Impact Of A Supervisor's Use Of Compliance Gaining Strategies On Perceptions Of The Supervisor's Communication Competence., Matthew J. Witzke

This research is an attempt to explore the relationship between the use of compliance gaining strategies and communication competence. In four video taped scenarios involving a supervisor using-a positive or negative compliance gaining strategy on a subordinate, a total of 98 respondents answered a questionnaire that included the Rater of Alter Competence (RAC) and demographic questions. The results of this study supported the notion that those who use positive compliance gaining strategies will be perceived to have a higher level of communication competence than those who use negative compliance gaining strategies. As the cultivation and agenda setting/priming theories argued, the media have the power to shape audiences’ behaviors, realities, beliefs, morals, and myths about issues like sexual harassment. This thesis focuses on the coverage of seven watershed events in Native American history by four Omaha, Nebraska newspapers. Covering the years between 1868 and 1891, the thesis looks at the use of stereotypes by the newspapers as well as the overall quality of the reporting in terms of balance, accuracy, judgement and prediction.

Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Story Books, Joan A. Bucy

This study assess male and female sex-role stereotyping in children's storybooks. Ten Caldecott and 10 Golden Sower Book selections from 1986 to 1995 are examined for the number of female and male lead characters; occupations, gender roles and personality traits of the main characters; the realism of character roles and storylines; and the contributions that the main character made to society. The analyst indicates that there are fewer female than male characters in the story books, that lead characters are often shown in traditional occupations and gender roles, and that female lead characters are generally shown in exotic roles and …
