1. To develop a series of vegetational classification systems based on the floristics of community strata, overstory structural functional features, and environmental parameter of a region typical of the temperate Tennessee Valley;

2. To examine the suitability of these classification systems for the complex forests of the Tennessee Valley;

3. To develop numerical tools for evaluating classification suitability;

4. To use these tools to seek out natural discontinuities in vegetational patterns.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a mathematical model using linear stepwise regression analysis that would predict the dietary iron intake of pregnant women. Development of the mathematical model was based upon sociological, psychological and physiological factors assumed to be related to the dietary iron intake of pregnant women.

Fifty-seven pregnant women participated in the study. They were private outpatients of two obstetricians at the Macomb Clinic, Macomb, Illinois.

Energy utilization characteristics for commercial food service equipment were determined to provide data to establish the cost of energy in the preparation of food products. Twenty pounds of frozen pre-cooked breaded chicken quarters were cooked to an end point temperature of 180°F using a deep fryer, a braiser, a two-pan bake oven, and a convection oven.

Kilowatt-hour readings were made to measure energy consumption of each piece of equipment. An alternate technique was developed to estimate energy consumption of each piece of equipment by using energy ratings in combination with measuring the on-time of the thermostat signal light. The energy …

Food and nutrition misconceptions, food and nutrition-related interests, and information sources of 185, tenth through twelfth grade students from a selected sample of Knoxville, Tennessee, high schools were studied. Relevant information was obtained through the development and administration of a questionnaire designed to distinguish between level of food and nutrition knowledge and degree of subscription to misconceptions, to determine which topics within the realm of food and nutrition were of interest to the teenage population, and to ascertain sources of information for the various categories of food and nutrition knowledge.

Three species of double-strand (ds) RNA, designated RF I, RF II, and RF III in order of decreasing size, were produced by RNase treatment of extracts of chicken embryo cells infected for 6 h with Sindbis virus. These species were identifiable with those reported by Simmons and Strauss (28). At a low level of enzyme (0.001 µg/ml) the major species obtained was RF I. When the enzyme concentration was increased 10-, 100, and 1000-fold, there was a progressive increase in the proportions of RF's II and III and a concurrent decrease in the proportion of RF I. A biosystematic study was conducted on Clematis subsection Viornae. Morphological, cytological, biochemical, ecological and distributional data were collected from herbarium, field and laboratory investigations. Three ordinations (Principle Components Analysis, Principle Coordinates Analysis and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling Analysis) and a cladistic analysis (following procedures outlined by Nelson and Van Horn) were used to order taxa into phenetic and phylogenetic classifications. From these studies eight taxa are recognized: f. addisonii, f· glaucophylla, f· pitcheri var. pitcheri, f. pitcheri var. dictyota, C. reticulata, C. texensis, f· versicolor and C. viorna. In-furrow and foliar insecticides are the two most common treatments used to control injurious levels of thrips on seedling cotton. Six in-furrow insecticidal treatments and seven foliar insecticidal treatments were applied at four different locations in the spring of 1976 in the West Tennessee area. These treat-ments were evaluated in regard to thrips control on seedling cotton and also their effect upon plant populations, plant heights, and plant vigor. This paper is the product of a study of the ichthyofaunal distribution within the Little Tennessee River. This system is a major tributary to the Tennessee River.

A total of 212 collections are included in this paper. Of this total, 67 were made by the author. The remainder of the collections were made by various agencies and individuals. Of the total number of collections made by the author, approximately half were done using diving gear and employing sight identification. The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the perform-ance of two extreme types of Angus steers grown and finished on two common Tennessee systems. Forty animals were put on pasture; half Good-grade and half X-grade; twenty animals were put into the drylot; half Good-grade and half X-grade. One system included a winter pasture phase, a spring-summer pasture phase, and a finish-ing phase. The other system consisted of a drylot silage phase and a finishing phase. Controlling johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L). Pers.] in such agronomic crops as corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] presents a major problem to many farmers. Although several preemergence herbicides have been developed to control seedling johnsongrass, in general rhizome johnsongrass is primarily responsive only to foliar-applied chemicals. One such postemergence chemical which gives excellent control of rhizome johnsongrass is glyphosate (N-phosphonomethyl glycine). The mechanism of Al tolerance in plants was investigated in a series of greenhouse experiments which compared two varieties of snapbeans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) that were differentially tolerant to Al. The more tolerant 'Dade' variety was compared to 'Romano' with respect to growth, mineral nutrition, pH, total acidity, Al fixation by root macerates, organic acid content, morphological effects of Al, and to location of Al and P in roots. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of added soybean flour on some attributes of the rehydrated mass prepared from the mixture of soybean and yam flours. Fortifying fufu (or iyan), a food made from yam tubers, is a potential means of improving the nutritional level of certain African people. The yam flour prepared by freeze drying had 1.25% protein; the commercial soybean flour, 53.15%. Samples prepared from a yam-soybean flour mixture were softer and more tacky when compared to samples prepared from yam flour. A mass selected com population (MS 13), and the parent variety Jellicorse (Je) were evaluated at Knoxville and Crossville using random S₁ lines per se and S₀ lines topcrossed to an unrelated single cross. The selected population (MS 13) had undergone thirteen generations of mass selection for ear com yield. S₁ lines and their testcrosses of MS 13 did not demonstrate statistically significant average yielding superiority over lines of Je at either Knoxville or Crossville, or the two locations combined. The purposes of this study were to acylate glandless cottonseed flour by using succinic anhydride and then to study the functionality and performance of acylated flour. Glandless cottonseed flour was acylated by adding one-tenth gram of succinic anhydride per gram flour. The anhydride was added to the flour suspension over a period of 60 minutes with constant stirring at room temperature (23-24°C.). The pH of the reaction was maintained at pH 8 (±0.5) by addition of 50 percent NaOH. After the reaction was finished, the pH of the flour suspension was lowered to pH 4 (±0.5). This study was conducted on the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park west of U.S. 441. The region is mountainous, with diverse habitats and considerable variation in temperature and precipitation. The major objectives were to describe bear movements and activities using radioisotopes and radiotelemetry, to determine diel activity patterns, and to evaluate selected radioisotopes as possible feces tags.

In September of 1974, two penned bears were injected with ⁶⁰Co or ¹³⁴Cs. Results of an earlier study using ¹⁰⁹Cd and ¹⁴⁴Ce were evaluated. All isotopes appear unsatisfactory as suitable feces tags.

The purpose of this study was to systematically classify perforated bone tubes known as flutes or whistles which had been recovered from archaeological sites in eastern North America. A sample was established from specimens described in the literature and additional specimens examined by the author. Sizeable collections in the Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, New York, and the Ohio State Museum in Columbus, Ohio, were measured and photographed by the author. The little Pigeon River in Sevier County, Tennessee presents a near ideal situation for the study of the effects of domestic sewage on species composition in a mountain river. The little Pigeon system has two principal components, the West and Middle Prongs. The West Prong is polluted by municipal effluent from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, while the Middle Prong remains relatively pristine. Physicgraphically, the two prongs are strikingly similar. The purpose of this research was to survey hotel and motel accommodation preferences of families with children under three years. A survey of families traveling with young children in 36 randomly selected hotels and motels in four Tennessee cities was taken over a one month period.

Data were obtained through the use of a questionnaire which was designed to show family income levels of $7,001-$15,000 and $15,001 and above as well as age differences of children under three. The age range of the children included one month to 36 months.
