A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing, Zachary Herrmann Jun 2020

A Wolf In Sheep’S Clothing, Zachary Herrmann

Relics, Remnants, and Religion: An Undergraduate Journal in Religious Studies

This paper seeks to explore the rejection of Messianic Judaism from normative Jewish faith. Using Mary Douglas' theory that "wholeness of category" equates "holiness," this paper provides an insight into the flawed relationship between Messianic Jewish sects and Jewish ritual laws. These primary source texts are supplemented by a selection of secondary sources from Jewish scholars who have provided further explanation demonstrating why Messianic Judaism continues to be excluded by Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and other Jewish sects alike. Through in-depth analysis, the goal is to demonstrate how the necessity for exclusion of Messianic Jews has persisted, especially in the face …

Naming Resistance And Religion In The Teaching Of Race And White Supremacy: A Pedagogy Of Counter-Signification For Black Lives Matter, Martin Nguyen

Race and Pedagogy Journal: Teaching and Learning for Justice

The need to bring religion into our teaching of race and white supremacy is critically important, but by simply naming it, we take the first step in inviting our students to understand the how’s and why’s of it. The pedagogy of naming described herein, which is inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter movement, is theoretically grounded in the theory of signification and counter-signification developed by scholars of religion, Charles H. Long and Richard Brent Turner. I explore how the act of naming, as a form of signification, can be employed to heuristically structure intersectional considerations of religion in the teaching of a …

Heaven's Gate's Website: The Group Is Gone, The Religion Lives On, Eli Ewing Jan 2018

Heaven's Gate's Website: The Group Is Gone, The Religion Lives On, Eli Ewing

Relics, Remnants, and Religion: An Undergraduate Journal in Religious Studies

The bodies of Heaven’s Gate were found by a former member in a mansion in California, each lying on a mattress with a five dollar bill and three quarters in their pockets, plastic bags over their heads, and for most, a purple shroud covering their bodies. Many things led up to this movement, and one of them was their use of the internet. Their knowledge of technology was highly advanced at the time, although it may seem “retro” and dated today. The web was a vital piece of Heaven’s Gate; from earning income to proselytizing and documenting, the internet was …

The Dangerous Discourse Of Dianetics: Linguistic Manifestations Of Violence Toward Queerness In The Canonical Religious Philosophy Of Scientology, Francesca Retana May 2017

The Dangerous Discourse Of Dianetics: Linguistic Manifestations Of Violence Toward Queerness In The Canonical Religious Philosophy Of Scientology, Francesca Retana

Relics, Remnants, and Religion: An Undergraduate Journal in Religious Studies

At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.[1] I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what …

The Methodology Of Resistance In Contemporary Neopaganism, Rebecca Short Jan 2012

The Methodology Of Resistance In Contemporary Neopaganism, Rebecca Short

Summer Research

This paper seeks to evaluate the generalizations made by scholars about the inherent attitudes and identification of counter-culturalism in NeoPaganism. By critiquing and expanding the ritual theory of Catherine Bell and employing the language of ritualization, this paper demonstrates that broad statements about a wildly individualistic and mufti-faceted culture cannot encapsulate the myriad of ways NeoPagans do and do not confront dominant culture.
