I will use examples from two of my short stories, “Maple Street” and “Sunday Mail,” to explain certain elements that go into writing characters. I will also be using the craft books Ron Carlson Writes a Story by Ron Carlson, Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft by Janet Burroway and Elizabeth Stuckey-French, The Art of Fiction by John Gardner, and Burning Down the House by Charles Baxter.
