Parents of children diagnosed with severe-profound sensorineural hearing loss are selecting cochlear implants at an increasing rate and when their children are very young. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists are typically involved in habilitation activities following implantation in an effort to increase children's access to listening and spoken language. These clinicians depend upon parents to participate in habilitation activities that may lead to favorable outcomes for children. However, little evidence exists regarding parents' perspectives on the services and supports audiologists and speech-language pathologists provide in this team effort. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal metabolic condition that is screened for via newborn screening. Individuals who are identified as having PKU require a protein-restricted diet to protect against neurological damage. Many parents who learn their child has PKU may already have children who are not affected, or may have children later who are not affected. This creates a unique situation in which parents are rearing children that require a strict protein-restricted diet with children who do not. Parental Involvement During College Preparation: Differences Between First And Non-First Generation College Students, Deronta Renard Spencer

In this thesis I explore differences in parental involvement during college preparation between first and non-first generation college students. I used the theories of social, cultural, and human capital to answer this question. I also look at how first and non-first generation differ among several other variables: parent's education, socioeconomic status, religion affiliation, religious attendance, gender, birth order, family structure, high school academic success, and parent involvement during sibling college preparation. I find that first generation students receive less parental involvement during college preparation than non-first generation college students.
