Mobile Ip And Route Optimization: A Simulation Study., Preetha P. Kannadath Dec 1998

Mobile Ip And Route Optimization: A Simulation Study., Preetha P. Kannadath

Student Work

Powerful light-weight portable computers, the availability of wireless networks, and the popularity of the Internet are driving the need for better networking support for mobile hosts. Current versions of the Internet Protocol (IP), make an implicit assumption that the point at which a computer attaches to a network is fixed and its IP address identifies the network to which it is attached. Packets are sent to a computer based on the location information contained in its IP address. Therefore, transparent host mobility is not supported by IP. But there is a growing need for users to be able to connect …

The Influence Of Exercise Self-Efficacy And Social Support On Exercise For Air Force Personnel, Jerry Wilson Dec 1998

The Influence Of Exercise Self-Efficacy And Social Support On Exercise For Air Force Personnel, Jerry Wilson

Student Work

The purpose of the study was to determine how social support and self-efficacy function in each stage of change in exercise behavior and also to study to what extent social support and self-efficacy can predict what stage of change a person is in. To determine this, 179 Air Force men and women ranging in age from 19 to 54 years old at U.S. Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, were administered a questionnaire to determine their exercise stage of change, self-efficacy, and social support from family and friends. The stages of change for exercise were as follows: 0.0% precontemplation, …

Temporal Integration In 17- And 20-Month Old Infants As Assessed By Elicited Imitation, Rebecca M. Starr Dec 1998

Temporal Integration In 17- And 20-Month Old Infants As Assessed By Elicited Imitation, Rebecca M. Starr

Student Work

The present study used a unique task derived from the elicited imitation paradigm to assess temporal integration in 17- and 20-month-old infants. Experiment 1 implemented a simpler task than has previously been used in order to tap temporal integration ability in 17-month-olds. The results indicated that the performance of 17- month-olds did not improve over that of previous research (de Haan & Bauer 1997). Experiment 2 added storage and processing demands to the de Haan and Bauer task in order to assess the robustness of temporal integration ability in 20-month-olds. The results indicated that the performance of 20-month-olds did not …

Senior Outlook On Death And Dying: A Comparative Study Of Older Volunteers Serving Older Clients Versus Older Volunteers Serving Younger Clients, Charles O. Udstuen Dec 1998

Senior Outlook On Death And Dying: A Comparative Study Of Older Volunteers Serving Older Clients Versus Older Volunteers Serving Younger Clients, Charles O. Udstuen

Student Work

This thesis examines the attitudes toward death and dying held by volunteers in the Senior Companion Program as compared with those in the Foster Grandparent Program. These programs represent two distinct environments, since volunteers in the former program interact only with other senior citizens while those in the latter program interact with children. In recent years volunteerism has been studied extensively relative to the positive effects that volunteer activities have on those performing them. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of the particular surroundings in which the volunteers operate. The comparison of two groups of volunteers …

The findings are discussed, and the families’ experiences are examined in terms of ethnicity.

Preference For Top Managerial Positions As A Result Of Utility-Maximization Behavior Under Religious Moral Prescriptions, Corneliu Munteanu Dec 1998

Preference For Top Managerial Positions As A Result Of Utility-Maximization Behavior Under Religious Moral Prescriptions, Corneliu Munteanu

Student Work

The analysis described in this study is focused on the influence of religious ethics over individuals' tendency to seek top-managerial positions in their professional activity. The analysis assumes agents maximize utility. According to religious doctrines, afterlife salvation is a goal which could be accomplished only by following certain prescribed behavioural norms. While salvation can be considered as being an identical goal for most religions, the- way of pursuing it differs from one religion to another. This difference in means of attaining salvation reflects on various aspects of human behaviour. One of these aspects is the professional conduct of people engaging …

A Comparative Look At Marital Happiness And Conflict In American Cross-National And Same-Nation Marriages, Sandra Meinecke Dec 1998

A Comparative Look At Marital Happiness And Conflict In American Cross-National And Same-Nation Marriages, Sandra Meinecke

Student Work

This thesis explores the similarities and dissimilarities of perceived levels of marital conflict and happiness in cross-national and same-nation marriages and some related issues. Globally, economic and social ties between nations have increased dramatically since World War II. As a result, more and more individuals are working, studying and traveling abroad. This marked increase in international mobility has also given rise to an increase in the number of international marriages (Cottrell 1990; Imamura 1986). For example, the number of foreign spouses entering the United States annually has increased from 27,761 in 1960 to 145,247 in 1994 (U.S. Immigration and Naturalization …

The Relationship Of Perceptual Learning Modality Preference And The Use Of An On-Line Learning Environment To Achieve Non-Technology Related Course Objectives, Patricia M. Nickel

Student Work

The purpose of this thesis study was to explore the possibility of a relationship between perceptual learning modality preference and efficacy in the use of an on-line learning environment to achieve non-technology related course objectives. Subjects were 30 adult students enrolled in the CaseNET course administered by the University of Virgina. Two research questions were explored: 1.) Is there a difference in feelings of student efficacy, in a course which uses Internet technology to achieve non-technology related course objectives, for auditory, visual, and tactile learners? 2.) Is there a difference in the use of student adaptation techniques for tactile, visual, …

A Forgotten Enemy: Omaha Encounters The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Gary Gernhart Dec 1998

A Forgotten Enemy: Omaha Encounters The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Gary Gernhart

Student Work

Influenza, or the flu as it is commonly called, is considered nothing more than a mild physical nuisance that requires little more than bed rest and aspirin. In 1918, however, this acute respiratory ailment elicited a greatly different response from the ordinary citizen. A deadly and highly contagious strain of the influenza virus emerged in 1918 that encompassed the globe in a matter of months. Although the 1918 influenza pandemic killed over twenty-two million people world-wide, of which over seven-hundred thousand were Americans, the deadly pandemic is rarely acknowledged as a catastrophic event. This study investigates Omaha, Nebraska's response to …

Computer-Mediated Communication And Gender: An Examination Of Two Internet Newsgroups., Teresa A. Paulsen

Student Work

This thesis examines computer-mediated communication (CMC) and gender. Specifically, the examination focused on two newsgroups found online on the Internet in an effort to discover differences between females in a female-only discussion group and females in a female-minority discussion group. The study looked for differences primarily in regard to female-patterned message behavior. Seven different female patterned language categories were used in a content analysis of 100 messages from each group. Differences were examined overall, and according to each language category. In addition, the study sought to determine if message length differed between the two groups. Statistical analysis showed a significant …

The Portrayal Of Women In 1996 General Appeal Magazine Advertisements., Anne Fairchild Mcvey

Student Work

This thesis looked at the portrayal of women in advertising in general appeal magazines, particularly Life Magazine, Reader's Digest, and Vanity Fair. This study's objective was to see if women were still being portrayal similarly to past portrayals, which tended to depict women stereotypically. The literature review states that women are commonly portrayed as sex objects, concerned with looks, decorative, and domestic. In more recent ads, women are also being portrayed as nontraditionally and as working. This study is a content analysis and looked at all the ads, that contained at least one woman, and quantitatively analyzed their portrayal. The …

Focusing on gender and social responsibility, a qualitative analysis was made regarding sexism in these two newsweeklies. Clark was the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson trial. Using Pingree et al. (1976) measurement of sexism in media; the news reporting on Clark's professional life was found to be similar to that of the male attorneys. But when comparing appearance and personal life, Clark was unequal to the male attorneys. She …

Root Morphology, Distribution Of Mycorrhizae, And Nutrient Status Of The Terrestrial Orchid Spiranthes Cernua., Veronique Simone Pileri

Student Work

The rhizosphere is a complex of biotic and abiotic factors and their interactions. It includes the soil, the micro- and megafauna, and a variety of autotrophic species. The goal of this study is to understand the belowground dynamics of the terrestrial orchid, Sniranthes cemua. through the characterization of soil nutrients, root system morphology, and mycorrhizal infection. Interrelationships among the soil, the mycorrhizae and S. cemua may explain the role of mycorrhizae in adult chlorophyllous orchids as well as the influence of soil nutrients on mycorrhizae. Understanding mycorrhizal relationships, will also contribute to the conservation and reestablishment of threatened and endangered …

Priviledged Servants: Community Service In Private High Schools, Ellen Clarissa Reynolds Dec 1998

Priviledged Servants: Community Service In Private High Schools, Ellen Clarissa Reynolds

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Traditionally, the school has been the primary role model for citizenship development. One method schools may use to convey the roles and models of involved citizens is through community service experiences.

Public and private schools throughout the United States include community service as part of the curriculum and/or extracurricular activities. Service promotes responsibility, a caring ethic, and growth of community. Service can improve society through individuals working together and forming a bond with one another. Service provides opportunities to witness the diverse cultures of society. Through service, students may experience affective and cognitive development, form relationships with community members, and …

A Picture's Worth: Teaching Religion And Film, Irena S. M. Makarushka Phd

Journal of Religion & Film

I believe the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words. As Berger claims, "seeing comes before words." Pictures, particularly the moving kind, have always fascinated me. Consequently, for over a decade, I have included films among the required readings in my courses in the hope of encouraging students to experience films as religiously pertinent texts that invite critical reading. Convinced as I am that we live in a highly visual culture, I am equally convinced that films, more often than not, elude the critical eye. In my experience, students tend to: 1) see films merely as entertainment; …

Seduction By Visual Image, Barbara De Concini Dec 1998

Seduction By Visual Image, Barbara De Concini

Journal of Religion & Film

Increasingly, professors of religion are using movies, both fiction films and documentaries, in their classrooms. Reasons for the attractiveness of the medium as a pedagogical tool abound: ready availability, immediacy of impact, congeniality for young audiences who are more attuned to images than to words, to name just a few. But how many of us who use texts check our critical tools at the movie house door and settle for a credulity vis-a-vis the visual image, a credulity that we otherwise find unacceptable in the classroom? We know that history, no less than fiction (even if differently from fiction) is …

Teaching Field Of Dreams As Cosmogonic Myth, Mara E. Donaldson Dec 1998

Teaching Field Of Dreams As Cosmogonic Myth, Mara E. Donaldson

Journal of Religion & Film

Trotting away from the camera toward the boundary between baseball diamond and surrounding corn, Shoeless Joe Jackson, himself part of American baseball myth, turns to ask: "Hey, is this heaven?" "No," replies Ray Kinsella, who has turned part of his farm into his field of dreams, "It's Iowa." Both the line and the movie from which it comes, Field of Dreams (1989), have become a staple in my "Religion and Modern Culture" course, providing a teachable occasion for linking popular culture, the religious category of myth, and the task of critical thinking in religious studies.

Religion And Film: Capturing The Imagination, Gordon Matties Dec 1998

Religion And Film: Capturing The Imagination, Gordon Matties

Journal of Religion & Film

Most of my students watch more movies than they read books. Some students choose not to register for Tuesday evening courses because Tuesday is "cheap movie night." Movies have captured the imagination, even if M. Darrol Bryant overstates the matter, suggesting that "the act of going to the movies is a participation in a central ritual of this culture's spiritual life." (106) Movies sometimes seem even to do our imagining for us, either fueling or disabling our vigorously imaginative, critical and constructive engagement with religious and theological issues.

In my course, "Religion, Film and Popular Culture", I try to offer …

Religion And Popular Movies, Conrad E. Ostwalt Dec 1998

Religion And Popular Movies, Conrad E. Ostwalt

Journal of Religion & Film

A few years ago, I was lecturing on John's "Revelation" in a New Testament course when a student approached me after class with a question. He wanted to know if I had seen the movie The Seventh Sign and if it was based on the Christian Apocalypse. Unaware that Demi Moore had just appeared in a movie by that title, I assumed the student was referring to Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal and answered him accordingly. He quickly corrected me and challenged me to see The Seventh Sign. I watched the movie soon after that, and although it was …
