Composing A Comprehensive Music Education: Teacher And Student Experiences With The Role Of Songwriting In Elementary General Music, Tara Neeley

Master's Theses

Music education has for many years focused on the musical role of performance and teaching from the traditional canon of Western classical music. In recent years, it has been noted that just a small portion of students participate in music offerings in secondary schools. Yet, the mission of the music education profession is for all students to experience and make music. To reach more students, music education must be relevant to students’ real world, pragmatic for a lifetime of musical involvement, and must help students build their identities. Providing a comprehensive music education in which students experience all musical roles, …

This constructionist phenomenological dissertation study explored stories from nine working class, first generation college students, specifically how middle class socialization on a four year university campus located in the Mountain West region of the United States impacts the relationships with their parent(s)/guardian(s). My primary research question was: How does attending college at a 4 year public university influence first generation, working class students’ relationships with the ir parent(s)/guardian(s)? My sub research questions were: What role does middle class socialization that occurs on a 4 year public university campus play in impacting this relationship? And what role does online learning/remote learning …

The Haitian Méringue Through Stylized Piano Compositions From 1880-1930, William Leroy Harned

Dissertations

This study primarily describes the Haitian méringue from a historical analysis and a collective musical analysis of digital editions published from 2016 to 2020 that include previously unavailable piano compositions from Haiti’s first composers. Secondarily, this study clarifies the performance practice of innovative rhythmic notations from Haiti and Puerto Rico to indicate a relaxed syncopation of the tresillo-based five-beat syncopated rhythm. The history of the development of the méringue involves the creolization of mainly European and African dances. Comparison with compositions of origin dances reveals common structures between them. The European salon style inspired these Haitian compositions that resemble Romantic …

Comprimario Tenor Repertoire: An Alternative Approach To Teaching The Developing Operatic Tenor, Stewart Cramer

Dissertations

Not every tenor is destined to sing romantic leading roles. Fortunately, the expansive body of secondary tenor repertoire is just as exciting. Not only are these roles a possible avenue for a successful career, they also offer a wealth of technical resources for young, developing tenors and their teachers. When diving into the wide-ranging and diverse world of the comprimario tenor, there are more than just Parpignols and Armoured Men; there are Frantzes, Witches, and Hylases. Each character demands unique technical, musical, emotional, and acting skills. This paper examines the pedagogical relevance of the comprimario tenor repertoire in the voice …

Projecting Ecuadorian Cultures In Andean Dream: A Compositional Exploration Of Psycho-Ethnomusicology For Electronics And Chamber Ensemble, Daniela Paez May 2021

Projecting Ecuadorian Cultures In Andean Dream: A Compositional Exploration Of Psycho-Ethnomusicology For Electronics And Chamber Ensemble, Daniela Paez

Master's Theses

The musical culture of Ecuador, despite being quite unknown to the world and to a great part of the Ecuadorian people, holds an unimaginable richness and diversity rooted in thousands of years of musical traditions. Mestizaje, the process of racial mixture that followed the European conquest, has encouraged homogeneity and uniformity. I am a part of this mestizo culture, that, in reality, does not hold the same worldviews as the diverse Indigenous Ecuadorian communities. The Kichwa community of Cotacachi, presented through musical materials in this thesis, experiences an undeniable connection between the rituals relevant to agricultural life, dance and music …

The Lullaby As Art Song: Engaging Repertoire For Study And Performance, Carissa Scroggins May 2021

The Lullaby As Art Song: Engaging Repertoire For Study And Performance, Carissa Scroggins

Dissertations

When selecting repertoire, teachers of singing do not often turn to lullabies. The consensus is they are too simple in melody, texture, and harmony to warrant attention. However, this commonly held view should be reconsidered because lullabies can offer dramatic text settings. Lullabies can be divided into two categories: those for practical use and those for performance. The latter are composed as art songs written from many perspectives. They can be nationalistic, violent, frustrated, funny, and can use sleep as a metaphor for the release of death. This wealth of subject matter and variety of styles and skill levels found …

Queerness In French Baroque Opera: The Relationship Between Achilles And Patroclus In Jean Baptiste Lully’S Achille Et Polyxène, Jason Thompson May 2021

Queerness In French Baroque Opera: The Relationship Between Achilles And Patroclus In Jean Baptiste Lully’S Achille Et Polyxène, Jason Thompson

Master's Theses

The myth of Achilles has long been considered a narrative model for homosexual relationships. Jean-Baptiste Lully set the story of Achilles and Patroclus to music in the first act of his last opera, Achille et Polyxène. In 17th-century France, various queer men held positions of significant influence, including members of the royal family, such as Louis XIII and Philippe of Orléans. Another powerful queer man was Louis Joseph de Bourbon, the duc de Vendôme who was part of an influential group of libertines. Lully entered the service of the duc in 1685, when he was banished from court after he …

Romantic Undertones In Revolutionary France: The Case For Tarare As Spark For The Revolution, Sean Robert Stephenson May 2021

Romantic Undertones In Revolutionary France: The Case For Tarare As Spark For The Revolution, Sean Robert Stephenson

Dissertations

Music is almost never cited among the causes of the French Revolution. Other arts are occasionally mentioned, such as painting and poetry, as are more obvious disciplines including philosophy and literature, which could directly disseminate the ideals of the Enlightenment. Despite this, music is only referenced insofar as how it was impacted by the Revolution, rather than how it may have played a part in the development of revolutionary sentiment. The purpose of this dissertation is to make a case for music as a cultural cause for the French Revolution by analyzing a relatively unknown opera, Tarare, by composer Antonio …

Pride And Prejudice, An Operatic Work For Ensemble Based On Jane Austen’S Novel, With Comparisons To Mozart’S Ensemble Opera Works, Sondheim’S Ensemble Musicals, And Mark Adamo’S Little Women, Arlene Brenda Siagian

Dissertations

Pride and Prejudice is an original composition. It adapts the storyline and various characters from Jane’s Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice, into an operatic ensemble work for the stage and theatre. The project is the result of an exploration into the characteristics and qualities of an ensemble opera, a work that derives its synergy from the interactions and collaborative efforts of memorable and varied performers. In an operatic setting, when a performer is immersed in the portrayal of a character, that nature is amplified when communicating with another role just as intentional and skillful. The sense of personality and singleness …

A Study In Effective Teaching Methods For Jazz Voice Technique In Higher Education, Jenna Mclean May 2021

A Study In Effective Teaching Methods For Jazz Voice Technique In Higher Education, Jenna Mclean

Dissertations

Academic study of jazz vocal styles is quickly becoming more commonplace and widely accepted at universities worldwide. Because this is a relatively new field as compared to Western classical styles, there are fewer educators who have substantial knowledge of vocal pedagogy specifically as it relates to jazz and Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM), resulting in a wide range of teaching approaches. Furthermore, many jazz voice teachers are tasked with the responsibility of educating students in improvisation, theory, arranging, and style in addition to their responsibility to teach technique. This dissertation defines necessary elements of vocal technique in jazz and evaluates the …

Participants were the instructor of an introductory music course and 16 of her students at a medium-sized university in the western United States. Study of this group of participants and their interactions throughout one 15-week semester led to greater understanding of their roles in music as well as better insight into the many ways in which they formed connections between music and their identity concepts. The research allowed for the development of assertions based on …
