Atrial Natriuretic Factor In Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Kyriakos Tarasidis
Atrial Natriuretic Factor In Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Kyriakos Tarasidis
Master's Theses
The basis for the great osmoregulatory ability in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil, has been studied previously, but as yet no clear mechanism has been determined. The present study investigated the level of cardiac atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) under high and low sodium stress. In addition, cardiac ANF values for the Mongolian gerbil were compared with another desert mammal (Mesocricetus auratus, the Syrian golden hamster) and a non-desert mammal, (Rattus norvegicus, the white rat). ANF was found to exist in the hear atria of the Mongolian gerbil at a level of 388±66 µg ANF/g tissue. High and low sodium stress …
Effects Of Adrenalectomy On Hemoconcentration And Blood Ph, Urea And Electrolytes In The Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones Unguiculatus), Magally Aellos De Cova
Effects Of Adrenalectomy On Hemoconcentration And Blood Ph, Urea And Electrolytes In The Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones Unguiculatus), Magally Aellos De Cova
Master's Theses
The effects of adrenalectomy on some blood profiles of the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, were studied in order to clarify the possible causes of its short survival after adrenal ablation. Measurements of hematocrit, pH, urea and electrolytes were made 18, 24 and 30 hours after surgery. Results show the expected alterations: hemoconcentration, metabolic acidosis, high values of urea and disturbances in electrolytes. While hyponatremia was significant only after 24 hours, important hypochloremia was not present at any time. Hyperkalemia was the most significant alteration observed. It occurred as early as 18 hours after surgery, suggesting that it may be an …
The Effects Of Photoperiod And Melatonin Injections On The Reproductive System Of The Male Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones Unguiculatus), Luis Jose Cova Marchan
The Effects Of Photoperiod And Melatonin Injections On The Reproductive System Of The Male Mongolian Gerbil (Meriones Unguiculatus), Luis Jose Cova Marchan
Master's Theses
This work was undertaken to study the effects of photoperiod and melatonin on fertility in male Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Four groups of fifteen animals each, were placed in different photoperiods (ambient, ranging from 14L:10D to 11.3L:12.3D; 24L:10D; 14L:10D; and 1L:23D). After 35 days, three gerbils from each photoperiod condition were sacrificed and the testes, epididymides, seminal vesicles, prostate, kidneys, adrenals, thymus and hypophysis were weighed. The testes and epididymides were placed in Bouin's fixative and used for histological studies. Also, two males from each photoperiod condition were paired individually with a female. The remaining animals of each photoperiod condition …
The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia
The Role Of The Adrenal Cortex In Fat Metabolism Of Meriones Unguiculatus, The Mongolian Gerbil, Saffia Baggia
Master's Theses
The effects of adrenalectomy and corticoid replacement therapies on survival, weight loss, depot fat and blood free fatty acid were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received cortisol and aldosterone lived significantly longer and lost significantly more weight than the controls (adrenalectomized gerbils not receiving any treatment) and the sham-operated groups. Cortisol and aldosterone treatment were also effective in mobilizing significantly greater amounts of depot fat into free fatty acid. Cortisol and aldosterone treated groups had significantly less blood free fatty acid than the control and the sham-operated groups.
The Role Of Adrenomedullary Hormones In Survival Of The Adrenalectomized Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Carol B. Ussery
The Role Of Adrenomedullary Hormones In Survival Of The Adrenalectomized Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Carol B. Ussery
Master's Theses
Thee effects of adrenalectomy and catecholamine replacement therapy on survival were studied in Meriones unguiculatus, the Mongolian gerbil. Adrenalectomized gerbils that received epinephrine lived significantly longer than the controls untreated adrenalectomized gerbils) and animals that received either norepinephrine or a combination of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Results also indicated that these epinephrine-treated animals lost more depot fat that either controls or other groups receiving treatment. In spite of the short survival benefit given by epinephrine, the mechanisms governing the critical adrenal dependency in this species remain unknown.
The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood
The Effects Of Osmotic Stress On Sodium, Potassium, And Chloride Metabolism In The Mongolian Gerbil, Meriones Unguiculatus, Mark William Hagood
Master's Theses
The effects of osmotic stress on sodium, potassium, and chloride metabolism and the physiological mechanisms governing these ions were studied in the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus. Animals were subjected to dietary regimens ranging from sodium-free to high-sodium diets for sixty days. Results indicate the gerbils were not physiologically stressed by the imposed diets. Apparently the animals regulate ion metabolism via intrarenal mechanisms and pituitary antidiuretic hormone while behavior and adrenal cortical activity are insignificant.
Regulation Of Sodium Intake In The Mongolian Gerbil, Kevin Douglas Stark
Regulation Of Sodium Intake In The Mongolian Gerbil, Kevin Douglas Stark
Master's Theses
In the present study, two experiments were conducted to examine how the gerbil (Merinos Unguiculatus) responds to a chronic sodium deficiency. Adult male gerbils with a mean body weight of 79.81 grams, were maintained for a baseline period on a normal Purina Rat Chow and then they were placed on a salt-free diet. In addition they had ad lib access to a salt solution and water in a two bottle test situation. The saline concentration was cut in half and doubled to test for regulation. There was no significant overall increase in saline consumption (expressed as a percentage of total …
Salt Appetite During Acute Sodium Deficiency In The Gerbil, Elvira K. Perewiznyk
Salt Appetite During Acute Sodium Deficiency In The Gerbil, Elvira K. Perewiznyk
Master's Theses
In the present study, two experiments were conducted to examine the gerbil's response to acute sodium deficiency. Adult male gerbils were either exposed to a 1% b.w. subcutaneous injection of 1.5% formalin or a vehicle control injection. Within each injection level, half the animals were further assigned to either an isotonic saline or a water vehicle. Immediately following the injection, each S had access to isotonic saline and water as their drinking fluid. The formalin dissolved in water group displayed a significant increase in saline consumption, but at the same time decreased their water intake, in comparison to the water …
