Current methods suffer from incapability of accurately tracking movements with high degree of freedoms. The objective is to determine the effect of reducing nitrogen input through feeding low rumen degradable protein (RDP) and rumen undegradable protein (RUP) proportions on milk production, nitrogen efficiency and metabolism in heat-stressed cows. Forty-eight mid-lactating, Holstein cows were assigned to treatments using a randomized block design in a 2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments (n = 12/treatment). Treatments included two levels of RDP (10 and 8%) and two levels of RUP (8 and 6%). Research has established that mindfulness may be useful to individual and dyadic wellbeing among both early-stage and long-term relationships. Nonetheless, it remains unclear which mechanisms of mindfulness are most relevant to relationship satisfaction among long-term married couples. Furthermore, although previous research suggests that an individual’s total mindfulness is not related to his or her partner’s relationship satisfaction, we have yet to determine whether any specific facets of mindfulness may evidence a significant cross-partner association with relationship satisfaction. The objective of this effort was to design and validate a Mach 3 wind tunnel nozzle contour. The nozzle will be used for an existing facility, replacing a Mach 2.3 nozzle. The nozzle contour was design using the widely-distributed CONTUR code developed by Sivells. The program uses a combination of analytical solutions and the method of characteristics in order to calculate a nozzle contour. A nozzle contour adhering to the existing geometry requirements was achieved through an iterative process. The flowfield of the finalized nozzle contour was solved using ANSYS fluent. The solution results were analyzed for flow uniformity.

A prototype weight-based yield mapping system for seed corn production was developed at the University of Tennessee (UTK) and field tested in Iowa. The first chapter of the following study focuses on assessing the accuracy of this yield mapping system which employs a novel yield prediction and analysis software called Yield Analyzer. Yield Analyzer was designed using a rule-based system for producing yield maps with minimal user input by automatically determining acceptable ranges for known dependent variables that contribute to dynamic weight measurement errors.

The science of identification by bite mark analysis has recently been called into serious question. (Reesu and Brown 2016) Human dentition is truly variable, but often not unique. When animal bites are considered, a proper ID of the perpetrator is nearly impossible. Primary distortion (when the bite is made) and secondary distortion (during decomposition or healing) both further disrupt landmarks that might be used for identification. The work of two of the South’s preeminent artists — one an author, the other a photographer — converge to form the thesis of this project. The internationally recognized photographer William Eggleston (b. 1939) was born and resides in Memphis, Tennessee, which is at times the subject of his art. Eudora Welty (1909- 2001), of nearby Jackson, Mississippi, is one of the great 20thcentury authors that the South produced; she stands among the southern pantheon alongside Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, and Flannery O’Connor. Crop tree enhancement is a forest management technique undertaken to maintain, enhance, and improve the species composition, growth rate, and stem quality of stands so that management objectives may be better and more quickly accomplished. In 1996, a crop tree enhancement study involving green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) in a 16-year-old, naturally regenerated, mixed-species, pole-sized, bottomland hardwood stand was initiated at Ames Plantation in West TN. However, this also means the nuclear forensic community has no actual debris from which to develop analytical methods for source attribution, making the development of surrogate nuclear debris a vital undertaking. At the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility (HRIBF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL), we investigated the formation, production and potential application of negative-ion copper clusters using mass distributions of negative-ion copper clusters obtained by bombarding various copper samples with Cs ions. The Cu samples – in very large mass-selected clusters Cu (e.g. n=54) – included natural Cu, isotopically enriched copper-63 and copper-65, and electroformed ultra-clean Cu. Mass spectra of negative copper cluster produced by Cs sputter source size up to 50 are shown for the first time.

The DJI S-1000 Spreading Wings octocopter rotor downwash slipstream area of influence was measured in axial climb conditions and in straight level flight. These data were gathered using a simple apparatus of distributed anemometers and a custom made boom affixed to the drone. Straight level flight tests incurred autopilot oscillations that rendered the data gathering and analysis challenging. The best quality data was acquired during the axial climb flight tests. The axial climbs were conducted in calm winds. It was determined that the axial climbs under these conditions displaced the rotor slipstream 9 ± 2.5 cm to the rear of …

The search for and detailed study of new particles and forces with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN is fundamentally dependent on the precise measurement of the rate at which proton-proton collisions produce any particles, the so-called luminosity. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ultrasonic transducers on heat transfer in a packed particle bed heat exchanger. Although substantial research has been devoted to ultrasound, and the associated improvements in heat transfer, data regarding the effects on packed particle beds is non-existent. This is of particular interest given the potential to improve heat transfer in a wide variety of packed particle bed systems. Understanding color polymorphism and associated ecological and morphological divergence is important to improving out knowledge of diversity and speciation; anoles are a model clade for addressing these questions. Anolis conspersus (the Grand Cay- man blue-throated anole) is endemic to a small island and has color variants (green, blue, and brown morphs) that are spatially arranged despite a lack of wider environmental gradients. Objective: Poor family functioning and parenting practices are often linked to poor adjustment outcomes for children and adolescents. We examined the association between relational and contextual family environment variables and adjustment outcomes in an understudied sample of rural Appalachian youth. Also examined was whether extracurricular involvement moderated the relationship between these variables. Method: Participants were 367 adolescents from multiple high schools (grades 9-12) in an Appalachian region of rural East Tennessee. Self-report measures were used to assess internalizing and externalizing problems, family relationships, extracurricular activity, and health risk behaviors; truancy data was collected from academic records. The first experiment was designed to determine the concentration of protected fish oil product (PFO), as GromegaTM, to be added that would sufficiently decrease the polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratio in the sows’ milk and colostrum. Of the 3 diets tested (0.25%, 0.5% and 1%) with a control (0% PFO), only the 1% PFO diet had an effect on the PUFA concentrations. The goal of this research was to compare modern shell material to relic material of the main branch of the Holston River to examine freshwater mussel growth and mortality to discover possible inferences from changes in water quality. Relic shell material collected from two sample sites were dated using low precision C14 dating (a relatively new method) and racemization (used to give an idea of the time between death and discovery). Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), a perennial grass native to North America, is a leading biomass feedstock candidate for the manufacture of cellulosic ethanol. Switchgrass is considered a viable option for biofuel production due to its cheap production cost and ability to grow on marginal land. Biofuel derived from switchgrass has been shown to be very energy efficient, producing 540% more renewable energy versus nonrenewable energy expended. Switchgrass-derived biofuel is also estimated to have greenhouse gas emissions that are 94% lower than emissions from gasoline (Schmer et al 2008). This project focuses on the comparison of inexpensive mesophyll protoplast isolation via the use of food-grade enzymes and transformation between diploid Panicum hallii Vasey (PAH) and polyploid cellulosic feedstock Panicum virgatum L (switchgrass), a relative of PAH. PAH has great potential as a C4 model species for crop and bioenergy research. Here an inexpensive switchgrass and PAH mesophyll protoplast isolation and transformation system was developed; the first protoplast system for PAH. This work demonstrates and analyses a new flow candidate for describing the internal gaseous motion in simulated rocket motors. The fundamental features of this solution include the conservation of key system properties also incorporated in the classic Taylor-Culick (TC) system (i.e. inviscid, axisymmetric, steady and rotational properties), while allowing for the development of a swirling velocity component. A recent neural-process approach using dynamic field theory (DFT), put forth by Buss and Spencer (2014), demonstrated how a simple dimensional attention mechanism can explain the behavioral and neural data associated with the development of flexible attention and performance in the Dimensional Change Card Sorting task (DCCS). This included mechanical testing of single lignin carbon fiber (LCF), interfacial shear strength determination for LCF-resin systems using single fiber fragmentation, x-ray diffraction for the evaluation of microstructural parameters, and finally composite manufacturing and testing. Through these focused areas of analysis, the carbon fiber is thoroughly characterized and composite performance is evaluated. The Endangered Species Act (ESA), established in 1973, was a landmark piece of environmental legislation and remains the standard for endangered species conservation. Implementation of the ESA has often been framed as pitting economic development against species conservation, inciting passions for and against endangered species conservation. The strength of opposing public opinions is highlighted by high-profile controversies such as those around the snail darter, northern spotted owl and the greater sage grouse. In an attempt to reduce conflict, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) increasingly seeks to utilize collaborative, stakeholder-based processes that address stakeholder interests, attitudes, and values.
