"Who Will Teach The Poor Little Ones To Say Their Prayers?" Catholics, Protestant, And Black Education In Reconstruction Era St. Augustine, Florida., Justin Stuart

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 1968, the doors of St. Benedict the Moor’s school in St. Augustine, Florida, closed after nearly seventy years of service to members of the city’s African American community. But St. Benedict’s school represented a long tradition of black Catholic education in St. Augustine. Under Spanish rule, a boy’s school existed that offered equal education to blacks and whites. Florida’s possession by the United States complicated matters as territorial and state laws ended black education in the city, and the Catholic Church chose to side with the South over the issue of slavery in the United States. With the town’s …

Deaf Voice And The Invention Of Community Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent May 2013

Deaf Voice And The Invention Of Community Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Journal of Interpretation

This article poses the existence of a relational model of interpreting that is already rooted in culturally Deaf ways of using evolved interpreters for intercultural communication. Deaf criticism of professional interpreters directs attention to the history of simultaneous interpretation and its origins at the Nuremberg trials. The birth of professional spoken language simultaneous interpretation occurred as a result of new technology used in a new situation. In that setting, the role space of the interpreter was created and confined within a language regime based on unquestioned and therefore non-negotiable values.

The Deaf voice has been raised in protest against some …

Sinn Fein Without The Ira: Legitimacy Or Loss Of Popular Support, Catherine Hueckel Jan 2007

Sinn Fein Without The Ira: Legitimacy Or Loss Of Popular Support, Catherine Hueckel

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Sinn Fein originally came into political prominence in Northern Ireland as the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), yet in the last decade Sinn Fein has become recognized as a legitimate political party. As Sinn Fein joined the mainstream political process, however, the Unionists, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and even Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern questioned its continued affiliation with the IRA and demanded the IRA and Republicans resort to entirely peaceful, democratic means to their political ends. In July 2005, the IRA acceded to this demand, “formally order[ing] an end to the armed campaign” and instructing …

Digital Repertoires: Non-State Actors And Icts, Christopher J. Cox Jan 2006

Digital Repertoires: Non-State Actors And Icts, Christopher J. Cox

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In this paper we explore the usage of information communication technologies (ICTs) in the proliferation of non-state political violence, and governmental countermeasures to thwart such actions. We are specifically interested in gauging how communication technologies are being adapted to provide such non-state with new terrorist repertoires. To explore this issue, we utilize personal interviews with members of the U.S. government and members of Washington’s IT security community.

“Temporary Gentlemen” On The Western Front: Class Consciousness And The British Army Officer, 1914-1918, Laura Root Jan 2006

“Temporary Gentlemen” On The Western Front: Class Consciousness And The British Army Officer, 1914-1918, Laura Root

All Volumes (2001-2008)

A careful evaluation of diaries and memoirs of British temporary officers in World War I suggests that the class consciousness and Regular Army ideals inculcated during training had little bearing on officers’ actual experiences on the front lines. Their accounts confirm previous scholars’ conclusions about the presence of class feelings among officers, but the value they place on military effectiveness in the trenches is much more significant. After 1914, high casualty rates among junior officers forced the British army to seek candidates for commissions from social classes that, before the war, would not have been considered officer material. Accounts from …
