Advanced Applications Of Cosmic-Ray Muon Radiography, John Perry Sep 2013

Advanced Applications Of Cosmic-Ray Muon Radiography, John Perry

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The passage of cosmic-ray muons through matter is dominated by the Coulomb interaction with electrons and atomic nuclei. The muons interaction with electrons leads to continuous energy loss and stopping through the process of ionization. The muon's interaction with nuclei leads to angular diffusion. If a muon stops in matter, other processes unfold, as discussed in more detail below. These interactions provide the basis for advanced applications of cosmic-ray muon radiography discussed here, specifically: 1) imaging a nuclear reactor with near horizontal muons, and 2) identifying materials through the analysis of radiation lengths weighted by density and secondary signals that …

Mobile, Hybrid Compton/Coded Aperture Imaging For Detection, Identification And Localization Of Gamma-Ray Sources At Stand-Off Distances, Shawn Tornga Jul 2013

Mobile, Hybrid Compton/Coded Aperture Imaging For Detection, Identification And Localization Of Gamma-Ray Sources At Stand-Off Distances, Shawn Tornga

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The Stand-off radiation detection system (SORDS) program is an advanced technology demonstration (ATD) project through the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) with the goal of detection, identification and localization of weak radiological sources in the presence of large dynamic backgrounds. The Raytheon-Tri-Modal Imager (TMI) is a mobile truck-based, hybrid gamma-ray spectroscopic and imaging system able to quickly detect, identify and localize, radiation sources at standoff distances through improved sensitivity provided by multiple detection modes while minimizing the false alarm rate. Reconstruction of gamma-ray sources is performed using a combination of gamma-ray spectroscopy and two imaging modalities; coded aperture and Compton …

Multifunctional Iron Platinum Stealth Immunomicelles : Targeted Imaging And Therapy Of Prostate Cancer., Robert Taylor May 2012

Multifunctional Iron Platinum Stealth Immunomicelles : Targeted Imaging And Therapy Of Prostate Cancer., Robert Taylor

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

In the United States, prostate cancer is the second most common reason for cancer death in men. No imaging methods currently exist which are specific for detecting, imaging, and treating extracapsular or metastatic prostate cancer. The goal of this research was to develop novel nanoparticles that would specifically target human prostate cancer cells and simultaneously deliver a chemotherapeutic agent and superior magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent to the prostate cancer cells for both therapy and MRI detection. This dissertation describes the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of superparamagnetic iron-platinum nanoparticles (SIPPs) and their subsequent encapsulation with the drug Paclitaxel, using …
