A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught Dec 1974

A Study Of The Ontology Of Evil In The Educational Philosophy Of Martin Buber, Laud Oswald Vaught

Theses and Dissertations

Martin Buber preferred to be known as a philosophical anthropologist rather than a philosopher, theologian, or teacher. Any of these titles are properly used since the scope of his writings contribute significantly to each of these fields.

It is the purpose of this paper to show that what he had to say concerning the Ontology of Evil is significant in the study of educational theory and that his own educational philosophy was influenced by his presuppositions concerning the nature of evil.

Chapter II is devoted to the literature relating to the basic elements of this study: the problem of evil, …

Ecology Of Sago Pondweed (Potamogeton Pectinatus L.) Communities, Alden L. Kollman

Theses and Dissertations

Potamogeton pectinatus L., a submerged, marl forming macrophyte, grows as a natural monospecies community in Fox Lake, 16 km northeast of Devils Lake, North Dakota. The water, sediment, dissolved oxygen, temperature and productivity relationships were studied in this small (0.4 X 1.2 km), shallow (60-75 cm) lake. Five replicate samples of the macrophyte, sediment, water and dissolved oxygen were taken at two week intervals during the 1972 growing season. In August of 1973, seven P. pectinatus sites in North Dakota, from the Minnesota to the Montana borders, were sampled. The sediments were analyzed for pH (7.8), electrical conductivity (9.8 Mmhos/cm), …

Subordinating And Coordinating Particles In Lakhota, Wolfgang Corduan Dec 1974

Subordinating And Coordinating Particles In Lakhota, Wolfgang Corduan

Theses and Dissertations

In her Dakota Texts Ella Deloria appears to be using cha and chanke interchangeably. The goal of this paper is to show that the difference lies in the realm of subordination. For this purpose other languages have been examined to detect how subordination is marked in them. Both German and English are shown to mark subordinate clauses overtly, but Lakhota markers are not so apparent. Subordination is formally defined in a Generative Semantic framework and pertinent works on Lakhota grammar are reviewed. The solution implied by Boas and Deloria that cha is a subordinator is accepted and proven to be …

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of twenty-five μg of histone from the various organs was carried out. The F1, F3, F2a2 plus F2b and F2a1 components were separated into distinct bands and the relative percent of the various bands on the gels were determined by scanning the gels through a densitometer. The relative distribution of the histone components from the various organs was compared. It was found that there was no significant difference in the distribution …

Development And Characterization Of A Model Latent Herpes Simplex Virus Infection In Cultured Cells, James Varani Dec 1974

Development And Characterization Of A Model Latent Herpes Simplex Virus Infection In Cultured Cells, James Varani

Theses and Dissertations

Herpes simplex virus is the classic example of a virus which persists indefinitely in the host following the initial infection. Recurrent episodes of active virus growth characterize the infection in some individuals . In addition to the periodic flair-ups of active virus growth, the persistence of virus may be expressed in a more subtle way. It is possible that one or more types of human cancer result from the persistence of this virus in the host.

The exact mechanism by which the virus is maintained in the host between outbreaks of active growth is not known. It is usually not …

Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter Dec 1974

Kenneth Patchen Picture-Poems, Laurel J. Reuter

Theses and Dissertations

The problem was to present an exhibition of the works of Kenneth Patchen to the University of North Dakota community; to augment the exhibition with a published catalog which would give the uninitiated viewer a sense of Patchen's place in both literature and the visual arts; to accompany the catalog, in thesis form, with a critical article about Patchen’s work.

The procedure involved the following steps: (1) A compilation of a Patchen bibliography. (2) A week in California with Mrs. Patchen during which time I surveyed the artist's entire output of picture-poems and, based upon my critical judgment of the …

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness Dec 1974

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness

Theses and Dissertations

One rather consistent finding from studies involving field dependence-independence is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that socialization factors and sex-role identification relate to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a part in the development of individual differences in field dependency, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependency. The present study attempts to assess the effect of attitudes favoring traditional roles for women vs. more liberal …

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson Dec 1974

Behavioral Effects Of Postnatal Zinc Deficiency And Kryptopyrrole In The Rat, Peter C. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Zinc deficiency has been shown to have a wide range of behavioral effects in the rat. The experiments presented below were conducted to determine the effects of postnatal zinc deficiency (birth-21 days) on avoidance learning and on measures of emotionality. Kryptopyrrole, a substance which has been shown to produce "catatonic" freezing behavior and atypical electrical activity in rat brains, was administered to half of the Ss to study possible zinc deficiency-kryptopyrrole interactions.

Dams were made zinc deficient from the day of delivery until day 21 on a diet contaning less than 1 ppm zinc. Two dietary control groups were used: …

Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh Dec 1974

Personality Dimensions Of Drinking Patterns In Hospitalized Male Alcoholics, Donald J. Mccullagh

Theses and Dissertations

Research concerning alcoholism and personality has often been based upon the single syndrome concept of alcoholism. At the theoretical level it has been recognized that different personality patterns exist among alcoholics. However, few researchers have addressed themselves to this area. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship existed between alcoholic drinking patterns and alcoholism severity based on the responses to the Alcohol Use Questionnaire and personality traits as measured by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire.

The sample consisted of 101 white males admitted to a midwestern alcoholism treatment center during a three month period in 1974. …

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani Dec 1974

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani

Theses and Dissertations

An alternate method to the conventional filtration for separation of mineral matter from dissolved lignite was investigated. Separation was accomplished by the introduction of an organic diluent mixed with the solid-liquid product from hydrogenation-solubilization of lignite and decanted at elevated temperatures and pressures. This method gave separation as high as 88 percent recovery of solvent refined lignite (SRL). The SRL contained ash as low as 0.70 percent versus 0.1 to 0.6 percent ash obtained by filtration methods.

The technique investigated is analogous to methods used in the deasphalting of petroleum residuum employed in the petroleum industry. The introduction of the …

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill Aug 1974

The Treatment Of Anxiety In The Physically Disabled By Three Different Variations Of Systematic Desensitization, Robert H. O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Systematic desensitization has become a major technique for the direct removal of maladaptive anxiety. The basic method consists of pairing progressive muscle relaxation with the imagination of anxiety producing scenes. The scenes are arranged in a hierarchy with those scenes at the top eliciting little or no anxiety and those scenes at the bottom eliciting a great deal of anxiety. It has been hypothesized that the process of progressive muscle relaxation inhibits the development of anxiety in the presence of anxiety evoking stimuli and weakens the bond between those stimuli and the anxiety. Recently, several investigators have, suggested that any …
