Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz
Race, Religion, And Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment: A Test Of Attribution Theory, Sheila M. Schlaupitz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study attempts to provide a more thorough understanding of public attitudes toward capital punishment. Two theories are tested toward this end, utilizing a random sample taken from the jury pool in Hillsborough County, Florida.
First, An indirect test of reference group theory demonstrates the degree to which faith group, religiosity, and race affect public attitudes toward the death penalty. Surprisingly, there is little, albeit mixed, support for reference group theory as it attempts to explain attitudes toward capital punishment. Using the relationships between religion and capital punishment attitudes that we presumed would emerge from the test of reference …

Fifty-five leaders from the hazards community addressed issues surrounding educational needs."

Journeys To Crime: Assessing The Effects Of A Light Rail Line On Crime In The Neighborhoods, Robin Liggett, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Hiroyuki Iseki
Journal of Public Transportation
The implementation of new transit lines is sometimes dogged by concerns that such lines may increase crime rates in station neighborhoods. Afflue nt communities have often complained that transit lines transport crime to the suburbs. This study focuses on the Green Line transit system in Los Angeles and examines its effects on crime in the adjacent areas. The Green Line light rail system passes through some high-crime, inner-city neighborhoods and terminates at its western end in affluent suburban communities. The study examines neighborhood level and municipality- wide crime trends for five years before and five years after th e inception …

A Case Study Of Identity Theft, Stuart F. H Allison
A Case Study Of Identity Theft, Stuart F. H Allison
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an investigation of identity theft, although not a new crime it has recently attracted public concern. This concern has led to both federal and state governments to establish new laws to provide increased protection. Government agencies and the media have warned the public that an individual's social security number and other personal information are the tools that unscrupulous criminals can use to gain access to an identity. Once your identity is assumed criminals can use that new identity to obtain goods and services freely available in this world of instant credit lines.

Eighty-four medium and large law enforcement agencies reported the amount of training provided on mental-health-related issues and the use of specialized responses for calls involving people with mental illnesses. Departments varied widely in the amount of training provided on mental-health-related topics, with a median of 6.5 hours for basic recruits and 1 hour for in-service training. Approximately one third of the agencies (32%) had some specialized response for dealing with calls involving people with mental illnesses. Twenty-one percent had a special unit or bureau within the department to assist in responding to these calls; 8% had access to a mental …

Managing At-Risk Juvenile Offenders In The Community: Putting Evidence Based Principles Into Practice, Randy Borum
Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications
More than a half-million juveniles are under community supervision as a result of violent or delinquent behavior. Research has shown that treatment can reduce their risk of reoffending. This article reviews and distills the key lessons from hundreds of empirical studies and metaanalyses and applies them to practice. The author argues for conducting systematic and developmentally informed risk assessments, selectively assigning intensive intervention to the highest risk offenders, focusing on criminogenic treatment targets, using proven interventions and treatment strategies, and applying rigor in implementation and follow-up.
