were used to …

Ethical Analysis Of Trust In Therapeutic Relationships, Michele A. Carter Dec 1989

Ethical Analysis Of Trust In Therapeutic Relationships, Michele A. Carter

Doctoral Dissertations

The problem of this philosophical study was to analyze the concept of trust for its nature, scope, and value, and to apply this analysis to an investigation of trust claims in therapeutic relationships between patients and practitioners. The analysis included semantic, literary, sociological, epistemological, and moral considerations. Classical philosophical texts were examined in order to determine the importance of trust as an instrumental value and as a requirement for morally desirable societies. Contemporary sociological theories regarding the function of trust were examined, as was the relationship of trust to the norm of truthfulness. Contemporary philosophical arguments which claim that trust …

Coparental Conflict, Competition, And Cooperation And Parents' Perceptions Of Their Children's Social-Emotional Well-Being Following Marital Separation, Belinda Belinda Trotter Dec 1989

Coparental Conflict, Competition, And Cooperation And Parents' Perceptions Of Their Children's Social-Emotional Well-Being Following Marital Separation, Belinda Belinda Trotter

Doctoral Dissertations

The first purpose of this study was to test a conceptual model that postulated that coparental conflict (disagreements between divorcing spouses over child-rearing issues), competition (triangulation of their children in coparental conflicts), and cooperation (supportive behaviors) are three interrelated but distinct dimensions of the quality of the former spouse relationship (QFSR). The second purpose was to examine the relative, unique direct effects of the three coparental variables on parents' perceptions of their children's social-emotional wellbeing (CSEWB) following marital separation. It was hypothesized that CSEWB is affected negatively by coparental competition and, to a lesser degree, positively by coparental cooperation, but …

A Reanalysis Of The Osteological And Cultural Remains From Ausmus Burial Cave, Claiborne County, Tennessee (3ce20), Carole Elizabeth Tucker Dec 1989

A Reanalysis Of The Osteological And Cultural Remains From Ausmus Burial Cave, Claiborne County, Tennessee (3ce20), Carole Elizabeth Tucker

Masters Theses

Few excavations or analyses of remains from burial caves have been published. Those that are reported are frequently cited without considering context of the original excavations and analyses. This consideration is important, because previously collected data would be interpreted differently using modern approaches.

This study is a reanalysis of Ausmus Burial Cave (3CE20), Claiborne County, Tennessee. The site was excavated in the 1930's, and the authors' methodology, conclusion, and conjectures reflect this time. Their hypothesis was that the skeletons represented intruders in the area, they were killed in battle, and their bodies were dropped unceremoniously in the pit cave.

This …

"What Injures Royalty" Surnames, Inbreeding, And Genetic Structure In Sevier County, Tennessee: 1856-1905, Joseph C. Lewelling

Masters Theses

Inbreeding in Southern Appalachia has been a topic of discourse for both local color writers and academicians since the late 19th century, but only a few researchers have aspired to measure inbreeding or describe the genetic structure of Appalachian populations. This study attempts to assess the genetic structure in one small section of Appalachia--Sevier County, Tennessee.

Because surnames, like alleles, are inherited from a parent, their distribution on a population can give clues about the genetic structure of that population--including the degree of inbreeding. Census and marriage records from 1856-1905 were examined using several methods of surname analysis, and estimates …

Masters Theses

The Watts Bar Reservoir study area is an artificially defined region of 13,815 hectares, demarcated by the resevoir boundary of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Following completion of the Watts Bar Dam in 1942, the reservoir impounded 95 river miles of the main Tennessee River, in addition to portions of the Clinch, Emory and Piney rivers, as well as several smaller tributaries. Since the mid-nineteenth century archaelolgical investigations have been conducted in the region. However, the sporadic nature of these research endeavors has created a somewhat fragmented picture of the regions prehistory.

Following Smith's (1978b) model of the linear bandinog of …

The Efficacy Of Phenolic Compounds And Lactoferrin Against Listeria Monocytogenes In A Model Milk System, Kimberli Dale Payne

Masters Theses

Listeria monocytogenes has been recognized as a human and animal pathogen for over 60 years. Found throughout the environment, this gram-positive bacilli has been isolated from a wide variety of materials, such as soil, water, vegetation, and also sewage (Botzler et al., 1974; Watkins and Sleath, 1981). Even though listeriosis only affects a small portion of the population, the illness still has a high mortality rate, especially among newborns, elderly, and those persons who are immunosuppressed. Symptoms of listeriosis include septicemia, meningitis, meningo-encephalitis, endocarditis, an infectious mononucleosis-like syndrome, and abortions (Gray and Killinger, 1966).

The first confirmed food-borne listeriosis outbreak …

Design And Testing Of Devices To Prevent Horizontal Tail Stall Of The Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft, Mark A. Mcbride Dec 1989

Design And Testing Of Devices To Prevent Horizontal Tail Stall Of The Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft, Mark A. Mcbride

Masters Theses

Since its inception, the Ball-Bartoe Jetwing Research Aircraft has been plagued with the problems of horizontal tail stall and static longitudinal instability. The tail stall problem is primarily due to the large downwash at the tail due to the Jetwing's Upper Surface Blowing concept of propulsive lift, and due to the thin, symmetric NACA 0008 airfoil section used for the aircraft 's horizontal tail. These characteristics also contribute to the instability of the Jetwing, as do the aircraft's center of gravity and low tail volume coefficient.

Several possible aircraft modifications were examined to determine if they alleviated the tail stall …

Effects Of Prescription Drug Warning Messages On Perceived Risk : An Elaboration Likelihood Approach, Stephen E. Everett Dec 1989

Effects Of Prescription Drug Warning Messages On Perceived Risk : An Elaboration Likelihood Approach, Stephen E. Everett

Doctoral Dissertations

Responding to relaxed regulation, pharmaceutical manufacturers recently have instituted direct-to-consumer (DTC) prescription drug-advertising, bypassing the physician. The resulting debate over the propriety of such DTC advertising has centered, in part, on the effects of DTC advertising upon untrained consumers, particularly the effectiveness with which those ads convey risk information to readers/viewers. This study examined relations among several important risk communication variables, within the framework of the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion. How are the complexity of risk information in an advertisement and the reader's prior product ·knowledge related to important "central" responses such as product-relevant thought, perceived risk and attitude …

Air Stripping Of Volatile Organic Compounds From Groundwater: An Evaluation Of A Centrifugal Vapor-Liquid Contactor, Surinder Paul Singh Aug 1989

Air Stripping Of Volatile Organic Compounds From Groundwater: An Evaluation Of A Centrifugal Vapor-Liquid Contactor, Surinder Paul Singh

Doctoral Dissertations

The performance of a centrifugal vapor-liquid contactor equipped with high specific surface area packing (>2000 m2/m3) was evaluated for air stripping of jet fuel components from groundwater. Hydraulic test data indicated that the Sherwood flooding correlation which has been proposed for use in designing centrifugal vapor-liquid contactors overestimates the rotational speeds at which flooding occurs. For the mass transfer of performance, a concept of area of a transfer unit (ATU) was introduced to account for the change in fluid loading with radius of the packing torus. The ATU was found to be a strong function …

An Examination Of Subsistence, Settlement, And Chronology During The Early Woodland Kellogg Phase In The Piedmont Physiographic Province Of The Southeastern United States, William Rowe Bowen

Doctoral Dissertations

The Early Woodland Kellogg Phase of north-central Georgia is known primarily from survey and excavation data collected during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Knowledge and synthesis of the Kellogg Phase was restricted to site specific and cultural historical analysis. Data analysis and interpretation were based on method and theory in vogue at that time. More recent investigations indicate that Kellogg was a much more dynamic and diverse cultural manifestation than originally interpreted.

The purpose of this study is to define subsistence and settlement patterning and refine chronological placement of the Kellogg Phase by reevaluating earlier data in light of contemporary …
