A Global Gene Expression Approach To Exploring Rock Colonization By Blastococcus Saxobsidens, Ryan Patrick Wilmot
A Global Gene Expression Approach To Exploring Rock Colonization By Blastococcus Saxobsidens, Ryan Patrick Wilmot
Doctoral Dissertations
Introduction: Blastococcus saxobsidens is an endolithic bacterium associated with biodegradation of stone monuments across the Mediterranean basin. Recently, strains of the bacterium have been isolated from high altitude deserts in Chile, volcanic glass in Iceland, and from masonry of several cultural heritage sites across Europe and the Americas. Blastococcus saxobsidens global dispersion has been linked to patterns of wind distributed dust particles. The physiology that this bacterium uses to colonize a wide range of rock types in such distinct locations has not been previously explored however. This project has established that B. saxobsidens colonizes and respires a variety of chemically …

The Failure Of Religious Conversion: Mormon Missionaries In Ireland Between 1850 And 1870, Hadleigh F. Weber
The Failure Of Religious Conversion: Mormon Missionaries In Ireland Between 1850 And 1870, Hadleigh F. Weber
Student Research Projects
Ireland in 1850 was full of empty potato fields and people that were closer to death than their next meal. The country was in the throes of one of the worst famines in history. The Irish Potato Famine decreased the population of Ireland by 20-25% between 1845 and 1851. Despite the bleak time in the country's history, missionaries of different religions continued to flock to Ireland in hopes of converting the dwindling population. Missionaries were almost always met with resistance from both the largely Catholic population and the minority Protestant population. These denominations had a long history of conflict with …

Safeguarding The Lives Of Children Affected By Boko Haram: Application Of The Safe Model Of Child Protection To A Rights-Based Situation Analysis, Rosie O'Connor, Theresa S. Betancourt, Ngozi V. Enelamah
Faculty Publications
The Boko Haram insurgency in northeast Nigeria is responsible for the highest number of lives lost in Africa in the past decade. The country has witnessed significant violations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Nigeria has signed and ratified. For instance, Nigeria had the second-highest number of children recruited to armed groups and the third-highest number of abductions in 2018. Current humanitarian efforts primarily target camps for internally displaced persons, while state strategies focus mainly on addressing security through combatant-targeted interventions. However, there is a need for more rights-based, integrated, and multifaceted approaches to …

Sars-Cov-2: An Investigation On Mutagenicity And Its Effects On Infectivity And Mortality, Tyler Elliott Silverwood
Sars-Cov-2: An Investigation On Mutagenicity And Its Effects On Infectivity And Mortality, Tyler Elliott Silverwood
Honors Theses and Capstones
SARS-CoV-2, the etiological agent of the COVID-19 pandemic, has rapidly become a worldwide public health concern. Classified as a betacoronavirus, it is the third human coronavirus (HCoV) to emerge in the 21st century that causes severe disease, alongside SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. The genome consists of open reading frames encoding accessory proteins and four structural proteins, including the spike protein which is a key determinant of host cell tropism. Mutations within the genome, particularly the spike gene, have been linked in-vitro to increased binding affinity to the human receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2), increased fitness in human hosts, and immune evasion. …

Well Connected Communities 2021 Social Network Analysis, Julien Kouamé
UNH Cooperative Extension
This study aims to enhance our understanding of the impact of UNHCE support through the Well Connected Communities (WCC) grant initiative. “Well Connected Communities (WCC) is a national well-being initiative of America’s Cooperative Extension System in partnership with National 4-H Council. WCC was launched in 2018 and is using the power of combined youth-adult voice and action to recognize and address systemic health inequities. It is scaling successful innovations from this work across the Extension network in order to catalyze ambitious changes at the local, state, and national levels, so that everyone has an equal opportunity to live a better, …

Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering The Nurse Entrepreneur, Bri Mcgrath
Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering The Nurse Entrepreneur, Bri Mcgrath
Inquiry Journal 2020
South Africa, burdened by a wide wealth gap, meets the healthcare needs of the minority with health insurance but provides unreliable services for the uninsured. The uninsured clients suffer from long public clinic wait times and poor-quality care. The Unjani model was launched to provide high-quality affordable primary health care (PHC) to employed but uninsured families. Unjani aims to empower black women nurses as entrepreneurs and providers by providing them with shipping containers converted into world-class health clinics. Although nurses are central to the Unjani model, there is no published research describing their experience. I performed a qualitative study to …
Buddhist Approaches To Environmentalism And Food Insecurity, Grace N. Stott
Buddhist Approaches To Environmentalism And Food Insecurity, Grace N. Stott
Honors Theses and Capstones
Buddhism is a religion deep-rooted in history, most prevalent in Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. 3 These countries are “developing countries” and may not have the necessary infrastructure to succeed economically and have increased health risks, one of which is food insecurity.4 With climate change an increased threat, these areas of the world are more susceptible to environmental problems. The Buddhism religion strongly values sustainability, in both the environment and food insecurity. It values helping others, both humans and nature. Despite the adversity they face, Buddhists have dealt better than communities in similar situations of poverty and …

Assessment Of The Localized Flow And Tidal Energy Conversion System At An Estuarine Bridge, Kaelin Chancey
Assessment Of The Localized Flow And Tidal Energy Conversion System At An Estuarine Bridge, Kaelin Chancey
Master's Theses and Capstones
As part of the Living Bridge Project, a cross-flow tidal turbine and estuarine instrumentation have been deployed in the Piscataqua River at the Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. At the turbine location, flow measurements were taken and are compared to a previous, nearby tidal energy resource assessment. A higher mean kinetic power density was observed for the most recent acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) survey conducted. Acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV) data was collected in order to study the spatial distribution of the currents around the turbine. Differences along the turbine deployment platform were determined to be …
