Literature-Based Children's Programs On Iowa Public Television, Rita Carney Jan 1990

Literature-Based Children's Programs On Iowa Public Television, Rita Carney

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this content analysis was to determine whether literature-based television programs on the Iowa Public Television ( IPTV ) channel have the type of content that would encurage children to read. The research included determining the content of the programs: what types of literature were reviewed, if persons of both sexes and various races were portrayed, the production quality of the programs and whether students were directly encouraged to read through the programs.

A Case For The Sexual Impulsivity Perspective For Describing Issues Of Sexual Control, Barton A. Wieden Jan 1990

A Case For The Sexual Impulsivity Perspective For Describing Issues Of Sexual Control, Barton A. Wieden

Graduate Research Papers

Currently, existing sexual dysfunction information has centered upon sexual desire and/or sexual response. Unfortunately, the concern over what has been referred to as sexual compulsivity (Quadland, 1985), sexual addiction (Schwartz & Brasted, 1985; Carnes, 1983), and sexual impulsivity (Barth & Kinder, 1987) had been met with sparse research at best. Much of what is now available is based upon historical discussions of hyperactive sexuality or nymphomania and satyriasis, the former receiving, the plurality of attention despite its lack of an operational definition and its sexist and judgmental connotation (Quadland, 1985).

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast Jan 1990

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast

Graduate Research Papers

Children's care of themselves in the absence of adult supervision has existed since the industrial revolution and is an important part of current reality. To ensure that 1 keys to houses are not lost, many children, responsible for letting themselves into their homes after school, are required by their parents to wear keys on a chain around their necks. This explains where the term "latchkey" originated and why these kids are called this today. The latchkey problem is not new; it was a concern more than 80 years ago. Stroman and Duff (1982) reported that the theme of the 1943 …

New Perspectives On Alcoholism In Women And Their Implications For Prevention, Outreach And Treatment, Joan Jorgensen Hoeft Jan 1990

New Perspectives On Alcoholism In Women And Their Implications For Prevention, Outreach And Treatment, Joan Jorgensen Hoeft

Graduate Research Papers

Alcoholism is one of the most serious public health problems in the United States today (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985). Alcoholism and alcohol abuse account for approximately 98,000 deaths annually, and twenty percent of national expenditures for hospital care (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985). One out of three Americans (56 million) said alcohol abuse has caused problems for their families (National Council on Alcoholism, 1985).

Intervention Strategies For High-Risk Students, Richard C. Keith Jan 1990

Intervention Strategies For High-Risk Students, Richard C. Keith

Graduate Research Papers

The opportunity to achieve and aspire to goals is a human right. During the past decade, most schools have increased standards for high school graduation. Changes in family structure, social environment, and economics have negatively affected various student populations. Higher standards for high school completion, changing family structure, and social expectations of students have contributed to students having difficulty mastering academics and related behaviors necessary for success in school. Failure at all levels of the educational spectrum have resulted (Iowa Department Of Education [IDOE], 1989).

Job Satisfaction & Career Alienation Among Teachers At A Parochial High School, Kevin Michael Barnett Jan 1990

Job Satisfaction & Career Alienation Among Teachers At A Parochial High School, Kevin Michael Barnett

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to investigate teachers' level of overall job dissatisfaction/career alienation, and to determine which work related elements were most related to overall job dissatisfaction/career alienation. The subjects consisted of 14 out of a possible 41 regular education teachers at a selected parochial high school in the Midwest. The May, Porter & White (1990) Job Satisfaction Survey and a supplemental survey concerning ecological/environmental psychology concerns was administered. Nine hypotheses were tested, and several items concerning work related elements were examined for their relationship to overall job dissatisfaction/career alienation. The results revealed that the level of overall …

Principal's Role With At-Risk Students, Stephen W. Vanderpol Jan 1990

Principal's Role With At-Risk Students, Stephen W. Vanderpol

Graduate Research Papers

In the last three years more research has taken place dealing with at-risk children than during the past 20 years. That statistic alone suggests a crisis is facing our educational system. What is an "at-risk student?" Simply stated, it means any student that is in danger of failing to complete his or her education, with an adequate level of skills (Salvin 1989).

Performances At An Aids Memorial Quilt Display: An Ethnographic Study Of Rehearsal, Joyce Anne Flodin Jan 1990

Performances At An Aids Memorial Quilt Display: An Ethnographic Study Of Rehearsal, Joyce Anne Flodin

Graduate Research Papers

Several tentative research questions posed early in the study focused on the audience. The study of audience was later abandoned because it would not have been feasible for one researcher to conduct analyses of audiences while also observing performers. A study of these audiences would have been interesting because these were not a typical audience coming to a theatre for entertainment. These audiences were emotionally tied to the topic of the texts. Most of the audience members were highly knowledgeable about AIDS and related issues. The only audience analyses in this study were the directors' and performers' impressions of audience …

The Image Of The Adolescent Girl In Recommended Romantic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1989, Judy Elaine Mcclure Jan 1990

The Image Of The Adolescent Girl In Recommended Romantic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1989, Judy Elaine Mcclure

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this content analysis was to investigate how realistically novelists portrayed the image of the teenage girl in fiction written for young adults. The researcher analyzed twenty-two books with copyrights from 1979 to 1989, novels identified in Booklist which had one additional review and were. still in print at the time of the study. A checklist adapted from Offer's Self-Image Questionnaire was used in analyzing the psychological self, social self, sexual self, familial self, and coping self.

With the use of the checklist the following hypotheses were accepted:

1. The majority of the romantic fiction of the 1980's …

Women And Minorities In Technical Courses In Iowa, Myrna Whigham Jan 1990

Women And Minorities In Technical Courses In Iowa, Myrna Whigham

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Recent national reports indicate that math and science education is in a crisis in the United States (Changing America, 1988 and Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, 1988). Concern has been expressed by many national groups that we must attract and keep more young people in the pipeline to meet future needs for scientists and engineers. Because the need for scientists is projected to increase by 45 percent, for engineers 32 percent and for technicians 36 percent, but the population of 18-24 year olds entering the labor force is expected to decline, the U.S. must attract more women and …

Science Career Day: A Recruitment Strategy For High School Students, Sherman Lundy Jan 1990

Science Career Day: A Recruitment Strategy For High School Students, Sherman Lundy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many students do not picture themselves in science-related careers primarily because they are not informed about the opportunities available and the secondary and post-secondary education required for those jobs. To most students, people in science careers include physicians, nurses, scientists (whatever that means), engineers and possibly chemists. A few students are aware of additional career choices in geology and astronomy. The science careers most talked about are related to nature and wildlife, but students are not certain what is involved in these occupations. Vast numbers of jobs are, or soon will be, available in the fields of science and technology, …

Selected Aspects Of Alzheimer's Disease, Karla Ratekin Jan 1990

Selected Aspects Of Alzheimer's Disease, Karla Ratekin

Graduate Research Papers

Alzheimer's disease consists of a progressive atrophy of the brain without a known cause or cure (Gruetzner, 1988; Jarvik, 1987, in Karlicki, 1987; u. s. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, 1987; Pajk, 1984). This disease affects 50% of the 2-6 million Americans suffering from dementing illnesses (Rabins & Folstein, 1983; Mace & Rabins, 1981). The number of Americans suffering from dementing illnesses could rise to 7.4 million by the year 2000 (U.S. Congress, Office of Technology Assessment, 1987).

Identity Issues And Psychosocial Problems Of Gay Adolescents: Implications For The School Counselor, Brenda Helm Thompson Jan 1990

Identity Issues And Psychosocial Problems Of Gay Adolescents: Implications For The School Counselor, Brenda Helm Thompson

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, gay people have come under heavy repression in this country, causing them to become an invisible minority, even though they account for approximately 10% of the population (Dworkin & Gutierrez, 1989). Although gay rights and gay liberation embodied significant movements toward freedom from oppression for gay activists of the late 1960's and 1970's, that freedom-to-be is not a reality yet today. Today's gay youth, not yet born when the gay revolution caught fire, are relegated to a stigmatized role in a homophobic society. (In this paper the term "gay" will be used to refer to both male and female …

Adult Development And Career Stage Theories: Their Application To Staff Development Of Teachers In Midcareer, Margaret Mary Weigel Jan 1990

Adult Development And Career Stage Theories: Their Application To Staff Development Of Teachers In Midcareer, Margaret Mary Weigel

Graduate Research Papers

State policies, local policies, A Nation at Risk. The Carnegie Task Force and the Holmes Group are among the wave of school reports and reforms that have caught schools in a cross-fire of conflicting demands to be more effective. The approaches of school reform range from state-mandated teacher accountability programs, professionalized training, philosophical questions about schooling's structure, mission and methods. The "second wave" reforms have stressed the need to enhance teacher morale, motivation, and participation (Mitchell & Peters, 1988).

Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon Jan 1990

Stress And Graduate School, Irene D. Gordon

Graduate Research Papers

Graduate students face an increased number of activities and responsibilities while in graduate school that, taken together, can be stressful. Upon entering graduate school, a graduate assistant becomes involved in activities such as becoming a staff member, teachers assistant, advisor, counselor, or research assistant. The student must also carry a heavy course load in addition to the requirements of a graduate assistantship. This increase in activities is in addition to other problems the student already may face: family anxiety, unevenness in preparation and experiences among students, program inflexibility, and lack of support services for graduate students. Researchers have determined that …

Occupational Outcomes Of Bachelor's Degrees Earned By Nontraditional Students, Mary Ellen Ellyson Wacker Jan 1990

Occupational Outcomes Of Bachelor's Degrees Earned By Nontraditional Students, Mary Ellen Ellyson Wacker

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the occupational outcomes of bachelor's degrees earned by individuals when they are 25 years or older, here called nontraditional graduates. The subjects of the study were 212 nontraditional graduates of the University of Northern Iowa. They were randomly selected from a list of individuals who received their college degrees from 1984 to 1988 and who were 25 years old or older at the time they graduated. A questionnaire was designed by the researcher that elicited information about the subjects' reasons for deciding to earn a college degree and about their past and …

Act Scores Of Iowa Public High School Students: School, Student, And Family Variables, Anthony W. Pappas Jan 1990

Act Scores Of Iowa Public High School Students: School, Student, And Family Variables, Anthony W. Pappas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The American College Test (ACT) is a nationally normed test developed by the American College Testing program in Iowa City, Iowa. The test battery assesses the aptitude of high school students and is especially important for those students who wish to attend a post-secondary educational institution. The ACT assessment is a comprehensive evaluation, guidance, and placement service for educators and students in the transition from high school to college. This study examined the relationship between ACT test scores and certain selected student, school and family variables.

The sample for this study was the 1986-1987 ACT test taking population of senior …

The Relationship Between Verbal-Performance Iq And Locus Of Control Among Students With Either A Learning Disability Or A Behavior Disorder, Rick J. Bagnall Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Verbal-Performance Iq And Locus Of Control Among Students With Either A Learning Disability Or A Behavior Disorder, Rick J. Bagnall

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Locus of control is one psychological variable which can explain differences in how students deal with difficulties and how they explain these difficulties to themselves. Studies conducted with students who have emotional and behavioral problems have described them as having an external locus of control when compared to their peers (Kauffman, 1985; Morse, Cutler, & Fink, 1964).

In attempts to find identifying charateristics unique to behaviorally disordered students, research by Dean (1978), using emotionally handicapped children, determined that they had a significantly lower Verbal IQ mean than that obtained on the Performance IQ scale p<.01. The differences between Verbal and Performance IQs were not significant for learning disabled children.

The purpose of this study …

The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Noel N. Schmidt Jan 1990

The Relationship Between The Constructs Of Locus Of Control And Learner Self-Concept, Noel N. Schmidt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many researchers agree that a student's level of self-esteem is important to success and self-esteem (Chapman & Boersma, 1980). If a student's level of self-esteem can be raised, this improvement may lead to improvement in other areas such as academic achievement (Shavelson & Bolus, 1982). In addition, teaching students to attribute success to themselves should improve self-esteem (Gurney, 1987). Consequently, teaching an internal locus of control to students could be a concern for the local school district (Stipek & Weisz, 1981). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship which exists between the constructs of locus of control …

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas Jan 1990

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years the problem of depression among children and adolescents has become increasingly important to educators and mental health professionals such as school psychologists. Documented increases in depressive symptoms among school-age youth may be reflected in an increase in acting out behaviors in the school settings which, in turn may adversely affect academic performance, teacher expectations, and peer relationships. This study investigated the incidence of depression in a parochial high school using a self-report procedure and compared with non-parochial studies. Differences between male and female students were analyzed, it was expected to find also an inverse correlation between the …

The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry Jan 1990

The Effects Of Divorce And Resulting Single-Parent Family Environment On The Social And Educational Development Of The Gifted Child, George E. Lowry

Graduate Research Papers

Divorce can be a very difficult time for adults, but it can be even more difficult for the children, who often do not understand all that is happening around them or why it is happening. They have no control over events that are taking place. Worst of all, they often have no one to whom they can talk, no one who is not somehow involved in the divorce situation. Gifted children are among the children who are frequently caught up in such a situation, and who later must adapt to living in a single-parent family as a result of divorce. …

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford Jan 1990

A Study To Identify Stress Factors Of Early Childhood Special Education Teachers, Brenda Marie Hanken-Crawford

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Stress, an everyday fact of life, can be either positive or negative (Bradfield & Fones, 1985a; Truch, 1980). When faced with too little stress, a lack of productivity may occur, however, when faced with too much stress, anxiety and unhappiness may result (Johnson & Harkins, 1984).

A growing interest has developed concerning factors contributing to the stress of special education teachers (Fimian & Santoro, 1983). While the literature on stress has grown, research is very limited in the area of stress and early childhood special education teachers.

The purpose of this study was to identify (a) the stress producing variables …

Post-Hoc Longitudinal Study Of The Stability And Validity Of Standardized Test Scores Of Handicapped Children, Randal Dennis Brown Jan 1990

Post-Hoc Longitudinal Study Of The Stability And Validity Of Standardized Test Scores Of Handicapped Children, Randal Dennis Brown

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the delivery of special education services to handicapped children, a requirement to certify the nature and severity of each child's handicap was built into PL 94-142, The Education of All Handicapped Children Act (Reynolds, Gutkin, Elliott, & Witt, 1984). In the aftermath of that legislation has arisen a serious question as to whether or not the process of providing such services on a categorical (by nature of the handicapped) basis has led to an unanticipated social harm (stigma) of such a magnitude that the assessment process needs to be re-evaluated (Guskin, Bartel, & MacMillan, 1975). Part of the social …
