Pews, Proprietors, And Plutocracy: The Business Model Of Unitarian And Congregational Religious Societies In Northern New England, 1790-1850, Amy Beth Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines Unitarian and Congregational religious societies in northern New England port cities from 1790-1850 and argues that pew proprietorship created a plutocracy, which resulted in the development of a corporate character for Protestant churches and a prioritization of secular over theological concerns. Scholarship on Protestant New England churches during the Early Republic is sorely lacking and historians need a greater understanding of the role proprietors played in church affairs. In the antebellum period, wealthy Protestant elites in Portland, Maine, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Boston, Massachusetts consolidated their power through the purchase of pews, which provided them proportional control …

The Greening Of Faith: God, The Environment, And The Good Life (20th Anniversary Edition), John E. Carroll, Paul Brockelman, Mary Westfall Jan 2016

The Greening Of Faith: God, The Environment, And The Good Life (20th Anniversary Edition), John E. Carroll, Paul Brockelman, Mary Westfall

University of New Hampshire Press: Open Access Books

The recent release of Pope Francis’s much-discussed encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, has reinforced environmental issues as also moral and spiritual issues. This anthology, twenty years ahead of the encyclical but very much in line with its agenda, offers essays by fifteen philosophers, theologians, and environmentalists who argue for a response to ecology that recognizes the tools of science but includes a more spiritual approach—one with a more humanistic, holistic view based on inherent reverence toward the natural world. Writers whose orientations range from Buddhism to evangelical Christianity to Catholicism to Native American …

Edward H Durell, New Orleans Civic Reformer And Reconstruction Judge, Sean C. Perry Jan 2013

Edward H Durell, New Orleans Civic Reformer And Reconstruction Judge, Sean C. Perry

Master's Theses and Capstones

Judge Edward Henry Durell has faded from the historiography of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. When he does appear, the long held belief that he was a drunkard, corrupt and feeble man sometimes remain. This Thesis utilizes his virtually untouched personal papers to reveal a far different picture. Edward Durell exerted great effort to never be corrupt, despite numerous opportunities to enrich himself at the public expense. He was a brilliant man, who played an important role in modernizing the infrastructure and government of New Orleans in the years 1850 through 1856. He served in his many public …

Religiosity, Identity, And Depression In Late Adolescence: A Longitudinal Study, Erin Sandler Apr 2012

Religiosity, Identity, And Depression In Late Adolescence: A Longitudinal Study, Erin Sandler

Honors Theses and Capstones

In this study, longitudinal associations among religiosity, identity style, identity commitment, and depression were examined in a sample of late adolescents. Online survey data were collected in two waves with an approximate six-week interval. Correlations demonstrated that high levels of negative aspects of religiosity, such as negative religious coping, predicted high levels of depression. Other aspects of religiosity, such as positive religious coping, did not predict depression. In addition, high levels of diffuse-avoidant identity style predicted high levels of depression, and high levels of identity commitment predicted low levels of depression. However, when a regression was performed with all the …

Effects Of New Hampshire's Same-Sex Marriage Legislation On Married Same-Sex Couples And Their Families: A Preliminary Study, Amber J. Royea

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study explores the effects of New Hampshire's revised marriage statute and the ability to marry on married, resident same-sex couples and their families. The researcher used qualitative research methods in order to investigate the experiences of eleven participants in regards to the effects that marriage has had in their lives and the lives of their dependent and adult children. Based on the data and content analysis, a grounded theory of developing a same-sex marital identity emerged showing that the effects of marriage depend on an on-going interplay between personal and social contexts. Participants' lives were affected by marriage in …

Assaulting America's Mainstream Values: Hans Zeiger's “Get Off My Honor: The Assault On The Boy Scouts Of America”, Eric Alan Isaacson Jun 2009

Assaulting America's Mainstream Values: Hans Zeiger's “Get Off My Honor: The Assault On The Boy Scouts Of America”, Eric Alan Isaacson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Lieutenant Colonel Oliver L. North’s Foreword to Hans Zeiger’s book Get Off My Honor: The Assault on the Boy Scouts of America warns that one of America’s most trusted institutions, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), is under siege for advancing “what many of us euphemistically call traditional values.

Euphemistically?

North’s choice of words inadvertently reveals what he and many other so-called “social conservatives” obviously know in their hearts—that the BSA’s recent campaign against gay youth and religious liberals is grounded in something other than America’s proudest traditions and values. Hans Zeiger proceeds himself to remove any illusions in …

Watchmen Of The New Jerusalem: Jedidiah Morse, The Bavarian Illuminati And The Refashioning Of The Jeremiad Tradition In New England, Rachel A. Snell Jan 2008

Watchmen Of The New Jerusalem: Jedidiah Morse, The Bavarian Illuminati And The Refashioning Of The Jeremiad Tradition In New England, Rachel A. Snell

Master's Theses and Capstones

On May 9, 1798, the Reverend Jedidiah Morse of Charlestown, Massachusetts introduced a threat to both American government and religion in the form of the Bavarian Illuminati. This thesis argues that the Bavarian Illuminati sermons represent an attempt by the orthodox Congregational clergy in Massachusetts to mediate between republican ideology and traditional New England religious expectations by utilizing the clerical role of social watchmen to instill a sense of virtue in the American public and guide the development of a New Jerusalem in republican America. The goals of the clergy in propagating the Bavarian Illuminati threat ultimately failed catastrophically. Although …

Accounting For Taste: The Early American Music Business And Secularization In Music Aesthetics, 1720--1825, Peter S. Leavenworth Jan 2007

Accounting For Taste: The Early American Music Business And Secularization In Music Aesthetics, 1720--1825, Peter S. Leavenworth

Doctoral Dissertations

This study redefines popular music in early America as sacred music sung and performed in most churches and, starting in the 1790s, theater music imported from England. Rather than more static secular ballads and traditional dance pieces customarily understood as popular music, sacred and theater music intersected with more people more often and did so with more participation. Conflicting tastes of practitioners of religious music and secularizing influences from the theater created a series of reforms and counter measures that featured regional, as well as personal, fractures in American society. These personal and public debates, carried out in diaries, letters, …

Toward Eco -Citizenship: A Praxis For Empowerment, Penelope S. Morrow Jan 2006

Toward Eco -Citizenship: A Praxis For Empowerment, Penelope S. Morrow

Doctoral Dissertations

My teaching practice and research is about holistic education which assumes that, at some fundamental level, everything is connected. Holistic education is a philosophy, a worldview, that challenges the fragmented, reductionist, mechanistic and nationalistic assumptions of mainstream culture and education. The ultimate goal is to transform the way people look at themselves and their relationships in/to the world from a fragmented to an integrative perspective. This emerging paradigm can also be called ecological, evolutionary, spiritual and global. There is a growing belief that such education is fundamentally spiritual, in its search for wholeness.

Western civilization has been dominated from its …
