Factors That Influence Male Millennials To Become Professional Librarians, Heidi Blackburn

This case study investigates what prompts male Millennials to join the historically stereotyped feminized library profession. The study addresses social, cultural, economic, and/or political factors that influence male Millennials to become professional librarians; the influence of technology on male Millennials currently enrolled in library and information science (LIS) graduate programs decisions to become professional librarians; and professional stereotypes male Millennials currently enrolled in LIS graduate programs encounter. To gather data, surveys were conducted with 231 participants enrolled in 37 LIS graduate programs across the United States, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 21 volunteers who participated in the surveys. Many libraries are redesigning their websites for great user experiences through clean design. But what if you’ve redesigned your website, but still have patrons who are frustrated? It’s time to focus on language. Librarian-ese and tech speak are confusing and defeat our patrons before they begin. In this session I’ll show how you can use plain language, one of the main tenets of usability, to boost patron confidence. I’ll share real-life examples of websites and chat transcripts showing how little changes in language can make a big difference.

Winona State University, Krueger Library, Summer 2013. Time for a library website reboot. We wanted our online presence to be user-focused, simple, and elegant. Our dilemma? No developers on staff at our library. Our vision was galaxies ahead of our tools and knowledge. We turned to our university Web Communications and Web Development teams to boldly go where the library website had not gone before. At first, we educated each other. As the number of diverse and underserved student populations in our schools increases, it is imperative that school librarians create an environment where all students, regardless of cultural and linguistic background, are welcomed, feel supported, and are afforded authentic opportunities for learning.
