The Hidden Story Of Online Social Network Graphs, Aisha B Rahman Nov 2022

The Hidden Story Of Online Social Network Graphs, Aisha B Rahman

Shared Knowledge Conference

Nowadays it is very difficult to find a person that is not connected to any sort of online social network, especially after experiencing the terrifying impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and being stuck at home, people became more dependent on social media to consolidate themselves. One of the COVID-19 pandemic's most lasting effects is an upsurge in social media usage. Online social networks make it easier to connect with others and find those who share common interests. But the dark sides of social networks are also out there. Catfishing is what my study focuses on. Catfishing is the practice of …

"Waaay Beyond Words": Using Voice And Gestures To Catapult Communication, David Páez

Shared Knowledge Conference

"Mmmuuuchísimos años atrás" (mmmaaany years ago). That is what a Colombian speaker would say when describing an event that occurred a long time ago. In doing so, they simulate throwing an imaginary object (like a paper plane), pushing their hands far away from the body. At the same time, they will extend the duration of the words and rise and drop intonation and speaking rate, simulating the sound of throwing that object. This combination of multiple "modalities" of expression (speech sounds and gestures) that resemble the concepts they are conveying is called Multimodal Iconic Expressions (MMIEs). These MMIEs tend to …

Living Roots: Indigenous Agave And Mezcal Cultures, Marsella Macias Nov 2022

Living Roots: Indigenous Agave And Mezcal Cultures, Marsella Macias

Shared Knowledge Conference

"Mezcal is a liquid representation of indigenous culture throughout México." I will never forget my mentor's words when I attended a mezcal tasting he curated in 2015. I had been working with destilados de agave since 2009, before mezcal boomed into the global market, yet I hadn't been able to pin-point what set mezcal uniquely apart from other distillates I worked with throughout my career. It wasn't until I heard his definition that it hit me - mezcal is cultural essence in a bottle. Before journeying profitably across international borders, mezcal traditionally remained in México being sold amongst pueblos and …

Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor Nov 2022

Assessing The Effects Of Climate Change On Piñon Pine And Its Associated Fungi, Matthew Taylor

Shared Knowledge Conference

Precipitation patterns are a well understood driver of biological processes across the globe, with the frequency and amount determining where, when, and how plants and other organisms grow and interact. Weather patterns, however, are becoming unpredictable, as climate change is driving an increase in extreme events, such as drought. The importance of rainfall is no more apparent than in global drylands. One critical and widespread ecosystem type, covering 18 million hectares of land throughout the Southwestern U.S., is piñon-juniper (P-J) woodlands. Pinus edulis (piñon pine) is a dominant tree species in P-J woodlands and is both ecologically and culturally important …

Going Back To Nature For Finding New Antibiotic To Fight Against The Mutated Bacteria (The Superbug), Md Rafiqul Islam Rupam

Shared Knowledge Conference

Living a healthy life is a well-desired thing for all human beings. But sometimes our health is affected by the pathogen specially by the bacteria and we get sick. In the event of sickness, we need medicine that can fight against pathogens and make our life back on the track that we always desire. Medicine, to be specific antibiotics has a great role in the treatment of diseases that are caused by bacteria. Right now, antibiotics are getting registrant due to the bacteria's own ability to mutate by itself. The antibiotic that is effective against the specific bacteria may not …

Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston Nov 2022

Missing Women Within The National Project: A Transnational View Between Mexico And The United States, Megan Tung-Weston

Shared Knowledge Conference

This investigation analyzes the ways in which the disappearances of women in Mexico have been used as a political tool of manipulation and oppression of the Mexican people (in particular, women of Indigenous descent). After the Mexican Revolution of the twentieth century, the country entered the modern era with the arrival of global conflicts and technological developments. This transition also brought about various social changes relating to gender, which were both beneficial and harmful for women and Indigenous populations. The construction of feminine identity-what it means to be a woman, in Mexico, in the twentieth century-and the social creation of …

Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter Nov 2022

Energy Management In Migrating Hummingbirds, Shayne Halter

Shared Knowledge Conference

Hummingbirds are the smallest of migratory birds. Their use of hovering flight to feed on nectar results in prodigious rates of energy consumption. At night, when birds are unable to feed, body fat must be used to stay warm. These characteristics make migratory flights to and from northern breeding areas very expensive. To offset these costs, hummingbirds alternate long flights with stopover periods of refueling along the way. Body fat stores, which may account for as much as 40% of a bird's body weight, also provide a buffer if birds find themselves in a nectar "desert" when the need to …

Aging And Learning: Community Engagement And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Students, Leticia Rinaldi Nov 2022

Aging And Learning: Community Engagement And Self-Efficacy In L2 Teaching To Elderly Students, Leticia Rinaldi

Shared Knowledge Conference

The elderly population (60 years or older) has been increasing in numbers during the past decades around the world and is expected to reach the number of two billion by 2050 (Scult, Haime, et al 2015; Santos, 2019). In Brazil, the aging population numbers are rising more rapidly compared to the global tendency (Alves, 2020). However, the misconception that elderly people are uncapable or incompetent is still part of the imaginary constructed around the aging population (Minichiello and Coulson, 2005). These perceptions shape the access of older population to resources that are accessible to younger sections of society, causing a …

Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services are exploited by critical infrastructures which are strategic for the functioning of the modern society, such as telecom, energy, finance, and transportation. Though the most popular PNT services' provider is the Global Positioning System (GPS), its performance is often impacted by adverse conditions and different varieties of interference, either intentional or unintentional. The potential degradation of the Global Positioning System and other Global Navigation Satellite Systems under several circumstances gives rise to the development of alternative position navigation and timing (PNT) technologies aiming at maintaining efficient and safe operations. Exploiting the efficient and effective …

Model-Free Data-Driven Control For Nonlinear Systems, Aliakbar Ahmadikashani Nov 2022

Model-Free Data-Driven Control For Nonlinear Systems, Aliakbar Ahmadikashani

Shared Knowledge Conference

A complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is hard to model and identify. Due to the diversity of building applications and the coupling of dynamics of the equipment and the building, plant models have significant uncertainty. Black-box modeling of such system e.g. nonlinear autoregressive models, and neural network models can become ill-conditioned, and problematic for control input design. In this research we aim to perform prediction and control based on data for a general nonlinear system subject to constraints. We consider the discrete-time nonlinear state evolution x+ = f (x, u) of the system, where the output y …

Uncanny Is The City: Michael Haneke's Trilogy Of Emotional Glaciation As Anti-Heimat Discourse, Amber Lane Nov 2022

Uncanny Is The City: Michael Haneke's Trilogy Of Emotional Glaciation As Anti-Heimat Discourse, Amber Lane

Shared Knowledge Conference

The Heimatfilm enjoyed great popularity, and was at its peak, in the German-speaking world during the 1950s. The complexity of the concept of Heimat is well-known, evoking feelings of belonging, simplicity, and engagement with non-urban life. My thesis examines Austrian director Michael Haneke's trilogy of emotional glaciation, i.e., the films The Seventh Continent (1989), Benny's Video (1992), and 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance. These three films embody the Heimat concept insofar as uncanny parallels to traditional Heimat films can be identified, but they also contradict it insofar as the films turn tropes of the Heimat film genre on …

Rhizosphere Fungal Assemblages Differentiate By Host Ploidy Level In Mixed-Ploidy Larrea Tridentata Populations, Benjamin Gerstner Nov 2022

Rhizosphere Fungal Assemblages Differentiate By Host Ploidy Level In Mixed-Ploidy Larrea Tridentata Populations, Benjamin Gerstner

Shared Knowledge Conference

Polyploidy-whole genome duplication-is common in plants. Studies over the last several decades have documented numerous mixed-ploidy populations. Whether arising from secondary contact or via whole genome duplication events, the persistence of mixed populations depends on the ability of the minority cytotype to overcome the negative frequency dependent effects of outcrossing with other ploidies, known as Minority Cytotype Exclusion. One mechanism of overcoming Minority Cytotype Exclusion is microbially-mediated niche differentiation (MMND), wherein cytotypes occupy different niches via interactions with different sets of microbes. Inherently cryptic, MMND is underexplored in polyploid plant populations. Here, we search for evidence of MMND in creosotebush …

Rechargeable Al-Co2 Battery Using A Homogeneous Catalyst, Christopher Fetrow

Shared Knowledge Conference

Metal-CO2 batteries have emerged as a promising strategy to improve energy storage technology while capturing/concentrating carbon dioxide. The Al-CO2 battery has been previously as a primary battery to have an excellent discharge capacity when a small amount of oxygen is introduced. Herein we demonstrate an Al-CO2 battery that uses a homogeneous iodine-based redox mediator to enable the reversible discharge and charge of the battery with an ultra-low overpotential of 0.05V. By replacing oxygen gas with aluminum iodide in the electrolyte of the previously primary-only configuration, the battery maintains a high discharge capacity and can be recharged for 12 cycles at …

Throughout the history of colonization and "Native American" (Indigenous) tribes within the U.S have endured the deconstruction of culture, tradition, language, and sacred structures. All of which are part of sharing cultural identity to future generations and the continuance of self-identity for tribes throughout the U.S. This leads to my research question "How can the Navajo Hogan be structurally modified for contemporary living while upholding cultural values, traditions and history it represents?" Starting with one tribe as a beginning of future design knowledge for others. The Navajo Hogan is a sacred dwelling embedded with many stories, cultural teachings, and traditional …

Distribution Of Irrigation Water Creates Barriers To More Efficient Water Use On Middle Rio Grande Farms, Eleanor Hasenbeck Nov 2022

Distribution Of Irrigation Water Creates Barriers To More Efficient Water Use On Middle Rio Grande Farms, Eleanor Hasenbeck

Shared Knowledge Conference

New Mexico's water supply is decreasing under climate change, driven by a decrease in snowpack and resulting runoff and an increase in evaporation under warmer temperatures. Current models predict that in the next 50 years, less water will be available for all water users in the state, which will require community leaders to make difficult decisions to manage a finite water supply. About 80% of New Mexico's total water use is currently used in agriculture, making up the largest water use by sector in the state. For this reason, agriculture is often looked to as an area of opportunity to …

An Examination Of Ingan Micro-Led Carrier Dynamics Through Small Signal Rf Analysis, Elizabeth Dejong Nov 2022

An Examination Of Ingan Micro-Led Carrier Dynamics Through Small Signal Rf Analysis, Elizabeth Dejong

Shared Knowledge Conference

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are by far the most efficient and customizable light source commercially available. While large-area LEDs already have a wide range of uses and represent a massive decrease in energy costs and consumption compared to conventional light sources, applications such as directional lighting, digital displays, and visible light communication would benefit from a reduction in LED source size. Smaller light sources can achieve higher precision directionality, higher display resolution, and faster modulation. Micro-LEDs, usually defined as having a diameter of 50 μm or less, therefore have the potential to further reduce energy consumption and increase functionality. However, micro-LEDs …

Investigating Poly (1,2-Butylene Fumarate) Biopolymer For Applications In Bone Tissue Engineering, Jasmine Jackson

Shared Knowledge Conference

INTRODUCTION: Synthetic biopolymers allow for the creation of bone scaffolds which degrade and may be designed to encourage regeneration of new bone tissue. A common biopolymer for bone tissue engineering poly (propylene-fumarate)(PPF) has been found to have mechanical properties similar to that of native bone; however, former research has suggested its slow degradation rate can pose issues in bone tissue regeneration applications. This research introduces poly (1,2-butylene fumarate)(1,2-PBF) as a potential material for 3D bioprinting of bone tissue scaffolds. METHODS: 1,2-PBF synthesis is done via a polycondensation reaction of fumaryl chloride and 1,2-butanediol using a nitrogen sparging method in which …

Ethics Of International Surrogacy, Himanshi Arora Nov 2022

Ethics Of International Surrogacy, Himanshi Arora

Shared Knowledge Conference

In this poster I intend to explore the ethics of international surrogacy in India. In a developing nation like India, there are different perspectives on surrogacy along with its advantages and drawbacks. Some see it as a win-win situation, by helping women from an impoverished background to earn money for their families and at the same time helping foreign parents get a child to love and care for. On the other hand, some see it as exploitation and abuse, taking advantage of poor women for the benefit of parents from wealthier nations. From 2005-2015, surrogacy clinics were a booming industry …

Since their invention over two decades ago, optical frequency combs have enabled dramatic advances in the way we measure light and time. The utility of these devices follows from their characteristic output of broadband optical frequencies along with their well-timed pulsed output. Optical frequency combs are now used in a multitude of applications including microwave and optical frequency generation, synchronization between state-of-the-art atom-based clocks, as well as atomic and molecular spectroscopy. However, the complexity and scale of optical frequency combs generally limits them to specialized optics laboratories. In response, there has been a significant effort to leverage advances in nano- …

Bye Bye Brasil And A Febre: Race, Change, And National Belonging In Brazil, Laura Cruz Nov 2022

Bye Bye Brasil And A Febre: Race, Change, And National Belonging In Brazil, Laura Cruz

Shared Knowledge Conference

National identity is a concept that permeates every aspect in the formation of a nation. In Brazil, national identity is formed by a varied social landscape of races, ethnicities, and origins. However, in a context of increasing modernization, how do communities that have been forcibly introduced or excluded in the nation view their own national identities? Bye Bye Brasil (1980) and A febre (2019) are two important Brazilian films in which Afro-Brazilian and Native Brazilian characters, respectively, confront the spaces reserved for their communities in their national lived realities. In this project, I examine how Bye Bye Brasil and A …

Policing Through Planning: Safety And Crime And The Zero Fare Program, Hally Bert Nov 2022

Policing Through Planning: Safety And Crime And The Zero Fare Program, Hally Bert

Shared Knowledge Conference

What makes us safe? And who defines what safety is and how do we create it? Policing and planning are racialized. Through a case study of the Zero Fare Program in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I will demonstrate how planning policy that centers white ideals of comfort as safety – with police and transit security as an enforcement measure – produces and reinforces racism and classism. This work offers a discussion and resources that can help push planners’ understanding of safety and crime in their work – especially in the cases that call for collaboration with or increased police, from an …

The Deconstruction Of Heteronormativity And The Presentation Of Eco-Anxiety In Dystopian Novels Written By Women, Lea Briere Nov 2022

The Deconstruction Of Heteronormativity And The Presentation Of Eco-Anxiety In Dystopian Novels Written By Women, Lea Briere

Shared Knowledge Conference

Through an analysis of two modern dystopian novels written by Michelle Tea and Wendy Delorme, I will explore how ecological catastrophes and societal changes are the triggers for the deconstruction of heteronormativity. Following traditions of dystopian narratives, those novels delve into notions of reproduction, nature as an escape, patriarchal expectations, anxiety, and feeling of belonging. Themes such as queer identities, queer relationships, subjectivity, and identity, but also eco-anxiety and solastalgia are also challenged in these texts. My first interest is in the environment and the feeling of belonging of a community and an individual in their habitat. Solastalgia is a …

Polyphonic Spectatorship, Creative Cartography, & Post-Cinematic Refractions In The Age Of Neo-Liberal Travel, Niko Doezema

Shared Knowledge Conference

Today, the most visible and popular form of travel "literature" is the "travel-vlog", an amorphous category which can pertain to any first-person, audio-visual exploration of place. YouTube is awash in travelers from every conceivable place documenting their adventures in every conceivable destination, and their content is disseminated instantaneously and simultaneously through the ever present yet intangible and amorphous conduit of the internet. My thesis consists of a three-fold investigation into the nature of this genre, the first two branches of which are genealogical and diagnostic, the third of which is speculative and potentially transformative. Having established a historical and technological …
