A General Mathematical Model Of Stenoses, Jordan Jimmy Crabbe Jan 2007

A General Mathematical Model Of Stenoses, Jordan Jimmy Crabbe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Incidence and the prevalence rate of stroke in the United States has been of great concern to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the American Society of Stroke, American Stroke Association and the U.S. government as a whole; Many mathematical models of the stroke problem have been proposed and solved using diverse methods and computations. Most of the models are based on the stenoses, occlusion or rupture of the artery and the formation of cerebral aneurysms, which all lead to the occurrence of stroke; This paper utilizes a direct approach to change …

Impact Of The Firefighter Academy On Recruits' General Well-Being And Distress, Alyssa Maria Demos Jan 2007

Impact Of The Firefighter Academy On Recruits' General Well-Being And Distress, Alyssa Maria Demos

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Coronary heart disease has consistently been shown to be the leading cause of fatalities among professional firefighters. Chronic psychosocial stressors, particularly occupational stress, have been investigated in relation to cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that the elevated occupational prevalence of adverse health outcomes among fire service personnel is due to their work-related stressors. Fire academy instructors have the responsibility of improving the minds and bodies of recruits; therefore, this research evaluated the self-perceived general well-being and distress among firefighter recruits in the southwestern United States. The results were used to assess the need for stress management …

An Analysis Of Social Skills Instruction Provided In Teacher Education And In-Service Training Programs For General And Special Educators, Nicole Dobbins Jan 2006

An Analysis Of Social Skills Instruction Provided In Teacher Education And In-Service Training Programs For General And Special Educators, Nicole Dobbins

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The effective demonstration of social skills in classroom and personal settings is essential to successfully develop and sustain professional and personal relationships. Students with disabilities often exhibit social skills deficits which, in turn, place them at risk to experience school failure, peer rejection, and/or mental health problems (Elksnin & Elksnin, 2006). There is an increasing number of students with disabilities receiving instruction in the general education classroom setting (U.S. Department of Education, 2003). Direct instruction of social skills is imperative to ensure the academic and personal success of students; The research supports the direct instruction of discrete social skills behaviors …

Comparing Web-Based Instruction To Traditional Instruction For Teaching Special Education Content To General Education Preservice Teachers, Kelly Elizabeth O'Neal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It has been documented that there are multiple ways to offer teacher preparation course work. Incorporating technology into teacher preparation programs using Web-based instruction may help address obstacles involving distance and time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of using Web-based instruction as an appropriate method for disseminating information and teaching undergraduates in the college of education about appropriate teaching practices for students with disabilities. Data were collected to answer three specific research questions related to student achievement, student satisfaction, and quality and quantity of discussions; There were 44 undergraduate participants in the study who were …

Instructional Differentiation In General Education And The Gifted Resource Room: Teacher And Student Perceptions, Mary Trombatore Greene Jan 2001

Instructional Differentiation In General Education And The Gifted Resource Room: Teacher And Student Perceptions, Mary Trombatore Greene

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study compared the perceptions of three groups concerning differentiated educational opportunities provided for students with gifts and talents. The perceptions of general education teachers, gifted resource room teachers, and students with gifts and talents were collected using a questionnaire that encompassed questions focused on cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skill development; Results indicated that gifted resource room teachers and general education classroom teachers perceived that they provided differentiated instruction more often in the cognitive and interpersonal domains than in the intrapersonal domain. The most frequent differentiated instructional practices used by teachers (general education and gifted resource room) were in the …

A Self-Stabilizing Interval Routing Scheme In General Networks, Doina Bein Jan 2001

A Self-Stabilizing Interval Routing Scheme In General Networks, Doina Bein

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Pivot Interval Routing (PIR) scheme [EGP98] divides the nodes in the network into pivots and clients of the pivots. A pivot acts as a center for the partition of the network formed by its clients. Each node can send messages directly only to a small subset of vertices in its nearby vicinity or to the pivots; An algorithm is called self-stabilizing [Dij74] if, starting from an arbitrary initial state, it is guaranteed to reach a correct state in finite time and with no exterior help. In this thesis, we present a self-stabilizing PIR algorithm. The algorithm starts with no …

General Broadcasting Algorithms In One-Port Wormhole Routed Hypercubes, Myung Hoon Lee Jan 1996

General Broadcasting Algorithms In One-Port Wormhole Routed Hypercubes, Myung Hoon Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Wormhole routing has been accepted as an efficient switching mechanism in point-to-point interconnection networks. Here the network resource, i.e. node buffers and communication channels, are effectively utilized to deliver message across the network; We consider the problem of broadcasting a message in the hypercue equipped with the wormhole switching mechanism. The model is a generalization of an earlier work and considers a broadcast path-length of {dollar}m\ (1\leq m\leq n{dollar}) in the n-cube with a single-port communication capability. In this thesis, the scheme of e-cube and a Gray code path routing and intermediate reception capability have been adopted in order to …

Civic Virtue And Public Policy: Discerning The Particulars Of Reforming The General Mining Law Of 1872, Scott Fitzgerald Murray Jan 1996

Civic Virtue And Public Policy: Discerning The Particulars Of Reforming The General Mining Law Of 1872, Scott Fitzgerald Murray

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

How ought we, both as a society and as individuals, to reason about public policy matters? This question is examined for the purposes of analyzing the General Mining Law of 1872 and advocating reforms to this public lands law anachronism. Drawing from Aristotle and David Hume, individuals of good character, acting as citizens in pursuit of the public good through historically informed self-government deliberate best about public policy matters. It is through the exercise of civic virtue, which civic republican government encourages, that incremental and acceptable solutions to public policy problems are most likely to be found. When examined using …

Reaction Time And General Intellectual Ability: The Effects Of Cues On The Relationship, Nancy S Sirkin Jan 1990

Reaction Time And General Intellectual Ability: The Effects Of Cues On The Relationship, Nancy S Sirkin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between reaction time (RT) and intelligence. Fifteen female and nine male caucasian undergraduates and one black male undergraduate ranging in age from 19 to 38 served as subjects. The measure of intelligence was the Otis-Quick Scoring Mental Ability Test. An Apple MacIntosh personal computer was used to present stimuli and measure reaction time. There were four RT conditions; simple reaction time, and three complex conditions in which no cue appeared, a correct cue, or an incorrect cue appeared. A significant correlation was found between the correct cue/no cue difference score (r = {dollar}-{dollar}.43, p {dollar}<{dollar}.05).
