Characterization Of Fluvial Facies Distributions And Cyclicity Using Terrestrial Lidar: Paleocene Nacimiento Formation, Kutz Canyon, New Mexico, Jeffrey Carritt Dec 2014

Characterization Of Fluvial Facies Distributions And Cyclicity Using Terrestrial Lidar: Paleocene Nacimiento Formation, Kutz Canyon, New Mexico, Jeffrey Carritt

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The fluvial deposits of the early Paleocene Nacimiento Formation are comprised of variegrated mudstones with interbedded paleosols and channel sandstone bodies. This study documents these strata in a ~1 km2 outcrop area at Kutz Canyon, San Juan Basin, New Mexico, by employing fully georeferenced lidar intensity data collected from a terrestrial lidar scanner and an outcrop surface model constructed from the lidar data and calibrated digital field photographs. At this location, the lidar intensity data are responsive to lithology and distinct lidar facies are identified which correspond to facies types described in measured stratigraphic sections. One dimensional lidar intensity logs …

Crime And Immigration In Albuquerque, Nm — Real Or Misperception?, Saundra D. Daras Sep 2014

Crime And Immigration In Albuquerque, Nm — Real Or Misperception?, Saundra D. Daras

Geography ETDs

The decade between 2000 and 2010 marked the largest increase of immigrant populations in U.S. history, however crime rates have seen a decrease during this same period. Recent research suggests that immigrant groups may actually be associated with this phenomenon. As immigration rates are expected to continue to grow in Albuquerque and the U.S., further research into the relationship between immigration and crime rates within historical destination cities (i.e. Los Angeles, New York) and new destination gateway cities, such as Albuquerque, is necessary. This study examines how violent and non-violent crime rates in immigrant neighborhoods compare to those of non-immigrant …

Modeling Early-Career Teacher Retention In New Mexico Using Logistic Regression, Rachel Mercer-Smith Sep 2014

Modeling Early-Career Teacher Retention In New Mexico Using Logistic Regression, Rachel Mercer-Smith

Public Administration ETDs

Teachers are the single-greatest predictor of student achievement, and teacher effectiveness tends to improve with experience. Yet, roughly half of all new teachers leave the profession within five years of beginning their careers, leading to school instability, affecting student achievement, and wasting the public investment made in their professional development. This student examined a cohort of New Mexico public school teachers who began their careers in 2008 and analyzed the individual, school, and community factors that predicted their retention within the states teacher workforce in 2013 using logistic regression analysis. The study found that holding an alternative license consistently makes …

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac Jul 2014

Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac

Geography ETDs

This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

Eva'lution In Fandangos, Fiestas, And Flamenco: Adding To The Repertoire Of Chicano Expressive Arts, Trisha Martinez

American Studies ETDs

This study seeks to explain this curious and unknown connection of Albuquerque flamenco to Eva Encinias-Sandoval and the dance traditions of Nuevomexicanos. I seek to identify the history and social impact of this rich and distinct New Mexico flamenco tradition by tracing the development of Encinias-Sandoval's career and the establishment of her now world-class flamenco arts program, offered through the University of New Mexico's Dance and Theatre Department, as well as thorough affiliates and organizations of the National Institute of Flamenco. More specifically, my thesis describes how Eva Encinias-Sandoval built and continues to anchor this inspiring expressive art form in …

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy Jul 2014

The Un-Exceptional Bomb: Settler Nuclearism, Feminism, And Atomic Tourism In New Mexico, Eileen Clare Shaughnessy

American Studies ETDs

New Mexico's atomic tourism acts to render the atomic bomb simultaneously so exceptional that it is viewed as the pinnacle of Western intelligence, and yet also so un-exceptional that it is banal, as typified by kitschy atomic souvenirs. A primary way in which New Mexico's atomic tourist sites accomplish this paradoxical narrative is through gendered and racialized discourses in exhibits, gift shops, and on-site narratives. The racialized trope of the "vanishing Native" functions in these spaces to shore up the colonialist progress narrative in which white Western science and Manifest Destiny inevitably result in the creation of the "exceptional" bomb …

Water Resources Impacts Of Uranium Mining In The San Juan Basin, New Mexico, Kent Steinhaus Jul 2014

Water Resources Impacts Of Uranium Mining In The San Juan Basin, New Mexico, Kent Steinhaus

Civil Engineering ETDs

The objective of this research was to improve understanding of the groundwater impacts of uranium mining in the San Juan Basin by estimating the volumetric amount of water removed from the underlying Westwater Canyon member aquifer. This was achieved by modeling a conceptual mine that is based on the physical characteristics present near the proposed Roca Honda Mine near Grants, New Mexico. An analysis of the uncertainty of the physical, situational, and model parameters and their associated sensitivities was conducted so that an understanding of potential groundwater withdrawals for uranium mining could be gathered. Uranium mining in the San Juan …

No Admission Required: Sovereignty, Slots And Native American Art, Jane Sinclair Jul 2014

No Admission Required: Sovereignty, Slots And Native American Art, Jane Sinclair

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines how Native American art is displayed in Indian casinos in the Southwest. Exhibition strategies, employed by traditional art and natural history museums offer points of comparison. An overview of legal battles leading up to and following the passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) in 1988 is provided. While New Mexico is the primary focus of this discussion, the state of Arizona is also mentioned. The evolution of gaming compacts in New Mexico is detailed at length. Increasing The Supply Of Affordable Housing: Expanding Affordable Housing Policy In Albuquerque, Nm., Erin Callahan Jul 2014

Increasing The Supply Of Affordable Housing: Expanding Affordable Housing Policy In Albuquerque, Nm., Erin Callahan

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Providing affordable housing in the United States involves coordination between the federal, state, and local levels of government. Local jurisdictions must ensure that all requirements are met in order to receive funding. In Albuquerque, NM, this includes the production of a Consolidated Plan to satisfy federal requirements, and an Affordable Housing Plan to satisfy state requirements. However, even when the requirements are satisfied, the amount of funding available is never enough to create enough housing to meet the needs of the population. The objective of this study is to show how the supply of affordable housing in Albuquerque can be …

Women And Cultural Production: Fiestas, Families, And Foodways In San Rafael, New Mexico, Stephanie M. Sanchez

Anthropology ETDs

Historically, New Mexico scholars and folklorists have often omitted womens roles in Hispanic cultural production and heritage maintenance. However, women make significant contributions to the retention, transmission, and adaptation of traditional Hispanic practices. In this dissertation, I examine how particular Hispanic women, who I refer to as 'center women' (Brodkin Sacks 1988), from a small village named San Rafael, New Mexico mobilize their families and other community members in order to successfully perform traditional New Mexican events such as the annual fiesta in honor of the local patron saint, Las Posadas, a Christmas time novena, and Good Friday commemorations. These …

Military Frame, Mission Form, Historic Fabric, And Campus Function: A New Mexico National Guard Perspective, Erin Montoya

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis will investigate, identify, and develop what campus planning is for military installations; more specifically it will classify specific features that should be included in the planning of military installations to achieve a campus setting. This thesis will include a case study upon which the campus initiative can be exemplified using a National Guard site. The site selected is dynamic enough to include the majority of components within the planning spectrum of regulations for Army National Guard facilities. This all-volunteer component is the pride of America with multi-faceted missions and capabilities that do not match any other component or …

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon Feb 2014

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Thousands of Americans enter postsecondary institutions every year and many are under-prepared for college-level work. Subsequently, students enroll in or are placed in developmental courses in preparation for the rigor of college-level classes. Numerous studies have looked at the impact of developmental course work on student outcomes, but few focus on predictors that could identify students who are likely to need developmental education. The potential for early prediction (and therefore possible intervention) is less understood. This study addresses this gap by examining the connection between high school assessments and subsequent developmental courses enrollment in college. Using longitudinal data from New …
