This qualitative study used a transcendental phenomenological approach designed to analyze the in-depth interview responses of ten Hispanic/Latina mothers of preschool-age children, who had been victims of IPV within the last year to examine these effects. Given the researchers desire to better understand the effects of IPV on …

A Differential Item Functioning Analysis Of The New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment, Walter Gilmore

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

English language proficiency assessments are currently in use by the 50 states (Wolf, Farnsworth, & Herman, 2008). Unfortunately, validations studies seldom address the effects of home languages on the use and interpretation of these assessments. If this step is overlooked, the assessment may include items that unfairly position one group of home language scores over another group. An omission of home languages was the case for the New Mexico English Language Proficiency Assessment (NMELPA) (Harcourt Assessment, Inc., 2006, 2007). For this reason, the NMELPA was investigated for group differences between those with first language origins in Spanish and Navajo, the …

Initial Development Of A Medical Information Literacy Questionnaire, Sarah Knox Morley

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

The author constructed a questionnaire of sixty-nine multiple-choice items to assess skills covering five IL domains. Utilizing the Content Validity Ratio …

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon Feb 2014

Can High School Assessments Predict Developmental Education Enrollment In New Mexico?, Tyler Weldon

Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs

Thousands of Americans enter postsecondary institutions every year and many are under-prepared for college-level work. Subsequently, students enroll in or are placed in developmental courses in preparation for the rigor of college-level classes. Numerous studies have looked at the impact of developmental course work on student outcomes, but few focus on predictors that could identify students who are likely to need developmental education. The potential for early prediction (and therefore possible intervention) is less understood. This study addresses this gap by examining the connection between high school assessments and subsequent developmental courses enrollment in college. Using longitudinal data from New …

Counselor education programs aim to provide students with curricula that will enable them as clinicians to effectively engage culturally diverse populations. In contemporary society, it is almost certain that counselors will encounter clients whose cultural background differs from that of their own (Remley & Herlihy, 2010). According to the ACA Code of Ethics (2005) section F.11, counselor educators are expected to actively infuse multicultural and/or diversity competencies into their training and supervision practices. While the ACA Code of Ethics (2005) provides counselor educators with ethical guidelines that are expected to assist its members in constructing a professional course of action, …
