The Problem

In a formal organization, what determines who stays in and who drops out? The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that the closer the “fit”, the less likelihood that members will drop out. The concept of “fit” and “non-fit” is not a conception of a simple dichotomy but of degrees and kinds of “fit” and “non-fit.” With this in mind, then, the research in this study is focused on an exploration of sub-cultural variations ; that is, sub-cultures that are more less congruent with a given set of role expectations.
