Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan Jul 1988

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan

Public Health Faculty Publications

A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

Characterization Of The Aquatic Environment In Lake Mead Near The Proposed Spring Canyon Pumped-Storage Project, And Assessment Of Potential Aquatic Impacts, Charles R. Liston, Stephen J. Grabowski, Bureau Of Reclamation Jun 1988

Characterization Of The Aquatic Environment In Lake Mead Near The Proposed Spring Canyon Pumped-Storage Project, And Assessment Of Potential Aquatic Impacts, Charles R. Liston, Stephen J. Grabowski, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

A pumped storage system consists of an upper reservoir and lower reservoir separated by an elevation difference. During low demand energy periods such as nights and weekends water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir using available energy from conventional steam electric power plants. During high energy demand periods, such as mornings and afternoons of weekdays, upper reservoir water is allowed to drop back down through the same system of water conduits and turbines, generating electricity to conveniently meet abrupt electrical energy requirements. The same water turbines thus act both as pumps and as conventional hydroelectric turbines.

On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu May 1988

On Purely Exponential Logic Queries, Kazem Taghva, Tian-Zheng Wu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The recursive nature of logic programs has long been the subject of optimization techniques [2, 8]. Recently, the database community has taken interest in extending the expressive power of relational algebra by augmenting it with function-free Horn style logic queries. This extension has led to various optimization techniques [2, 6, 8]. It seems, almost invariably, these techniques are most efficient in the processing of linear recursive queries. Moreover, as the equivalence of nonlinear rules to linear rules in general is undecidable [3, 9], the best one can hope is to rewrite some nonlinear rules as linear rules. For this reason, …

Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan Mar 1988

Virginity And Celibacy As Health Issues, Mary Guinan

Public Health Faculty Publications

Sexual behavior is both a health issue and a moral issue. Hence public education on sexuality has traditionally come from two main sources, those individuals or groups concerned with health and those concerned with morals. In his book No Magic Bullet (Oxford University Press, 1985), Allan Brandt describes the tensions that developed between these groups over the control of sexually transmitted diseases in the United States early in this century. Both groups wanted to control sexual behavior, but for different reasons. Public health personnel wanted to change sexual behavior in order to control infection and disease, while moralists believed that …

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Feb 1988

Environmental Assessment Of Las Vegas Wash And Lake Mead Artificial Wetlands Demonstration Project, John R. Baker, R. M. Gersberg, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Publications (WR)

The effective use of artificial wetlands for treatment of municipal wastewater is well documented; however, design and economic data for artificial wetlands development are limited (Gersberg et al., 1984a). This is due partly to regional differences in climate, soils, and vegetation and partly to the desired waste treatment. As a result, specific treatment levels and cost benefits relative to the use of an artificial wetlands for a particular site cannot be evaluated adequately without a pilot demonstration project. Las Vegas Wash receives sewage effluent from the Las Vegas metropolitan area and has been designated as a wetlands community park. Las …

Morphology And Development Of The Red Rock Canyon Alluvial Fan, Clark County, Nevada, Cheryl Mcdonnell-Canan Jan 1988

Morphology And Development Of The Red Rock Canyon Alluvial Fan, Clark County, Nevada, Cheryl Mcdonnell-Canan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Changes in morphology and pedogenic carbonate accumulation establish relative ages of a chronosequence of calcic soils and pedogenic calcretes that underlie four surfaces identified on the Red Rock Canyon alluvial fan. All surfaces identified are formed of limestone alluvium, occur at elevations of 853 m, and share the same climate and vegetation. These surfaces were mapped and delimited by color, texture, dissection, and soil development and were ranked in relative age by elevation and topographic position; Because of difficulty in measuring pedogenic carbonate in soils derived from calcareous alluvium, a technique employing macroscopic and microscopic visual determinations, combined with Chittick …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Algebraic approach to the feedback system design is reviewed towards the development of a Computer Aided Design of Control Systems package in a single-variate setting. In the solutions of both the problems presented here, we endeavor to give a complete parameterization of the set of compensators which meet design specifications; Computer Aided Design of Control Systems using stable or rational fractional approach is considered. Starting from a plant transfer function, closed loop control system with desired constraints and parameters is designed easily. The parameters can be so chosen that the closed loop system is configured into stabilization; stabilization and tracking; …

Sedimentological Constraints On Middle Miocene Extensional Tectonism Of The Southern Las Vegas Range, Southern Nevada, Jack Edward Deibert Jan 1988

Sedimentological Constraints On Middle Miocene Extensional Tectonism Of The Southern Las Vegas Range, Southern Nevada, Jack Edward Deibert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A depositional-tectonic model is proposed for the reconstruction of a Miocene lacustrine basin in the southern Las Vegas Range, Nevada, that was fragmented during a period of extensional tectonism. The model suggests that the sediments were deposited in an isolated basin during initiation of normal faulting in the Sheep Range extensional allochthon 12 to 16 Ma. After 12 Ma, deposition in this basin was terminated by normal faulting followed by oroflexural rotation along the Las Vegas Valley shear zone; The unique Middle Miocene sequence is 335-m-thick and consists of interbedded nonmarine limestone, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate, megabreccia, and volcanic ash. The …

Sex-Role Congruence: Marital Satisfaction And Household Division Of Labor, Jack Paul Gillespie Jan 1988

Sex-Role Congruence: Marital Satisfaction And Household Division Of Labor, Jack Paul Gillespie

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examines household organization and the perceived level of marital well-being by focusing on the married couple as the unit of analysis. The amount of time that both spouses are involved in the work force and participate in household labor is investigated through reports from both the husband and wife, as are the measures of marital satisfaction; Fifty-eight husbands and wives completed a series of questionnaires and psychological scales that assessed demographic information, sex-role orientation, sex-role congruence, marital satisfaction, and household task performance. The findings of this investigation support earlier contentions of the importance of focusing on sex-role attitude …

A water quality modeling study of the Mohave Reach of the Lower Colorado River (from Davis Dam to the Nevada/California Stateline) was conducted to evaluate potential water quality impacts resulting from a proposed Laughlin, Nevada wastewater effluent discharge. The study included four major components: (1) review of the current regulatory framework; (2) a field data collection program to document existing water quality conditions in winter, summer, and fall; (3) development and verification of far-field and near-field (mixing zone) water quality models; and (4) application of the models to project future river quality conditions for several treatment-discharge alternatives as well as …

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan Jan 1988

Pms Or Perifollicular Phase Euphoria?, Mary Guinan

Public Health Faculty Publications

Why is it that so little is known about PMS? First of all, there is no agreement on what PMS is. If investigators are referring to different sets of symptoms, how can studies be comparable? In fact, they are not. Not only are the symptoms different, but the timing of symptoms is different, Some studies describe symptoms that occur 7 to 10 days before the onset of menses, while others include symptoms that begin 14 days before the onset of menses and continue for 7 days after onset. This definition suggests that women may have PMS-related symptoms during 21 days …

Have You Had Your Mammogram, Doctor?, Mary Guinan Jan 1988

Have You Had Your Mammogram, Doctor?, Mary Guinan

Public Health Faculty Publications

Breast cancer incidence continues to increase in the United States, with more than 130,000 new cases and 42,000 deaths expected this year. Today, one in every ten women in the United States will develop breast cancer at sometime during their lives. Breast cancer can be prevented by early prophylactic bilateral mastectomy, ie, removal of the breasts before any signs or symptoms develop. This practice was advocated by a male gynecologist colleague of mine. When I expressed horror at his suggestion that I have such a procedure at age 32, he challenged me to defend myself against advocating a practice that …

G. H. Mead, Socialism, And The Progressive Agenda, Dmitri N. Shalin Jan 1988

G. H. Mead, Socialism, And The Progressive Agenda, Dmitri N. Shalin

Sociology Faculty Research

Mead is known today primarily for his original philosophy and social psychology. Much less familiar to us is Mead the reformer, a man who sought to balance political engagement with academic detachment and who established himself as an astute critic of contemporary American society. This paper examines Mead's political beliefs and his theory of the reform process. Drawing on little known sources and archival materials, it demonstrates that Mead shared socialism's humanitarian ends and that, following the dominant progressive ideology of his time, he sought to accomplish these ends by constitutional means. An argument is made that Mead's ideological commitments …

The Relationship Between The Actual And Ideal Leadership Styles Of High School Assistant Principals Over Selected District Instructional Objectives, T. Brock Morris Jan 1988

The Relationship Between The Actual And Ideal Leadership Styles Of High School Assistant Principals Over Selected District Instructional Objectives, T. Brock Morris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem this study focused on was, what was the relationship between the actual and ideal leadership styles of high school assistant principals over selected district instructional objectives. In completing the research for this study, the situational leadership style and readiness theories of Paul Hersey and Kenneth H. Blanchard were used; Their theories regarding the relationship between a leader's actual and ideal leadership styles were applied to the assistant principals and teachers of nine high schools of the Clark County School District in Southern Nevada. A random sampling of these teachers were given the Readiness Style Match survey developed by …

By legislative mandate, Florida publicly-supported college and university students must demonstrate, via acceptable performance on the College-Level Academic Skills Test, that they are eligible for award of associate-in-arts degrees and matriculation in university upper divisions. The CLAST, designed to assess possession of basic academic skills, consists of four subtests: computation, writing, reading and essay. The essays are graded by teams of judges; the other subtests are objective and machine scored; This study was designed to identify and describe salient features of public community college management, teaching and student support innovations which were instituted in response to the CLAST mandate. Senior …

In Hope Of Heaven: English Recusant Prison Writings Of The Sixteenth Century, Paul E Strauss Jan 1988

In Hope Of Heaven: English Recusant Prison Writings Of The Sixteenth Century, Paul E Strauss

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the prison writings of four Catholic writers in sixteenth century England, all of whom were imprisoned for their failure to take the Oath of Supremacy acknowledging the English monarch as Head of the Church. They were all executed or exiled for their resistance to the Oath. They also wrote books while they were in prison to encourage themselves and others to persist in the faith, with the exception of Robert Southwell, who wrote his book shortly before his imprisonment; John Fisher was imprisoned in 1534 and executed in 1535. While in prison he wrote two letters …

Fish Aid: The Lake Mead Fertilization Project, Richard Axler, Larry Paulson, Peter Vaux, Patrick Sollberger, Donald H. Baepler Jan 1988

Fish Aid: The Lake Mead Fertilization Project, Richard Axler, Larry Paulson, Peter Vaux, Patrick Sollberger, Donald H. Baepler

Publications (WR)

Sport fishing at Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona is a resource valued at nearly $100 million per year to southern Nevada. During the past two decades, salmonids, mostly trout, have disappeared entirely, the largemouth bass catch has drastically declined despite greater fishing pressure, and the condition factors for striped bass have steadily deteriorated. It appears that a major reduction in phosphorus loading caused by the upstream impoundment of the Colorado River to form Lake Powell in 1963 and advanced wastewater treatment removal of phosphorus from domestic wastewater inflows in 1981 are the principal factors responsible for decreased production at …

Changes In The Morphometry Of Las Vegas Wash And The Impact On Water Quality, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation Jan 1988

Changes In The Morphometry Of Las Vegas Wash And The Impact On Water Quality, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries stormwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from two sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. Over 80 percent of the normal discharge of approximately 3.4 m3/s (120 ft3/s) consists of effluent from the City of Las Vegas and Clark County sewage treatment plants. Beginning in the 1950s, a large wetland area developed along the wash that supported waterfowl populations and contributed to some water quality transformations. Heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the area in 1983 and 1984 resulted in erosion and channelization that greatly …

Hydrology Of Bishop Creek, Inyo County, California: An Isotopic Analysis, Michael Louis Space Jan 1988

Hydrology Of Bishop Creek, Inyo County, California: An Isotopic Analysis, Michael Louis Space

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Bishop Creek, located in east-central California on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada supports fauna and flora that otherwise could not exist. There are approximately 3000 meters of relief in the Bishop Creek watershed. The headwaters of the creek originate from three man-made lakes, situated at 2790 to 2975 meters above sea level. During its course, diverted water from Bishop Creek flows through a series of five hydroelectric power plants, resulting in streamflow that is less than that expected under natural conditions much of the year. Stream diversion for hydroelectric power production may have adverse effects on the riparian …

Brothels In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Toward A Heuristic Definition Of Commercial Speech, Marc S. Charisse Jan 1988

Brothels In The Marketplace Of Ideas: Toward A Heuristic Definition Of Commercial Speech, Marc S. Charisse

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nevada's legal brothels offer a unique opportunity to study the problem of defining commercial speech. Although state law forbids advertisements of houses of prostitution in counties where brothels themselves are against law, brothel messages are abundant in Clark County, where any form of prostitution is illegal. The publishers of these messages claim they are constitutionally protected editorial speech rather than advertisements which enjoy little or no First Amendment protection, thus confounding the efforts of prosecutors who say they would otherwise move to remove such messages from public display; The thesis examines the development of the U.S. Supreme Court's commercial speech …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An analysis of the effectiveness of Las Vegas Municipal Court's stress management workshop was conducted. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was given to fifty one volunteers prior to and after a stress management workshop. Of the 51, seven participated in a four hour workshop given in two sessions. Those attending the workshop had elevated stress scores after the workshop. Exposure to the symptoms of stress without adequate follow-up on how to treat the symptoms may have led to the unexpected result. It is on the basis of these findings that future workshops concentrate on identifying stress related symptoms as well as …

Late Holocene Earthflows Of The Willard Playa/Dune Complex, Estancia Valley, New Mexico; A Geomorphic Response To Climatic Change, Kurt A Goebel Jan 1988

Late Holocene Earthflows Of The Willard Playa/Dune Complex, Estancia Valley, New Mexico; A Geomorphic Response To Climatic Change, Kurt A Goebel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Late-middle to late Holocene dune sediment that overlies Pleistocene lacustrine sediment marks the onset of xeric conditions in the Estancia Valley, central New Mexico. Incised into the underlying lacustrine sediments, the modern deflation basins are enclosed by parabolic dunes composed of clay and gypsum derived from the underlying sediment; Located on the in-facing duneslopes of the deflation basins, the most striking geomorphic feature of this dune complex are numerous elongated scars. These relict scars document a geomorphically distinct earthflow event. Arroyos that cut into flow scars expose eolian earthflow sediment overlying lacustrine deposits. In the zone of depletion, erosional-flow evidence …

Pms: Cyclical Variation In Attentional Capacity With Pms And Non-Pms Women, Francine Linda Greenstein Jan 1988

Pms: Cyclical Variation In Attentional Capacity With Pms And Non-Pms Women, Francine Linda Greenstein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The increasing need for women to have an expanded role in decision making capacities and in professional areas raises persistent questions concerning the effect of menstrual cycle fluctuations on performance, specifically, cognitive/intellectual functioning. A wide variety of recurring cyclical and emotional symptoms have been reported as common to women suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS). This study examined possible impairment of cognitive functioning during the PMS phase of the menstrual cycle using PMS and Non-PMS women. The two groups were compared over three menstrual cycles on a digit span task, a letter detection task, and a combination of the two. PMS …
