Chronic pain is a complex condition that can adversely impact all areas of one's life. Despite a wealth of treatment options, complete pain relief is rare. Consequently, treatment goals often aim to improve functioning in physical, psychological, and social domains. Assessments play an important role in planning treatment and monitoring changes in functioning, but must balance comprehensiveness with patient burden. This is a qualitative study of four Muslim parents whose ESL children attend an Islamic private school in the American Southwest. The study investigates the preparedness of these Muslim ESL students to meet the Common Core State Standards-based assessments. The focus of the study is the conceptual processes included in the academic skills embedded in the standards. With this in mind, the study provides a detailed analysis of these conceptual processes and an analysis of the conceptual processes available to these Muslim ESL students in their households and in their Islamic Studies textbooks. First-person reports of perceptions and experiences of test takers is lacking in the literature. All stakeholders add to the understanding of the test. However, the test takers are the only stakeholders who have the experience of preparing for the test, taking the test, and living with the consequences of the test. This interview study reported on the experiences and perceptions of graduate students at one public university in the U.S. who have successfully taken the internet-based TOEFL. Thousands of Americans enter postsecondary institutions every year and many are under-prepared for college-level work. Subsequently, students enroll in or are placed in developmental courses in preparation for the rigor of college-level classes. Numerous studies have looked at the impact of developmental course work on student outcomes, but few focus on predictors that could identify students who are likely to need developmental education. This qualitative interview study examined the classroom assessment knowledge and beliefs of five recent graduates of the University of New Mexico Special Education Dual License Program (SEDLP).
