Household, Psychosocial, And Individual-Level Factors Associated With Fruit, Vegetable, And Fiber Intake Among Low-Income Urban African American Youth, Angela Trude, Anna Kharmats, Kristen Hurley, Elizabeth Steeves, Sameera Talegawkar, Joel Gittelsohn

Nutrition Publications and Other Works

Background: Childhood obesity, one of the greatest challenges to public health, disproportionately affects low-incomeurban minority populations. Fruits and vegetables (FV) are nutrient dense foods that may be inversely associated with excessive weight gain. We aimed to identify the individual characteristic, psychosocial, and household factors influencing FV and fiber consumption in low-income African-American (AA) youth in Baltimore, MD. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data collected from 285 low-income AA caregiver-youth (age range: 10–14 y) dyads participating in the baseline evaluation of the B’More Healthy Communities for Kids obesity prevention trial. The Kid's Block FFQ was used to estimate daily intakes …

Convergence To Consensus In Heterogeneous Groups And The Emergence Of Informal Leadership, Sergey Gavrilets, Jeremy David Auerbach, Mark Van Vugt Jul 2016

Convergence To Consensus In Heterogeneous Groups And The Emergence Of Informal Leadership, Sergey Gavrilets, Jeremy David Auerbach, Mark Van Vugt

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

When group cohesion is essential, groups must have efficient strategies in place for consensus decisionmaking. Recent theoretical work suggests that shared decision-making is often the most efficient way for dealing with both information uncertainty and individual variation in preferences. However, some animal and most human groups make collective decisions through particular individuals, leaders, that have a disproportionate influence on group decision-making. To address this discrepancy between theory and data, we study a simple, but general, model that explicitly focuses on the dynamics of consensus building in groups composed by individuals who are heterogeneous in preferences, certain personality traits (agreeability and …

Knee Joint Loads And Surrounding Muscle Forces During Stair Ascent In Patients With Total Knee Replacement, Robert Rasnick, Tyler Standifird, Jeffrey A. Reinbolt, Harold E. Cates, Songning Zhang Jun 2016

Knee Joint Loads And Surrounding Muscle Forces During Stair Ascent In Patients With Total Knee Replacement, Robert Rasnick, Tyler Standifird, Jeffrey A. Reinbolt, Harold E. Cates, Songning Zhang

Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies Publications and Other Works

Total knee replacement (TKR) is commonly used to correct end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, difficulty with stair climbing often persists and prolongs the challenges of TKR patents. Complete understanding of loading at the knee is of great interest in order to aid patient populations, implant manufacturers, rehabilitation, and future healthcare research. Musculoskeletal modeling and simulation approximates joint loading and corresponding muscle forces during a movement. The purpose of this study was to determine if knee joint loadings following TKR are recovered to the level of healthy individuals, and determine the differences in muscle forces causing those loadings. Data from five healthy …

The Civic Education Crisis And Its Effect On Young Voters, Caroline Duer May 2016

The Civic Education Crisis And Its Effect On Young Voters, Caroline Duer

Baker Scholar Projects

The civic education crisis is the most underrated crisis in the American education system. The voter turnout rates in America are very low and education policies are heavily focused on STEM. In my report I analyze the link between the quality of state education and youth voter turnout as well as the link between civics exams scores and youth voter turnout. As the civic education crisis grows, and national support for civics ebbs and flows, citizens, especially young people, are going to be the victims. When civic knowledge decreases, it is impossible for our government to function properly. Without the …

Who Uses ‘Them’?: Gender-Neutral Pronoun Usage Among Queer And Non-Queer College Students, Brandon Darr May 2016

Who Uses ‘Them’?: Gender-Neutral Pronoun Usage Among Queer And Non-Queer College Students, Brandon Darr

Baker Scholar Projects

In this project on language ideology, I designed a sociolinguistic study to investigate the relationship between language perception (what one thinks they know about language usage) and language production (how one actually uses language) via writing and speaking tasks designed to assess general pronoun usage given specific referents in both formal and informal contexts. The qualitative responses are categorized and descriptively analyzed across queer status based off participants’ background information.

Participants included 61 college students who were native English speakers and between the ages of 18 and 26. Based off a question collected on the background information sheet, 18 participants …

The 2015 World Expo Exposed: The Depiction Of Global Food Security, Sara A. Stein

Baker Scholar Projects

The World Expo Milano 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” was the first World Expo to be themed around food. The central theme of the Expo questioned how the world can feed everyone in a sustainable manner. This research project was a case study of the World Expo that examined the central themes that different entities expressed as solutions to creating food security. The pavilions of different entities, such as countries, groups of countries, civil society organizations, corporations, and international organizations, were evaluated through participant observation. Pavilion Zero, the pavilion sponsored by the Expo that was designed to represent …

Associations Between Non-Discrimination And Training Policies And Physicians’ Attitudes And Knowledge About Sexual And Gender Minority Patients: A Comparison Of Physicians From Two Hospitals, Jennifer M. Jabson, Jason W. Mitchell, Benjamin Doty Mar 2016

Associations Between Non-Discrimination And Training Policies And Physicians’ Attitudes And Knowledge About Sexual And Gender Minority Patients: A Comparison Of Physicians From Two Hospitals, Jennifer M. Jabson, Jason W. Mitchell, Benjamin Doty

Public Health Publications and Other Works

Background: Some physicians lack knowledge and awareness about health issues specific to sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals. To help improve this, hospitals have implemented policies that mandate non-discrimination and training to promote sexual and gender minority health. There is limited evidence about how such policies relate to physicians’ knowledge, attitudes, and gender and sexual minority affirmative practices. Method: A random sample of 1000 physicians was recruited from a complete list of physicians affiliated with one of two university Hospitals located in Tennessee and 180 physicians completed the survey concerning attitudes and knowledge about SGM individuals. Physicians were affiliated with …

Inequalities Creating Economic Barriers To Owning Mobile Phones In India: Factors Responsible For The Gender Digital Divide, Devendra Potnis Jan 2016

Inequalities Creating Economic Barriers To Owning Mobile Phones In India: Factors Responsible For The Gender Digital Divide, Devendra Potnis

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

In India, men own around 70% of mobile phones, creating a gender digital divide for the most widely owned information and communication technology (ICT) in the world. This study investigates the factors responsible for the inability of 245 female slum-dwellers in India earning less than $2 a day to own a mobile phone. Open, axial and selective coding of survey responses shows that socio-cultural, economic, demographic, psychological, communication-related, and health related inequalities in the lives of the respondents create eight economic barriers precluding respondents from owning some of the least expensive mobile phones worth $15 or so on installments of …

Examining Student Writing Proficiencies Across Genres: Results Of An Intervention Study, Hannah M. Dostal, Kimberly A. Wolbers

Theory and Practice in Teacher Education Publications and Other Works

This study examines the patterns of growth across both taught and untaught genres of writing for deaf and hard of hearing students in grades 4-6. 23 students were exposed to Strategic and Interactive Writing Instruction (SIWI) for five weeks, during which time they received guided, interactive instruction focused on how writers address particular purposes and audiences with their writing. By examining student writing samples before and after both regular writing instruction and SIWI using genre-specific rubrics, we investigated whether students transfer and generalize writing strategies and processes learned in one genre to writing in a genre for which they did …

Distinctive 16 Pf Personality Traits Of Librarians, Jeanine M Williamson, John W. Lounsbury Jan 2016

Distinctive 16 Pf Personality Traits Of Librarians, Jeanine M Williamson, John W. Lounsbury

UT Libraries Faculty: Peer-Reviewed Publications

While there is a fairly extensive literature on core competencies of librarians, there is a paucity of research on personality traits that distinguish them from those in other occupations. The present study compared the personality traits of 88 librarians with a general norm group using the 16 PF, a widely researched normal-personality inventory. We found that librarians are more apprehensive, cautious, flexible, focused, imaginative, open-minded, respectful, self-reliant, serious, tender-minded, and trusting as well as higher on general reasoning skills than those in the norm group. Findings are discussed in terms of consistency with core competences of librarians. Practical implications were …
