Theses and Dissertations

The Problem

This study had as its purpose the review and analysis of nine Models for elementary teacher education. These Models were Phase I of a USOE Elementary Teacher Education Project. Considerations for preliminary analysis for this study were to determine:

  1. 1. What were the Models' conceptions of a teacher?
  2. 2. What program content and curriculum strategies were proposed for preparing a teacher of this description?
  3. 3. In what ways did the Models provide for matching of training procedures with student character?
  4. 4. How did the Models accept the challenge of relating teacher education with the field?
  5. 5. To what …

The Relationship Of The Self-Concept And The Reflected Ideal Self To Various Components Of Friendship, Dennis L. Johnson Dec 1971

The Relationship Of The Self-Concept And The Reflected Ideal Self To Various Components Of Friendship, Dennis L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was designed to examine some of the rela tionships between self-concepts, evaluations by others, and friendship. It was hypothesized that a person who is seen by a second person similarly to the way the first person would like to see himself will be more likely to form friendships with the second person, and more likely to see him as ego supportive than when such similarity does not exist. It was also predicted that people who see themselves as being quite different from the way they would like to be (unfavorable self-concepts) will be more likely to be involved …

The Influence Of Curiosity On Intentional And Incidental Learning, Richard L. Metzger Dec 1971

The Influence Of Curiosity On Intentional And Incidental Learning, Richard L. Metzger

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has indicated that the level of curiosity of an individual is related to the amount of information which that individual can acquire incidentally. The present study was conducted to test two hypotheses: (a) High curiosity children will learn more material incidentally than low curiosity children, and (b) the level of curiosity will effect intentional learning.

Twenty-eight fifth grade students (14 high curious, 14 low) were selected as subjects from a pool of 77 on the basis of scores attained on the Penney and McCann (1964) Children’s Reactive Curiosity Scale. The intentional learning task was a paired-associate presentation of …

Cross Educaiton Effect Of Delorme Progressive Resistance Exercise On Quadriceps Femoris, Thomas E. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

This project was conducted in order to determine if strengthening the knee extensors of one leg using dynamic contractions would result in an increase in the knee extensors of the opposite (contralateral) leg.

The experiment consisted of a. pretest to determine the maximum amount of weight that could be lifted by each leg for all subjects. The preferred leg of each subject was then subjected to a five-week progressive resistance exercise program conducted on a daily basis. A post-test was then given in a similar manner to the pretest.

The participants were fourteen University of North Dakota Junior Physical Therapy …

A Multidimensional Scaling Approach To Interperson Similarity And Attraction, Brenda Gryting Heltne Dec 1971

A Multidimensional Scaling Approach To Interperson Similarity And Attraction, Brenda Gryting Heltne

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this investigation was to determine what judgment strategies are actually employed when judging the similarity of individuals, and the relationship of similarity estimates to a rated attraction index. The Stone-Coles (1970) multidimensional scaling technique was utilized. The input was based on the estimates of interperson similarity made by 16 pledges of a sorority. Each pledge also ranked the attractiveness of the other 15 pledges.

The four factor-dimensions which emerged from the judgmental data, similarity estimates, were interpreted as "dating conservatism-liberalism," "sociability," "non-dependability-dependability," and "dominance-submission". Only the "sociability" and "dominance-submission" dimensions were found to be linearly related to …

Analysis Of The Election Of 1896 In North Dakota, Roger Milton Klimpel Aug 1971

Analysis Of The Election Of 1896 In North Dakota, Roger Milton Klimpel

Theses and Dissertations

The treatment of the election of 1896 has invoked no uniform opinion among historians. The general works as well as the more localized studies have centered around urban-rural differences, voting i patterns, and issues. This study follows the course of political events in North Dakota's election of 1896, through the use of newspapers, public documents, and contemporary writings.

Fusion elements failed in their attempts to wrestle the government away from Republicans. Democratic-Populist forces faced a well- entrenched, well-organized and well-financed Republican party. Fusionists centered their campaign on the narrow silver issue. The Republicans circumvented the money question and successfully played …

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam Aug 1971

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam

Theses and Dissertations

In general, high school choruses do not reach their potential as far as choral tone is concerned. The tone is generally characterized by either a completely undisciplined and labored sound or a pseudo "mature" sound imposed upon the students by a director seeking to emulate his college choir.

When high school choruses sing freely and naturally, they do so because they are taught and inspired to do so by their director. Therefore, the director must understand the concepts of correct singing and must have in his possession practical techniques that will develop a program of correct singing in the high …

Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling Aug 1971

Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling

Theses and Dissertations

Conditioned suppression describes the attenuation of an ongoing operant (e.g., lever press or key peck) when a warning stimulus precedes unavoidable electric shock. First reported by Estes and Skinner (1941), the procedure has been refined by Kamin (1961, 1965) and other investigators (Geller, 1963, 1964; Hunt and Brady, 1955; and James and Mostoway, 1968). Although many of the parameters of conditioned suppression have been evaluated, relatively little attention has been given to interstimulus intervals. In the only parametric study of interstimulus intervals, Libby (1951) investigated seven short intervals ranging from 0 to 30 seconds. He reported that suppression increased as …

Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr. Aug 1971

Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Study of the factors influencing the occurrence of aggression received impetus from the frustration-aggression hypothesis of 1939. It was hypothesized that aggression was the primary consequence of frustration, and that the stronger the frustration, the stronger the aggression. Numerous studies have shown that frustration can lead to aggression v/ith organisms ranging along the phylogenetic scale from rats to humans. While questionnaire studies have shown that the strength of aggression varies v/ith the strength of frustration, this has not been verified in laboratory studies of direct physical aggression.

Recently, the importance of situational variables, such as the perceived arbitrariness of the …
