"Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum": Reproduction And Resistance In Octavia Butler, Margaret Atwood, And The Alien Series, Amandine Faucheux

This thesis proposes a comparative study of Octavia E. Butlers Xenogenesis trilogy (1987-89), Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985), and the Alien series (1979-97). I argue that these three texts resist patriarchal oppression upon the female fertile body. I examine how they rewrite and subvert such institutions as motherhood, the family, and the heterosexual couple, in order to redefine and empower woman. In the first chapter, I argue that Octavia Butler rewrites Western origin stories in order to put woman and people of color at its center, which provokes a redefinition of the essential woman. In chapter two, I examine …

Showing The Unsayable: Trauma And Juxtaposition In Persepolis And A Child's Life And Other Stories, Lauranne Poharec

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

This thesis focuses on two comic books by women that interweave personal trauma with the trauma of historical events: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, which explores coming of age against the background of memory of the Iranian Revolution, and A Childs Life and Other Stories by Phoebe Gloeckner, which explores parent-child incest and coming of age in the wake of the American sexual revolution. It argues that Satrapi and Gloeckner, two women comic artists, push the limits of the comics medium and of memoir by using juxtaposition — of alternative illustration styles, of what is seen and what is not seen, …

Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown Sep 2014

Shame In The Fabliaux, Scott Brown

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In this thesis I highlight the literary techniques used in fabliaux to understand the power struggles traversed by the characters. This work focuses on methods of avoiding the shame emasculation in scenes from the fabliaux Berangier au lonc Cul, Du Prestre qui fu mis au lardier, Du Prestre crucefié and De la Saineresse. A fabliau is an amusing short story in poetic form, originally performed by troubadours and trouvères. This form is most present in manuscript examples from the 12th to the 14th century. The stories involve simple characters, word play and idiomatic expressions. I argue that literary mechanisms are …

Augustan Triumphs: Dishonorable Laurels In Ovids Amores And Metamorphoses, Matthew Wilkens Jul 2014

Augustan Triumphs: Dishonorable Laurels In Ovids Amores And Metamorphoses, Matthew Wilkens

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

Over the course of an extraordinary life, Augustus amassed an unprecedented collection of honors and accolades for his service to Rome. The wealth of extant literature during his lifetime offers a rich opportunity to investigate the circumstances in which Augustus flourished. This project analyzes Ovids Amores and Metamophoses to reveal the trajectory of intensifying criticisms aimed at specific accolades attributed to Augustus. My thesis begins with an examination of Book 1 of the Amores and its representations of the triumphal procession in order to trace the foundations of Ovid's nuanced censure of Augustus's honors or 'triumphs'. Then, in chapter 2, …

A Culinary Revolution: The First Celebrity Chef And The Unification Of French Culture, Lindsey Teel

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw tremendous change and social upheaval in France. The monarchy was overthrown because of the French Revolution, a new system of government was being implemented and the country of France was starting to come together as one nation. Many different cultural aspects can be credited, but one in particular was the cuisine. Antonin Carême, the first celebrity chef, embodied Enlightenment ideals and believed that all people regardless of their status should have the ability to eat well. He challenged old cooking methods and techniques and presented France with a new cuisine that would …

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock Feb 2014

Pugilism And Poetry: Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Cravan And The Poète-Boxeur, Austin Hancock

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

The black boxers who fled the United States to Paris in the beginning of the 20th century were a true sensation among the citys avant-garde, and of all the artists and litterateurs gathered around the rings of the Parisian boxing scene, two champions of the poetic world stand out: Guillaume Apollinaire and Arthur Cravan. For these two poets who embraced the fraternal bond which has long existed between pugilist and lyricist, the noble art came to have a unique impact both upon their poetic works and how they defined themselves as poets. By putting these two poetic heavyweights head-to-head, this …
