A Selective Study Of The Art Songs Of Franz Lehár, Amy Nielsen

Dissertations

Though best known for his operetta output, German composer Franz Lehár (1870-1948) wrote over one hundred lieder, including at least six cycles. This is the first formal study available on the art songs of Franz Lehár. The opening chapter provides a short biography. Subsequent chapters seek to provide specific musical cues and idioms to describe Lehár’s musical style, along with insights into his compositional technique and musical aesthetic as they are employed in his art songs. Chapter III begins with an overview of the historical importance of Franz Lehár, including a brief discussion of the musical trends and composers of …

The Influence Of Minimalist Compositional Techniques On Literature For Wind Ensemble, Justin Thomas Zanchuk Dec 2018

The Influence Of Minimalist Compositional Techniques On Literature For Wind Ensemble, Justin Thomas Zanchuk

Dissertations

There is an abundance of literature that has been and is currently being written for the wind ensemble that is influenced by the compositional techniques utilized in minimalism, one of the most significant musical styles of the late twentieth-century, and is associated with the music of LaMonte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams, and Michael Torke. This influence has expanded the vocabulary of the expressive musical language of the wind ensemble in regards to musical elements such as form and process, melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, and sound. By identifying minimalist compositional characteristics, as well as examining the …

A Comparison Of Saxophone Mouthpieces Using Fourier Analysis To Quantify Perceived Timbre, Mark Robert Pipes Dec 2018

A Comparison Of Saxophone Mouthpieces Using Fourier Analysis To Quantify Perceived Timbre, Mark Robert Pipes

Dissertations

The saxophone mouthpiece significantly contributes to the overall timbre of the instrument. Specialized mouthpiece designs employ combinations of chamber shape, facing dimensions, and material to create a potential sound and response for the performer. Also, manufacturers claim that ligatures affect tonal brightness. However, there is a lack of scientific data reflecting the impact of the claimed tonal characteristics of the specified designs on timbre. With the advent of the smartphone application, the spectrum analysis (also known as impedance spectra) resulting from a Fourier Transform has recently become available to a mass audience. This technology is being investigated to quantify timbre …

A Study Of Prominent African-American Orchestral Trumpet Players From 1970 To 2018, Demarr Ray Woods Aug 2018

A Study Of Prominent African-American Orchestral Trumpet Players From 1970 To 2018, Demarr Ray Woods

Dissertations

Classically-trained African-American musicians often experience the world of professional music differently from their peers in American orchestras. This dissertation explores the African-American experience through case studies based on interviews with five prominent orchestral trumpet players, all performers at the peak of their careers between 1970 and 2018. Subjects discussed not only the racial issues affecting their education, employment, and professional lives, but also offered insights regarding music preparation, stress management, and their place in a world where they are overwhelmingly outnumbered. While the primary goal of this study is to shine a light on racism within classical music, it also …

Dissertations

Spanish secular songs from the 1460s to 1550s, represented by the forms of romances, villancicos, and cancíones, are found in cancióneros, or songbooks, and published collections for vihuela and solo voice. Organized according to narrative categories and chronology, the songs reflect events before, during, and after the reconquista and portray Moors and Christians from the reign of Isabel and Fernando to beyond the First Morisco Rebellion. Many songs in the cancióneros are anonymous or by little known composers, although seven pieces by Juan del Encina are included. Grant Green: An Analysis Of The Blue Note Guitarist’S Musical Vocabulary, Teague Stefan Bechtel May 2018

Grant Green: An Analysis Of The Blue Note Guitarist’S Musical Vocabulary, Teague Stefan Bechtel

Dissertations

This study examines the musical vocabulary of Blue Note Records guitarist Grant Green. By analyzing transcribed solos recorded between the years 1961 to 1965, this study seeks to establish a consensus of rhythmic and harmonic vocabulary that can be attributed to the jazz guitarist. Green’s harmonic vocabulary has been discussed in relation to elements outlined in the Jerry Coker book, “Elements of the Jazz Language for the Developing Improviser.” Elements of rhythmic vocabulary, time feel, phrasing, and sound concept have been discussed as stand-alone subjects. Sections are addressed with a foundation of theoretical and historical context, as well as with …

Concerto For Jazz Trombone And Wind Ensemble, Michael Joseph Conrad May 2018

Concerto For Jazz Trombone And Wind Ensemble, Michael Joseph Conrad

Dissertations

Concerto for Jazz Trombone and Wind Ensemble is an original piece that incorporates distinct elements of jazz music within a largely classical framework. The analysis presented examines the role of improvisation, the use of blues tonality, and the incorporation of quintessential jazz harmonies throughout the work. My research explores the way in which these jazz elements operate in the context of a prototypical concerto format with a wind ensemble instrumentation and classical forms. The compositional devices and musical components of each section are examined in great detail, from the motivic unity of the first movement to the blending of blues …

Hand And Wrist Overuse Injuries In Flutists: Physical Causes And Prevention, Xin Jing May 2018

Hand And Wrist Overuse Injuries In Flutists: Physical Causes And Prevention, Xin Jing

Dissertations

In music, overuse injury is a common problem that is insufficiently addressed by many instrumentalists. Research has shown a significant number of flutists have suffered from overuse-related injuries. If flutists become cognizant of the anatomy, alignment, and function in their fingers, hands, and wrists, they will recognize how practicing wisely can prevent injuries. By incorporating informed, preventative measures into practice routines, the need for treatment is unnecessary or minimized. However, in current literature, there is a lack of research pertaining to physical causes and prevention of overuse injuries for this population and this issue. In this dissertation, the author delves …

An Analysis Of Beginning Percussion Education Through Wind Band Repertoire And Method Books, Christopher Evan Wilson May 2018

An Analysis Of Beginning Percussion Education Through Wind Band Repertoire And Method Books, Christopher Evan Wilson

Dissertations

The challenges of studying percussion at an early age are numerous, as students must navigate a multitude of techniques on different instruments. Given these challenges, coupled with potentially substandard percussion training for band directors and issues of exposure in the classroom, it is common for the student percussionist to acquire considerable weaknesses, even at a young age. However, with the correct guidance through educational materials, all beginning percussionists have the opportunity to develop into well-rounded musicians. This study aimed to define what instruments and technical concepts have been overlooked in the pedagogy of beginning percussionists. Included in this document are …

Edward Elgar’S The Music Makers: A Choral Conductor’S Analysis And Score Preparation Guide, David Klement

Dissertations

Edward Elgar’s The Music Makers, op 69, a cantata for full choir, mezzo-soprano soloist and orchestra, was debuted and conducted by the composer on October 1, 1912 at the Birmingham Festival in England. Based on the now familiar poem by late nineteenth-century English pre-Raphaelite poet Arthur O’Shaughnessy (1844-1881), and beginning with the phrase “We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams”, the work is considered by some historians to be a personal requiem by the composer. Written at Elgar’s peak of compositional creativity, this extended, almost forty-minute cantata, is a choral work of deep personal meaning …
