A Performance Of Disease And Its Cures: Lovesickness In Medieval Iberia, Lillian B. Sanders
A Performance Of Disease And Its Cures: Lovesickness In Medieval Iberia, Lillian B. Sanders
Masters Theses
In the context of late medieval Iberia, lovesickness as a real disease was both treatable and threatening to one’s lived experience. Different forms of lovesick cures, from both learned and vernacular healers, arose from the Galenic regime of the humoral body. Cures such as charms, mixtures, and verbal expressions helped heal lovesick patients, as is shown in the archive through sources like remedy books and literary texts depicting lovesick affliction. Much of the current scholarship on lovesickness focuses on medieval medicine through the archive. Through the lens of performance studies, I argue that medieval Iberians enacted cures on lovesick patients …
Untangling Motivation And Performance: Examining The Impact Of Feedback, Expectancy, And Resilience On Performance, Erica W. Jenkins
Untangling Motivation And Performance: Examining The Impact Of Feedback, Expectancy, And Resilience On Performance, Erica W. Jenkins
Masters Theses
This study explored the relationship between motivation and performance by examining factors, such as feedback and individual differences, posited to influence motivation and performance. The most damaging form of performance feedback, destructive critical, was contrasted with constructive critical feedback to determine its impact on motivation. Expectancy theory, a mainstay theory in research on motivation, served as the theoretical framework to study motivation. An individual difference variable, resilience, was examined in relation to performance. These relationships were explored through the lens of both actual and perceived performance. An online quasi-experiment was conducted to examine these relationships, in which participants were asked …
Automated Program Profiling And Analysis For Managing Heterogeneous Memory Systems, Adam Palmer Howard
Automated Program Profiling And Analysis For Managing Heterogeneous Memory Systems, Adam Palmer Howard
Masters Theses
Many promising memory technologies, such as non-volatile, storage-class memories and high-bandwidth, on-chip RAMs, are beginning to emerge. Since each of these new technologies present tradeoffs distinct from conventional DRAMs, next-generation systems are likely to include multiple tiers of memory storage, each with their own type of devices. To efficiently utilize the available hardware, such systems will need to alter their data management strategies to consider the performance and capabilities provided by each tier.
This work explores a variety of cross-layer strategies for managing application data in heterogeneous memory systems. We propose different program profiling-based techniques to automatically partition program allocation …

Masters Theses
Monitoring systems are paramount to the proactive detection and mitigation of problems in computer networks related to performance and security. Degraded performance and compromised end-nodes can cost computer networks downtime, data loss and reputation. InSight2 is a platform that models, analyzes and visualizes large scale Argus network flow data using up-to-date geographical data, organizational information, and emerging threats. It is engineered to meet the needs of network administrators with flexibility and modularity in mind. Scalability is ensured by devising multi-core processing by implementing robust software architecture. Extendibility is achieved by enabling the end user to enrich flow records using additional …
Shakespeare In South Africa: An Examination Of Two Performances Of Titus Andronicus In Apartheid And Post-Apartheid South Africa, Erin Elizabeth Whitaker
Shakespeare In South Africa: An Examination Of Two Performances Of Titus Andronicus In Apartheid And Post-Apartheid South Africa, Erin Elizabeth Whitaker
Masters Theses
The works of William Shakespeare are wide and universal. His work has been and is still consistently performed in numerous countries and venues across the globe. This thesis focuses on two performances of Titus Andronicus, one of Shakespeare’s most controversial plays, in South Africa. One performance, directed by Dieter Reible in 1970, was produced during apartheid. The second, directed by Gregory Doran, was performed in 1995, just after the end of apartheid. These performances of Titus not only show the versatility and universality of Shakespeare’s work, but the complexity of audience reception and directorial intention in different political landscapes. …
Equal Standing, Benjamin Thomas Dance
Equal Standing, Benjamin Thomas Dance
Masters Theses
My goal in this thesis is to challenge the social issues that can arise from current downtown redevelopment plans throughout the United States. This proposal seeks to break down physical, spatial, and social barriers that can result from commercial development by creating a design intervention that is economically beneficial for the city while remaining inclusive to the community as a whole. This particular thesis will focus on the current downtown development in Muskegon, Michigan.
The challenge is to create a design and program that is as central to the community as industry once was. This will come in the form …
Music Performance Anxiety And Dispositional Flow In Predicting Audition Success In Amateur Percussionists, Benjamin Hyun Stocking
Music Performance Anxiety And Dispositional Flow In Predicting Audition Success In Amateur Percussionists, Benjamin Hyun Stocking
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine personal characteristics of adolescent/young adult percussionists who were successful in their audition for a highly competitive, performing arts unit (i.e. a World-Class junior drum & bugle corps). We were particularly interested in investigating the predictive influence of daily practice time and two psychological variables related to optimal performance (i.e., dispositional flow and musical performance anxiety-MPA).
“Can The Circle Be Unbroken” : An Ensemble Of Memory And Performance In Selected Novels Of Lee Smith, Jessica Frances Hoover
“Can The Circle Be Unbroken” : An Ensemble Of Memory And Performance In Selected Novels Of Lee Smith, Jessica Frances Hoover
Masters Theses
This project combines performance studies and memory studies to the analysis of three of Lee Smith’s southern Appalachian novels in order to open the texts to broader understandings of Smith’s use of oral performance forms, such as ballads, music, and storytelling, in her characters’ transmissions of tradition. The approach draws on performance work by Joseph Roach and collective memory theory by Maurice Halbwachs to create a lens through which to add to existing Smith scholarship centering on feminist readings and women’s authorship. This blended approach allows room to analyze the oral performance forms so central to Smith’s work and their …
Effects Of Supercooled Water Ingestion On Engine Performance, Rick Hutchings
Effects Of Supercooled Water Ingestion On Engine Performance, Rick Hutchings
Masters Theses
An aircraft will encounter freezing rain, snow, and ice during ground operation and flight. In cold conditions, ice may form on th einlet and internal stators and rotors of the gas turbine engine. When ice accumulates on blades (and/or stators), the aerodynamic characteristics of the blades change due to the altered size, shape, and roughness. This change causes the blade to no longer operate at its design point and decreases compressor performance. Therefore, characterization of the aerodynamic performance is required to define the associated losses due to the effects of supercooled liquid water ingestion. This characterization can be accomplished through …
Competitive Interactions Between Appalachian Hardwoods And Different Groundcovers On Reclaimed Mine Sites, Adam David Klobucar
Competitive Interactions Between Appalachian Hardwoods And Different Groundcovers On Reclaimed Mine Sites, Adam David Klobucar
Masters Theses
Coal mining is a significant industry in Appalachia. Herbaceous groundcovers are commonly planted to reduce soil erosion and protect water quality during mine reclamation, but many groundcovers may be too competitive to be compatible with trees. The objectives of this research were to investigate the performance of trees planted within different groundcovers and to measure how different groundcovers influence resource availability, specifically soil moisture and light
Two studies were performed; one in a greenhouse and the other on 3 mine sites in east Tennessee where seedlings were planted and grown in competition with different groundcovers. Growth, biomass, leaf area, and …
