Empowering Student Wellness: Our Approach At The Health Sciences Library, Varina Kosovich

Health sciences students experience mental health issues, demoralization, and burnout at greater rates compared to other students and often do not report these issues for fear of marginalization. Additionally, many neurodiverse students struggle in higher education due to environments that are not accessible. Considering these information points, authors surveyed space in the library to determine an appropriate area to create and pilot the Wellness Room. Funding was established through an internal grant and a study room was approved for use in the pilot. Resources were provided with autonomous space, feminist ethics of care, and trauma informed care tenets. Feedback from …

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to obtain reliable data about satisfaction with and value of services and resources to users at a health sciences library using the Measuring Information Service Outcomes (MISO) Survey.
METHODS: The study team evaluated multiple survey options including MISO, LibQual, LibStat, and creating an in-house survey. The ITHAKA survey was not considered due to its length and complexity. We selected MISO based on its flexibility/customizability, professional administration, ease of use, previous use of the tool, and historically high response rates. The team significantly customized the survey tool, adding 40 customized or local questions. The …

The Partnering 4 Vaccine Equity (P4VE) initiative in New Mexico (NM) aims to overcome vaccine hesitancy and promote health equity among underserved populations. Four listening sessions were conducted in 2023 by the University of New Mexico Prevention Research Center, Presbyterian Community Health, and community partners to understand vaccine attitudes and message preferences of African American, African immigrant, NM Hispanic/Latinx, and Hispanic/Latinx immigrant communities. The sessions followed a semi-structured discussion guide led by trained trusted messengers and recruited through community-based organizations and social media platforms. Participants shared their experiences and perspectives on COVID-19 and influenza vaccine attitudes, beliefs, and barriers. Participants …

The Human Gut Microbiome, Tammy J. Ladue
The Human Gut Microbiome, Tammy J. Ladue
InterProfessional Education Research and Scholarship
Although the gut microbiome has been known for many years, it wasn’t until the mid-1970’s that a relationship was hypothesized in medical journals. With the advent of the Human Genome Project in 2001 (Adak & Khan, 2019) further investigation into the types and relationship of the microbes in the GI tract were seriously studied.
Utilizing DNA & RNA tracking and culture techniques found during the Genome Project, more information was found on the Gut Microbiome. It was as of 2017 that the knowledge on the Microbiome began to show promise. It has been speculated that the GI tract has approximately …
