Measurement Of Single- And Double-Spin Asymmetries In Deep Inelastic Pion Electroproduction With A Longitudinally Polarized Target, H. Avakian, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.
Physics Faculty Publications
We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep-inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Jefferson Lab (JLab). Modulations of single spin asymmetries over the azimuthal angle between lepton scattering and hadron production planes φ have been measured over a wide kinematic range in Bjorken x and virtual photon squared four-momentum Q2. A significant nonzero sin2φ single spin asymmetry was observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit …

Plans
The Climate Action Plan for the University of Richmond establishes the framework for achieving the University’s climate action goals under the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The University of Richmond’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020 and 100% by 2050. In addition to emissions reduction, the Climate Action Plan articulates goals for embedding sustainability into the curricular and co-curricular aspects of a Richmond education. The plan has been developed under the leadership of the Sustainability Working Group and the University’s Sustainability Coordinator. Climate Action Plan subgroups, with representation of staff, faculty, and students, drafted …
Christian Realism And Augustinian (?) Liberalism, Peter Iver Kaufman
Christian Realism And Augustinian (?) Liberalism, Peter Iver Kaufman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Surely there is enough kindling lying about in the Bible and in subsequent moral theology to fire up love for neighbors and compassion for countless “friends” in foreign parts--and in crisis. And, surely, the momentum of love’s labor for the just redistribution of resources, fueled by activists’ appeals for solidarity, should be sustained by stressing that we are creatures made for affection, not for aggression. Yet experience, plus the history of the Christian traditions, taught Reinhold Niebuhr, who memorably reminded Christian realists, how often love was “defeated,” how a “strategy of brotherhood . . . degenerates from mutuality to a …

Sources Of The Radio Background Considered, Jack Singal, L. Stawarz, A. Lawrence, V. Petrosian
Physics Faculty Publications
We investigate different scenarios for the origin of the extragalactic radio background. The surface brightness of the background, as reported by the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission 2 (ARCADE 2) collaboration, is several times higher than that which would result from currently observed radio sources. We consider contributions to the background from diffuse synchrotron emission from clusters and the intergalactic medium, previously unrecognized flux from low-surface-brightness regions of radio sources and faint point sources below the flux limit of existing surveys. By examining radio source counts available in the literature, we conclude that most of the radio …

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
As Thomas Jefferson neared the end of his long life ("with one foot in the grave and the other uplifted to follow it", as he put it), he had occasion to reflect on that extraordinary generation of which he so proudly had been a part. He was convinced that the "host of worthies" that comprised his "generation of 1776" had secured to all mankind in all future times the philosophical grounds for "the blessings and security of self-government", and thereby "the rights of man". Yet his pride in the accomplishments of his own generation was tempered by the nagging fear …

Electrochemical Investigation Of Azurin Thermodynamic And Adsorption Properties At Monolayer-Protected Cluster Film Assemblies – Evidence For A More Homogeneous Adsorption Interface, Tran Doan, Morgan Lynn Vargo, John K. Gerig, Chris P. Gulka, Matthew L. Trawick, Jonathan D. Dattelbaum, Michael C. Leopold
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Thermodynamic and adsorption properties of protein monolayer electrochemistry (PME) are examined for Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin (AZ) immobilized at an electrode modified with a networked film of monolayer-protected clusters (MPCs) to assess if nanoparticle films of this nature offer a more homogeneous adsorption interface compared to traditional self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified electrodes. Specifically, electrochemistry is used to assess properties of surface coverage, formal potential, peak broadening, and electron transfer (ET) kinetics as a function of film thickness. The modification of a surface with dithiol-linked films of MPCs (Au225C675) provides a more uniform binding interface for AZ that results in voltammetry with …

The tadpole of Proceratophrys renalis is described based on specimens from Maceió, State of Alagoas, northeastern Brazil. At stage 35 the body is slightly dorso-ventrally depressed, ovoid in lateral, dorsal, and ventral views. Oral disc is ventral with lateral emarginations, surrounded by a single row of marginal papillae with a large gap on the upper labium. Labial tooth row formula is 2(2)/3(1 ). The analysis of internal oral anatomy revealed two possible characters that readily distinguish P. renalis from P. boiei, supporting the recent resurrection of P. renal is. Comparisons with available descriptions of the larvae for other species in …

Tensor Correlations Measured In 3He(E,E',Pp)N, H. Baghdasaryan, Gerard P. Gilfoyle, Et. Al.
Physics Faculty Publications
We have measured the 3He(e, e', pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs by using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum ptot. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0:5 GeV / c, the ratio is very small at low ptot and rises to approximately 0.5 at large ptot. This …

Firms from emerging economies are rapidly becoming formidable competitors to established industry leaders from developed economies. Aside from anecdotal reports, there is little scholarly evidence concerning the operational details of how emerging economy firms are becoming competitive with developed economy firms. This article addresses the gap by building on the International Business, Strategy and Information Systems literature, and through an empirical analysis of original survey data for 468 firms across ten countries. We develop three primary empirical findings. First, despite the differences between emerging economy firms and developed economy firms, we find that emerging economy/high internationalization firms use marketing- and …

Community Development Authorities, Andrew A. Painter
University of Richmond Law Review
Today, CDAs of varying sizes and purposes have been authorized by at least fourteen Virginia localities, and approximately twenty have issued bonds." Despite progress, CDAs occupy anarea of Virginia law largely in its infancy. Case law directly related to their use remains limited, and many localities remain uncertain about their use since the unique marriage of private development and public power inherent in the CDA process has, at times, fostered controversy and apprehension. While this article does not directly address the public policy implications of using CDAs to finance infrastructure, the author hopes this review will generate further ideas for …

Bifurcation Of Civil Trials, John P. Rowley Iii, Richard G. Moore
Bifurcation Of Civil Trials, John P. Rowley Iii, Richard G. Moore
University of Richmond Law Review
Despite its widespread and long-standing recognition as a valuable docket-control device, the bifurcation of issues in civil trials has generated considerable debate among legal scholars and judges. The state and federal courts both utilize bifurcation, andthe Supreme Court of Appeals in Virginia recognized the advantages of the procedural device as early as 1915. Nonetheless, authority for the bifurcation of issues in civil trials in Virginia has remained clouded. The Supreme Court of Virginia lifted at least some of the clouds when it decided Allstate Insurance Co. v. Wade, thereby rejecting the position taken in an amicus curiae brief filed …

Much Ado About Nothing Much: Protestant Episcopal Church In The Diocese Of Virginia V. Truro Church, Henry L. Chambers Jr., Isaac A. Mcbeth
University of Richmond Law Review
This essay reviews the issues the Supreme Court of Virginia resolved in Truro and notes important issues it did not resolve. Part II supplies the factual background and procedural history ofthe dispute. Part III summarizes the court's opinion and the reasoning underlying its determination that Virginia Code section57-9(A) is not applicable to this particular action. Part IV critiques the opinion, noting the issues the court resolved and how it resolved them. Part V briefly addresses issues that remain unresolved by the court's decision and discusses the implications of leaving those issues unresolved. Part VI presents the authors' conclusions.
