A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Severe Asthma And Its Treatment Showing That Treatment Burden Is Neglected In Existing Asthma Assessment Scales., Michael E. Hyland, Ben Whalley, Rupert C. Jones, Matthew Masoli Sep 2014

A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of Severe Asthma And Its Treatment Showing That Treatment Burden Is Neglected In Existing Asthma Assessment Scales., Michael E. Hyland, Ben Whalley, Rupert C. Jones, Matthew Masoli

School of Psychology

BACKGROUND: People with severe asthma experience significant respiratory symptoms and suffer adverse effects of oral corticosteroids (OCS), including disturbed mood and physical symptoms. OCS impacts on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) have not been quantified. Asthma HRQoL scales are valid as outcome measures for patients requiring OCS only if they assess the deficits imposed by OCS. AIMS: The aim of this study was to compare the burden of disease and treatment in patients with severe asthma with items in eight asthma-specific HRQoL scales. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with severe asthma recruited from a severe asthma clinic were interviewed about the impact …

Modelling The Impact Of Improving Screening And Treatment Of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection On Future Hepatocellular Carcinoma Rates And Liver-Related Mortality., Matthew E. Cramp, William M. Rosenberg, Steven D. Ryder, Sarah Blach, Julie Parkes Jul 2014

Modelling The Impact Of Improving Screening And Treatment Of Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection On Future Hepatocellular Carcinoma Rates And Liver-Related Mortality., Matthew E. Cramp, William M. Rosenberg, Steven D. Ryder, Sarah Blach, Julie Parkes

BACKGROUND: The societal, clinical and economic burden imposed by the complications of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection - including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) - is expected to increase over the coming decades. However, new therapies may improve sustained virological response (SVR) rates and shorten treatment duration. This study aimed to estimate the future burden of HCV-related disease in England if current management strategies remain the same and the impact of increasing diagnosis and treatment of HCV as new therapies become available. METHODS: A previously published model was adapted for England using published literature and government reports, and validated …

A Written Self-Help Intervention For Depressed Adults Comparing Behavioural Activation Combined With Physical Activity Promotion With A Self-Help Intervention Based Upon Behavioural Activation Alone: Study Protocol For A Parallel Group Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial (Bacpac)., Paul Farrand, Claire Pentecost, Colin Greaves, Rs Taylor, Fiona Warren, Colin Green, Melvyn Hillsdon, Phil Evans, Jo Welsman, Ah Taylor May 2014

BACKGROUND: Challenges remain to find ways to support patients with depression who have low levels of physical activity (PA) to overcome perceived barriers and enhance the perceived value of PA for preventing future relapse. There is an evidence-base for behavioural activation (BA) for depression, which focuses on supporting patients to restore activities that have been avoided, but practitioners have no specific training in promoting PA. We aimed to design and evaluate an integrated BA and PA (BAcPAc) practitioner-led, written, self-help intervention to enhance both physical and mental health. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is informed by the Medical Research Council Complex Intervention …

A Biological, Latent Variable Model Of Health (Earlybird 68)., Michael E. Hyland, Alison N. Jeffery, Terence J. Wilkin

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether factor analysis of a set of health-related biomarkers provides evidence of an underlying common dimension of variation, and to explore the relationship between this dimension of variation with positive and negative affect. METHOD: Twelve health-related metabolic, immune and body-composition biomarkers at ages 5, 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16years were obtained from the EarlyBird longitudinal cohort of 347 children and supplemented by positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) measured at age 16years. RESULTS: At each age, principal factor analysis revealed that nine of the 12 biomarkers consistently loaded on the first extracted factor, accounting for …
