Environmental anthropology seeks to identify issues and propose resolutions when humans are directly affected by environmental consequences or indirectly by policies that may marginalize the concerns of certain populations. Africanized Honey Bees created both environmental and policy consequences in southern Nevada. Identification of the issues was accomplished with literature review, participant observation, informal interview, and conferencing with academic and agency officials related to the human/bee problem. The controversy in risk assessment has implications for urban residents in southern Nevada. Both agricultural and urban environments may be economically and politically impacted by the colonization of feral Africanized Honey Bees. Urban populations …

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci

In environmental applications dealing with data from contaminated sites the positively skewed lognormal distribution has been the most commonly used model. The upper confidence limit (UCL) of the arithmetic mean of a lognormal population is computed by using the H-statistics. Recent concerns have arisen to the effectiveness of the H-Statistic based UCL for the mean of the lognormal distribution in instances of moderately to highly skewed data sets. In this paper the positively skewed Gamma distribution is considered as an alternative to the lognormal distribution and is shown to produce more reasonable UCL's for the mean.

Yucca Mountain is the site of a potential high-level nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The risks to health and safety of transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain may induce the residents of Nevada to move. When offered compensation, residents will weigh potential negative effects to their health from transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain against the amount of money offered. The presence of a threshold value between the bid amount offered and the level of risk perception indicates that at some level of risk, people cannot be induced to stay by compensation.
