Building Columbia, Lawrence Lane Dec 2017

Building Columbia, Lawrence Lane

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the research from a project on the builders who helped build Columbia, South Carolina from 1890 to 1940, a dynamic time of growth as the city moved from post-Civil War recovery through industrialization and into modernization.1 Previous research of Columbia’s architectural history often focuses on the few architects with national recognition, like Robert Mills, the architect of the Washington Monument. Frequently omitted from the city’s architectural story are the lesser-known developers, builders, contractors, brick masons, and other tradesmen from inside and outside of Columbia who contributed to the shaping of the city by helping build vernacular architecture …

In 1960 the South Carolina Confederate War Centennial Commission sponsored a reenactment of the 1860 secession convention as the keystone event for state observances of the Civil War Centennial. Local organizations such as the Richland Country Historical Society and WIS Television produced the reenactment, which featured politicians like Strom Thurmond and George Bell Timmerman in leading roles as secession delegates. The pageant had three live showings, and a televised version of the reenactment aired on WIS-TV, which broadcast the program across the state. Following the production’s open-circuit broadcast, the SC Educational Television Center continued broadcasting it in state public schools …

Trends In Gestational Weight Gain In South Carolina, 2004 - 2015, Marilyn Elizabeth Wende Jan 2017

Trends In Gestational Weight Gain In South Carolina, 2004 - 2015, Marilyn Elizabeth Wende

Theses and Dissertations

Objective: Excessive and inadequate gestational weight gain (GWG) are associated with a myriad of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The objective of this study was to examine secular trends in GWG in South Carolina (SC) from 2004 to 2015. We hypothesized that there was a trend of higher GWG z scores (GWGZ) over this 11-year time period after adjusting for changes in population characteristics. We also hypothesize that a trend of higher mean GWGZ at higher percentiles is more apparent for African Americans, rural women, and women who are overweight or obese before pregnancy.

Data and Methods: Data came from SC …

Life After Graduation: Exploring The Utility Of A College And Career Research Project In Defining Students’ Post-High School Goals, Ashley E. Bowers

Theses and Dissertations

In order to assist students with their digital research skills while simultaneously allowing them to research and explore college and career options, a Project-Based Learning (PBL) assignment was incorporated into the secondary English classroom. This served multiple purposes: providing students guidance and support as they determine their future college and career goals, meeting several of the South Carolina 9-12 English/Language Arts standards, and increasing students’ College and Career Readiness. The site for this quantitative action research study was English 3 classes in a large, rural high school in the Charleston, South Carolina area. Creating Equitable Access Pathways For All Students In South Carolina? A Study Of Sc International Baccalaureate Diploma Programs, Diane D. Padula

Theses and Dissertations

This case study adds insight to the idea of equitable access as it relates to advanced coursework available to students in public high schools in South Carolina. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) has become a viable choice since secondary-level magnet programs in SC have taken root for over thirty years. The IBDP originally developed in SC to attract the global elite, however in the recent decade, the IBDP has morphed into a program meant for all students. The concept of IB for All is marketed as a college readiness program within South Carolina IBDP schools. Access is multidimensional; it …

Exploratory Modeling Of Environmental And Anthropogenic Impacts On Mercury In Fish Tissue For Select Watersheds In South Carolina, Julia Mcguire Jan 2017

Exploratory Modeling Of Environmental And Anthropogenic Impacts On Mercury In Fish Tissue For Select Watersheds In South Carolina, Julia Mcguire

Theses and Dissertations

Fish tissue from various sampling locations in South Carolina rivers has shown elevated levels of mercury (Hg). A number of variables may impact this Hg in fish tissue and this study evaluated the impact of these variables using a predictive model. Over 341 variables were assembled from 6 different databases describing land use, water chemistry, point source pollutants, watershed characteristics and more. One dataset describes the location of historical gold mines throughout the sample site, which have been shown to increase Hg in fish tissue in other locations. The variables were assembled in ArcGIS to evaluate variable significance and to …
