The Desegregation Of Clinton High School : Then And Now, Valerie Marie Hulett Herd

This study examines the turmoil and violence surrounding the 1956 desegregation of Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee and the subsequent bombing of the school in 1958. I draw from sociological theories in political economy, status politics, and social movements. By examining historic events occurring in the U.S. as well as Clinton, Tennessee prior to 1956, the impact of social and economic conditions is established thus explaining the social movements and countermovements that arose. Effacing The Blots From Their Otherwise Fair Escutcheon : Problems Of Public Health In Leicester 1849-1891, Scott Edward Roney

This study concerns two public health problems in Victorian Leicester: sewerage and 'summer diarrhoea.' The problems are considered to have been constructed socially as well as materially. While neither problem was unique to Leicester, there were circumstances which made the town's responses to the problems unique. The methodological lens for the study is a quasi-Kuhnian conceptualization called an 'accepted remedy.’ It is posited that the existence or absence of a consensually-held accepted remedy for a specific public health problem was a significant factor in determining how a community would respond to the problem and how successful such a response might …

The Journalism Of Patrick F. Mcmanus : His Niche In Outdoor Humor, Tim Miller Strickland

The role of Patrick F. McManus in the genre of outdoor journalism is examined. Methods and procedures included a biographical study; a personal interview with the subject; an analysis of the critical reception to his work; and an analysis of his literary style. The findings include: that McManus' childhood lifestyle prepared him for his success as a writer; that while McManus is opinionated, he works diligently to avoid controversial topics, including those about which he has strong opinions; that McManus has enjoyed a largely positive reception from book critics; and that McManus now stands alone in his position in a …
