Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam Dec 2020

Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The changing fire regime of landscapes across the Mojave Desert has prompted considerable research on its effects on plant community recovery, but it has not been widely studied what effects wildfire may have on native pollinators and the vital ecosystem services they provide. Ecological changes from increased wildfire severity from invasive exotic annual grasses will likely continue influencing pollinator habitats and floral resources. Understanding the effects that wildfires have on pollinators is valuable to make decisions as to whether active management and restoration activities are required to conserve ecologically vital pollinator functions. The intention of this thesis was to examine …

Thinking About Thinking: Children’S Awareness And Development Of Metacognitive Emotion Regulation, Reilly Rowland Dec 2020

Thinking About Thinking: Children’S Awareness And Development Of Metacognitive Emotion Regulation, Reilly Rowland

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Metacognitive emotion regulation is a complex system of our underlying thinking that contributes to the emotions that we endure. By gaining an understanding of this concept, young children can learn various strategies, e.g. cognitive reappraisal, problem solving, and delayed gratification, to help alter their thoughts and/or goals to alleviate negative emotion. Thus, they are able to increase their confidence in their own metacognitive emotion regulation abilities and awareness. This study explored the awareness of young children and their metacognitive emotion regulation abilities, the strategies that young children take part in to try and control negative emotion, and the learning strategies …

Developments Of Machine Learning Potentials For Atomistic Simulations, Howard Yanxon Dec 2020

Developments Of Machine Learning Potentials For Atomistic Simulations, Howard Yanxon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Atomistic modeling methods such as molecular dynamics play important roles in investigating time-dependent physical and chemical processes at the microscopic level. In the simulations, energy and forces, sometimes including stress tensor, need to be recalculated iteratively as the atomic configuration evolves. Consequently, atomistic simulations crucially depend on the accuracy of the underlying potential energy surface. Modern quantum mechanical modeling based on density functional theory can consistently generate an accurate description of the potential energy surface. In most cases, molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory suffer from highly demanding computational costs. On the other hand, atomistic simulations based on …

Vibration Overtone Hyperpolarizability Measured For H2 Using Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation, Rachel Ellis Dec 2020

Vibration Overtone Hyperpolarizability Measured For H2 Using Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation, Rachel Ellis

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The vibrational contribution to the second hyperpolarizability (γ) of gas phase H2 was measured using electric field induced second harmonic generation. Measurements were made for the pure vibrational 3-0 Q(J) overtone transitions (v=0,J → v’=3,J for J = 0,1,2,3). Measured intensities were found to be 4-14% larger than ab initio calculations. The first chapter of this thesis provides an introduction to nonlinear optics, second harmonic generation, and the tensor nature of hyperpolarizabilities. The second chapter provides theoretical expressions for γ and relevant static and Raman polarizabilities. The third chapter covers the experimental design and electric field induced second harmonic generation. …

A Divide And Conquer With Semi-Global Failover For Software Defined Networks, Kasra Goravanchi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nowadays, many service providers need to provide many other functions than just a network connectivity. They also need to provide network functions such as network address translation, firewall, encryption, Domain Name Service (DNS), caching, routing and many other services. Usually these functions come with the hardware at the user or customer’s premises. This can increase the revenue of the revenue, but also can cost a lot and also be extremely difficult to maintain. Moreover, it is important to be able to configure the network and later modify the configuration to create fault tolerance and to prepare the system for future …

Rusalka And The Snow Maiden: A Comparative Study Of Two Fairytale Operas, Olivera Gjorgoska Dec 2020

Rusalka And The Snow Maiden: A Comparative Study Of Two Fairytale Operas, Olivera Gjorgoska

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The two late-romantic operas Rusalka by Antonín Dvořák and The Snow Maiden by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov are based on fairy tales, and combine romance, fantasy, and drama. Their plots develop in parallel universes and have astonishing similarities. However, the music and drama develop following different goals. In Rusalka, leitmotifs and dramatic harmonies shape the plot into a tragedy. In The Snow Maiden motives and melodies exist to describe the character rather than lead the story and the drama; the focus is on Russian folk elements, choruses, and people.

The main character in both operas is a naïve, beautiful, fairy-like female character …

The Relationship Among Sociocultural Assimilation, Dietary Behavior, And Physical Activity In Adult Latinxs In The U.S., Erick Lopez Dec 2020

The Relationship Among Sociocultural Assimilation, Dietary Behavior, And Physical Activity In Adult Latinxs In The U.S., Erick Lopez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation examines the relationship between sociocultural assimilation and health behaviors among adult Latinxs in the United States to address whether different assimilation models promote or hinder Latinx health. Existing research on assimilation and health behaviors among Latinxs relies heavily on the use of proxy measures of assimilation such as length of time in the U.S., nativity, age of arrival, and language preferences for surveys. These studies tend to show that greater assimilation to mainstream U.S. culture among Latinxs is associated with the adoption of poor health behaviors and the erosion of the immigrant health advantage. Research that uses sociocultural …

Constraining Viscous Protoplanetary Disk Models Using Alma Kinematic Observations, Ian Rabago Dec 2020

Constraining Viscous Protoplanetary Disk Models Using Alma Kinematic Observations, Ian Rabago

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Recent molecular line observations by ALMA have revealed the 3D velocity structure of protoplanetary disks, providing new insight on the mechanisms of disk accretion and ring/gap formation. Although the constant α viscous disk model has been widely used to describe the disk surface density evolution, it may not adequately describe the gas velocity at different disk heights. By carrying out viscous hydrodynamic simulations, we confirm that the vertical velocity structure varies considerably between these models. On the other hand, the surface density evolution of the disk is only dependent on the vertically integrated stress, and does not depend on a …

Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost Dec 2020

Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis will be primarily focused on directly proving that the determinacy of Borel games in X^ω is equivalent to the determinacy of certain long open games, from a fragment of ZFC that’s well-known to be insufficient to prove Borel determinacy. The main theorem is a level by level result which shows the equivalence between determinacy of open games in a long tree, [Υ^α], and determinacy of Σ_0^α games in X^ω. In Chapter 9, we mimic the proof used in our main theorem to show that the determinacy of clopen games in the product space X^ω × ω^ω is equivalent …

Synthesis, X-Ray Absorption, And X-Ray Diffraction Spectroscopy Studies Of Uranium Based Heavy Fermion Systems, Vahe Mkrtchyan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Heavy fermion systems have attracted a great deal of interest since the discovery of the phenomenon in the 1970s. Over the past 35 years, the research in this field revealed a variety of unprecedented properties that the conventional theoretical framework considered conflicting or impossible. The subset of intermetallic compounds containing rare earth and actinide elements is of special interest, as these materials exhibit a range of exotic properties associated with 4f or 5f electrons. A thorough examination of the reports in the literature indicates a delicate interplay between the competing ground states, giving rise to anomalous properties including non-Fermi liquid …

The Transformation Of Edgar Huntly: An American Awakening, Willie C. Sosa Dec 2020

The Transformation Of Edgar Huntly: An American Awakening, Willie C. Sosa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Since Charles Brockden Brown published his first novels in the late eighteenth century, he has subsequently shifted back and forth, in importance, from the center to the periphery of the American literary canon. In recent years however, a dramatic increase in scholarship on Brown shows his significance is once again trending back toward the center of importance in this field. Scholarship has tended to coalesce around four topics which can be categorized as postcolonial expansion, the wild city, the distinction between the city and wildness, and identity. Looking closely at identity, although the discourse has done a thorough job of …

The Economy Of (Dis)Honor In The Americas: A Transnational Rupturing Of American Literature Through Faulkner, García Márquez, And Silko, Clayton Neil Cobb Dec 2020

The Economy Of (Dis)Honor In The Americas: A Transnational Rupturing Of American Literature Through Faulkner, García Márquez, And Silko, Clayton Neil Cobb

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Honor is misunderstood within popular culture, but it is also misunderstood within academic contexts. This is due to a decoupling of the term from its long historical significance, a significance that must not be ignored. That is because honor in the Americas is a structure of the hemisphere’s colonial legacy, its manifestation in the cultural fabric a result of the invasion of the continents by European settlers and colonizers. In the case of history, philosophy, and social science, the study of honor is beginning to undergo appropriate theorization to recognize that legacy; however, within literary studies disciplines, critical understanding of …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Shared High-Speed Rail (HSR) networks are networks where two or more railway operators use the same railway network infrastructure for train operations. The train operations in the shared HSR network can be composed of different types of trains operating at different speeds with varying stops at stations in a network. The interactions between different types of trains in the shared HSR network depends on the characteristics of the network’s infrastructure and train operations, and affect the capacity of the network. When a rail operator who owns the infrastructure allows other operators to access its infrastructure, the additional traffic will lead …

Light Conditions During Desiccation And Rehydration Impact The Recovery Of Cultured Timmiella Crassinervis, Sotodeh Ebrahimi

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Many terrestrial mosses of xeric environments experience excess light during extended periods of desiccation. While dry or hydrated, excess light energy can lead to formation of reactive oxygen species and photoinhibition (e.g. damage to Photosystem II) which affects photosynthetic stress and efficiency. This study aimed to determine the effect of duration dry and light intensity (PAR) on cultured shoots of the chaparral moss Timmiella crassinervis, as well as to elucidate the optimal rehydration light conditions for this species. I hypothesized that 1) mosses exposed to higher light intensities during desiccation would incur more damage upon rehydration than those exposed to …

Exploring The Lived Experience Of Early-Career Millennial Nursing Faculty: Deriving Meaning From Their Perspective, Adrian Stamps

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An innovative way to combat the protracted nursing faculty shortage is to recruit up and coming generations of nurses to academia. The most recent generation to enter the academic ranks are millennials, often categorized in nursing by a birth year between 1981 and 2000. In contrast to preceding generations, millennials are seeking roles in academia earlier in their careers. Research has shown millennials have unique perspectives on the workplace and a tendency to leave positions if they are not satisfied. This pattern could pose a challenge for sustaining the nursing faculty workforce.

How millennials perceive their initial years in the …

ProcessJ is a modern Process-Oriented language that builds on previous work from other languages like occam and occam-pi. However, the only readily-available runtime system is built on top of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This is not a choice made intentionally, but simply out of a lack of other implementations -- until now. This thesis introduces the new C++-based runtime system for ProcessJ, coupled with a new C++ code generator for the ProcessJ compiler. This thesis later examines the implementation details of the runtime system, including the components that make it up. We also examine the ability to cooperatively schedule …

Current-Mode Photon-Counting Circuit With Sige Bicmos Input Stage, Gonzalo Guadalupe Arteaga Dec 2020

Current-Mode Photon-Counting Circuit With Sige Bicmos Input Stage, Gonzalo Guadalupe Arteaga

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Continued advances in photodetector technology have helped improve the imaging capabilities of LiDAR systems or other time-of-flight imaging efforts. As a major part of the receiver within a LiDAR system, the photodetector can offer features such as faster rise times, narrower pulse widths, or larger gains to help achieve greater timing resolution or sensitivity to faint light levels. These benefits, however, are contingent on the ability of the accompanying readout circuit to reliably process the fast, electrical signals generated by the photodetector. While common front-end circuits involve the use of feedback amplifiers, their stability can become a major concern at …
