The Effect Of Two Competitive Conditions And A Non-Competitive Condition On Performance And Retention On A Recognition Task, Thomas J. Comiskey Jan 1976

The Effect Of Two Competitive Conditions And A Non-Competitive Condition On Performance And Retention On A Recognition Task, Thomas J. Comiskey

Open Access Dissertations

Based on a review of the literature on competition, several hypotheses on the effects of competitive instructional set on both speed and accuracy measures were explored using a paired associate learning paradigm. One hundred and forty second graders (70 boys and 70 girls) were randomly assigned to three instructional treatments: speed competition, accuracy competition and non-competition. The competitive groups were further divided into relative positions of win, lose and tie; subjects were equally divided by sex, Although the subjects in the speed competition group performed significantly faster than subjects in the other conditions, no significant differences were found between any …

Particulate Matter In Surface Seawater: Sources, Chemical Composition, And Affinity For The Sea-Air Interface, Gordon T. Wallace Jr. Jan 1976

Particulate Matter In Surface Seawater: Sources, Chemical Composition, And Affinity For The Sea-Air Interface, Gordon T. Wallace Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

An adsorptive bubble separation technique was used to examine the ability of bubbles to transport particulate matter in surface seawater samples. A substantial fraction of the particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) could be recovered in the froth generated by this technique from both estuarine and open-ocean surface waters. Recovery values were lower in samples taken during periods of high productivity. C/N ratios of the particulate matter recovered in the froth were generally not significantly different from the particulate matter not recoverable by this technique. Budget calculations indicated that there was no significant conversion of dissolved organic …

Agency/Communion Balance And Its Relationship To Sex Role Stereotyping, Dorothy Thompson Jan 1976

Agency/Communion Balance And Its Relationship To Sex Role Stereotyping, Dorothy Thompson

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to examine a model of interacting with life situations which does not carry with it the restrictions implicit in the masculinity-femininity-androgeny concepts. However, the model includes positive aspects of behavior generally imbedded in the masculinity- femininity concepts. This model utilizes David Bakan's (1966) concepts of agency and communion, modifying his description of these modes of interacting and positing a complementary (completing, non-conflicting) relation between them. An agency/communion theoretical model was developed which emphasizes the potential for balance between the modes. Problems with the traditional gender dichotomy were discussed. The transcending of sex roles and …

Hydrocarbon Analysis Of Surface Seawater And Beach Sand By Infrared Absorption Methods, Wai-Ping Teresa Lee Jan 1976

Hydrocarbon Analysis Of Surface Seawater And Beach Sand By Infrared Absorption Methods, Wai-Ping Teresa Lee

Open Access Dissertations

Qualitative and quantitative measurements of hydrocarbon contents in the marine environment are very important because of their persistence and the possible toxicity to all aquatic organisms A rapid method for analyzing hydrocarbons in marine surface estuarine waters and beach sands was developed Infrared spectroscopy was employed as the main analytical tool for both qualitative and quantitative determination of. hydrocarbons found in the marine environment. In addition to infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography was also used in some parts of this study for characterizing the samples. Thin-layer chromatography was used to separate the sample to its separable fractions according to different polarities. …

Analysis Of Chilean Fisheries Expansion Alternatives, Luis Alberto Adriasola Jan 1976

Analysis Of Chilean Fisheries Expansion Alternatives, Luis Alberto Adriasola

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the expansion of the Chilean fisheries focusing on the processing and marketing activities for seven fish species that represent over 90% of the catch and for two groups of the remaining fish species. A review is made of the current condition of the Chilean fisheries, its expansion potential and some possible expansion alternatives. It is established that there exists an ample potential for the expansion of the catch and physical production of fishery commodities. A model is developed to characterize the economic system formed by the fisheries extractive and related activities and assess the profitability of investment …

Ecology Of Parathemisto Libellula And P. Pacifica (Amphipoda: Hyperiidea) In Alaskan Coastal Waters, Bruce L. Wing Jan 1976

Ecology Of Parathemisto Libellula And P. Pacifica (Amphipoda: Hyperiidea) In Alaskan Coastal Waters, Bruce L. Wing

Open Access Dissertations

The planktonic amphipods Parathemisto libellula and P. pacifica coexist in coastal waters from southeastern Alaska (56° N) to the south-eastern Chukchi Sea (70° N). Observations on distribution, reproductive cycles, diets, metabolism, and starvation tolerance contribute to understanding this case of congeneric coexistence.

Samples were collected monthly from September 1969 to October 1970 in southeastern Alaska, from May to September 1969 in the southeastern Bering Sea, and in September-October 1970 in the southeastern Chukchi Sea. Respiratory metabolism and starvation tolerance were studied in winter-caught amphipods from southeastern Alaska.

Both species consistently occurred above 300 min southeastern Alaska. In the southeastern Bering …

The Effects Of Self-Imposed And Externally Imposed Rewards Of Children's Intrinsic Motivation, Douglas Lee Schooler Jan 1976

The Effects Of Self-Imposed And Externally Imposed Rewards Of Children's Intrinsic Motivation, Douglas Lee Schooler

Open Access Dissertations

An experiment was designed to compare the effects of self-imposed, externally imposed, and a no reward control, on children's interest in both a high and low listening task. A hypothesis grounded in personal control theory predicted that self-imposed rewards would increase subsequent task interest, whereas externally imposed reward would interact with initial task interest and would yield a decrease in interest for the high interest task and an increase in interest for the low interest task. A secondary hypothesis predicted that children would self-reward with greater magnitude on the low interest task. The subjects, 48 boys and 48 girls from …

Cognitive Complexity Of Clinical Psychology Students In Relation To Their Evaluation Of Contributions To Psychology, Dannel Hussey Starbird Jan 1976

Cognitive Complexity Of Clinical Psychology Students In Relation To Their Evaluation Of Contributions To Psychology, Dannel Hussey Starbird

Open Access Dissertations

The present study addressed the possibility that cognitive-complexity (Bieri, et al., 1966) relates to the

relative breadth with which clinical psychology students assess relevant contributions to psychology. A Q sort measure of view of psychology was devised using the names of 30 contributors to clinical and 30 contributors to nonclinical psychology. It was proposed that clinical psychology students with a narrow view of psychology would place greater emphasis upon clinical contributors, and that this tendency would be positively correlated with their level of cognitive-complexity. Secondly, it was hypothesized that there are not sex differences in cognitive-complexity, and that measures of …
