Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The Phonology of the Spanish of El Prado, New Mexico is a descriptive study of the phonetics and phonemics of the Spanish spoken in the area known as El Prado, just north of Taos, New Mexico. Also, informants were more readily found in El Prado than in Taos itself.

The purpose of this study is to provide and objective description of a spoken Spanish dialect applying the methodology of linguistics to a …

The Synthesis Of 7-Methyl-3,4-Benzpyrene, 6,7-Dimethyl-3,4-Benzpyrene, 10-Methyl-3,4-Benzpyrene And 7,10-Dimethyl-3,4-Benzpyrene, Joseph Leonard Comp Jr.

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Interest in carcinogenic compounds began to develop when a form of cancer was found occurring in chimney sweeps in 1775. Skin cancer was found among workers in tar industries in 1875, and in 1887 workers in cotton spinning industries were known to have cancer which was attributed to contact with lubricating oils. Girls who painted the luminous dials of watches contracted cancer from exposure to the radioactive paint, and men who worked with B-naphthylamine developed bladder cancer. Many other cases of occupational cancer were reported before a systematic study of carcinogenic substances was begun. Early attempts to produce cancer in …

A Comparison Of The Accuracy Of Finite Difference Methods And Variational Methods In The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Robert F. Brodsky Dec 1956

A Comparison Of The Accuracy Of Finite Difference Methods And Variational Methods In The Numerical Solution Of Partial Differential Equations, Robert F. Brodsky

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate some of the numerical methods available to solve partial differential equations intractable to analytic solutions with a view towards: 1. Indicating where particular methods appear most applicable, from the standpoints of accuracy, easy of solution, minimum expenditure of effort; and 2. Indicating the accuracy to be expected in the use of two of the more powerful methods investigated as applied to a problem of elasticity.

Transistors Applied To An Fm-Fm Airborne Radio Telemetery System, R. H. Gablehouse Nov 1956

Transistors Applied To An Fm-Fm Airborne Radio Telemetery System, R. H. Gablehouse

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The two semiconductor elements commonly used in transistor production, silicon and germanium, were discovered by two European chemists. A Swedish chemist, Jons Jakob Berzelius, separated and identified silicon in 1823. Germanium was discovered and named by a German chemist, Clemens Alexander Winkler in 1886.

The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form Aug 1956

The Administration Of Representative Confederate Prisons, George Form

History ETDs

Since neither the North nor the South had faced squarely the likelihood of war until the action at Fort Sumter, it is not surprising that both governments were unprepared for the handling of prisoners until they were actually confronted with the capture of troops. Of necessity, an impromptu and makeshift prison administration had to be devised, and, indeed, the retention of prisoners was not universally accepted as essential so long as it could be avoided. No suitable provisions or advance preparations for the care of war prisoners were undertaken by governments more vitally concerned with the deployment and supply of …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the epic as it appears in Eskimo folklore and to delineate its most prominent characteristics. ... So far as I know, my study is the only one of its kind concerning the Eskimo epic. The evidence I have collected does not support a hypothesis that there is an Eskimo epic in the generic sense of the term ... However, in the body of Eskimo folklore there are tales which some collectors have labeled epic and there are others in unclassified collections which have epic characteristics. These tales are the Eskimo epic as …

The Origin Of Independent Offices And Agencies In The State Of New Mexico, Reginald John Eyre Aug 1956

The Origin Of Independent Offices And Agencies In The State Of New Mexico, Reginald John Eyre

Political Science ETDs

Surprisingly little is known of the origin of the independent offices and agencies of the states. Little effort has been made to analyze and explain the combination of forces and pressures that have resulted in their creation, decided the authority to be given or denied them, and determined the manner in which they were to be filled. This thesis seeks preliminary answers to these questions for the state of New Mexico.

The Public Domain In New Mexico 1854-1891, Victor Westphall May 1956

The Public Domain In New Mexico 1854-1891, Victor Westphall

History ETDs

New Mexico enjoys the use and benefits of the most complete and ingenious system of identifying land areas ever devised by man - the rectangular system of surveying. This system of survey was used in the states of the United States except "six New England States, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas, the United States not being the owner of public lands in any of these political divisions." The economic efficiency of surveying with this system has done much to preclude the possibility of litigation over boundaries as is …

It has, in its short history, attracted considerable attention and interest beyond the borders of New Mexico.

The Loneliness Of Thomas Wolfe: A Note On Form, Keith C. Wilson May 1956

The Loneliness Of Thomas Wolfe: A Note On Form, Keith C. Wilson

English Language and Literature ETDs

To better accomplish my objective--to show form in Wolfe's novels--I have related form to the portrayal of loneliness because loneliness is the central theme of the novels. In other words, I have attempted to show how he modified his style to reflect the mood of loneliness. These modifications are shown in terms of plot structure, plot rhythms, and the resolving forces. Within the resolving forces, I have sub-divided resolution into resolvement by time, philosophical resolvement, and poetical resolvement. The terms used throughout the study are either my own or those of E.M. Forster's book Aspects Of The Novel, and, so …

South dome is located in the southern part of the area near the mouth of the canyon. Thus far the mineral resources of the area have been of little economic value. There are, however, large deposits of commercial uranium deposit at depth which cannot be disregarded.

A Study Of Isotopic Exchange Between Potassium Iodide And Benzyl Iodide. Solvent Effects, Joseph A. Leary May 1956

A Study Of Isotopic Exchange Between Potassium Iodide And Benzyl Iodide. Solvent Effects, Joseph A. Leary

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The kinetics of the isotopic exchange reaction between potassium iodide and benzyl iodide in alcoholic solution has been studied thoroughly by Stillson. It was reported that the reaction was much faster in ethanol-acetone mixtures than in absolute ethanol. However, it was not possible to determine whether this was due to acceleration of the reaction by acetone, or to inhibition by ethanol.

The purpose of this investigation was to elucidate further the effect of various solvents on the same exchange reaction. The isotopic exchange reaction between potassium iodide and p-nitrobenzyl iodide was also studied, because it had been investigated in alcoholic …

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin May 1956

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin

Biology ETDs

Protein is basic to the structure and function of protoplasm. Enzyme systems which regulate the rate of cellular reactions are primarily composed of protein and many of these enzymatic systems influence the metabolism of less specialized proteins that form the major structural material of protoplasm. It is believed that experimental procedures which modify protein composition of cells may also influence the activity of intra-cellular enzymes. In experimental live cancer, it has been shown that the activities of a number of oxidative enzymes are modified as the carcinogenic process proceeds (Richmond, 1955, p.38). Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that endocrine function …
