Roland Blais was born in Rumford, Maine in 1939, and knew by the time he was in high school that he was "different". He saved money and moved to Los Angeles in 1958, where he got a job with Broadway Department Store, and went to gay bars for the first time. He joined the Navy and served from 1959 to 1963, leaving with an honorable discharge. He then enlisted in the Army, serving 1963-1966, stationed at Walsrode, Germany, working with missiles. He returned to the United States, retrieving the car he bought in Germany from Newark Port, New Jersey, …

The Labrecque Collection offers an insight into the world of Lewiston-Auburn's Franco-American community between 1947-1963. The photographs are particularly valuable for assessing middle-class family life and religious traditions, especially with regard to the Catholic Church before the Second Vatican Council. The Victor Labrecque Photographic Collection was acquired by the Franco-American Collection in 2002, after Victor Labrecque's death, through the generosity of his daughter, Pauline Moreau. The collection consists of some 5,000 negatives spanning more than 350 distinct events, of which the majority (approximately 200) are weddings. Reprints of photographs are available upon request.

Madeleine Dinora Giguère (1925-2004), the only child of Dr. Eustache and Dinora (Cailler) Giguere was an internationally recognized sociologist, known locally and regionally as “la marraine” (the godmother) of Franco-Americans. Ms. Giguere had a long and distinguished academic career, specializing in ethnic and women’s issues.

Louis-Philippe Gagné (1922-1964) moved to Lewiston from Québec City in 1922, and became editor of Le Messager, having worked for Le Soleil in Québec since 1917. He gained US Citizenship in 1928, ran as a ward clerk in 1928, was a member of the school committee from 1930-1934 and Mayor of Lewiston 1947-1949. He founded the Snowshoe movement in the United States, and was first president of the Union Américain des Raquetteurs. Adelard Tarcisius Janelle (1889-1984) was born in Greene, Maine. At the age of 7, his family moved to Lewiston. At 16, he became a member of the Association St. Dominique, which had been founded by his father, William Janelle. At 18, he became a member of the Union St. Jean-Baptiste’s Lewiston chapter (Conseil 159), of which he was president from 1913-1916 and a board member from 1907-1946. He was also involved with other Franco organizations. Janelle played an important role in fundraising for the Basilica of SS. Fernand Despins (1896-1960) was the son of Césarine Giguère and Napoléon Despins. He served in WWI, attended St Charles Seminary in Sherbrooke, Québec, Bates College in Lewiston, and the Boston University of Law. He practiced as an attorney, and served as Mayor of Lewiston (1939-40) and a Lewiston Municipal Court Judge (1956-60). He received a Presidential Medal of Honor from the French Government in 1950.

Wilfred Laurendeau (1886-1946) was born in Canada and came to Lewiston in 1904 (aged 18). He worked as a cobbler. He married Eugenie Rosseau (c.1884-1927) and Marie-Laure Desroches (1892-1978). Wilfred and Eugenie had three daughters – Liliane (1908-1996), Thérèse (1918-2008), and Marie-Jeanne (1924-2010). Together, the sisters ran Laurendeau’s market on Lisbon Street, Lewiston (1944-1979). Thérèse worked at Bath Iron Works during World War II. Marie-Jeanne was an organist and music teacher.

Lucienne Bedard (1912-) was the daughter of Alphonse and Adelia Paquette Bedard, one of 14 children. She was a celebrated local pianist and long-serving organist at SS. Peter and Paul Parish in Lewiston. Bedard gave her first performance, aged 9, in 1921.She was a pupil of Miss Blanche Belleau, founder of the Foyer Musical, and of Father Maurice Lebrun.

This oral history project was directed by Dr. Maureen Elgersman Lee, of USM, and Rachel Talbot Ross. The interviews were conducted by local high school students. The Collection includes transcripts, photographs and audiotapes from the two phases of the project, which documented African American life in the Greater Portland and Lewiston-Auburn areas.
