Relationship Between Life Change Events And Communication Apprehension, Elaine Bylund

This research investigates relationships between communication apprehension (CA) and life change events, using college students at a Midwestern university. Instruments used were the Personal Report o f Communication Apprehension-24 (PRCA- 24) which measured CA, both overall and in four subareas, and a modified version of the Adolescent Life Change Event Questionnaire (ALCEQ), which records life change events during formative years and past year before being questioned.

No significant relationships were found between the overall scores of the two instruments in this study, although demographic information showed that the younger college students reported more public speaking apprehension than the older groups. …

As the youth crime rate continues to climb in the United States, concerned parents and government officials wonder how much television is influencing our nation's children. Research most often reported by the media says that violent action shown on television can cause the same kind of action by children who watch those kinds of programs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers children's television program has specifically been under attack by parents. Photojournalists make daily decisions about hot to shoot a new story, and what images to broadcast to the public. Some of these decisions are routine, only dependent on the photojournalist’s individual storytelling style. But some of these decisions fall into the gray area of ethics. This thesis surveyed 135 television photojournalists about their ethical beliefs and practices.

The concept of public journalism has evolved only within the last five years, but already it has made an impact on journalist and scholars alike. Public journalism is a movement within newspapers that is trying to reconnect citizens with their newspapers, communities and political life. Public journalism is also a theory that encourages journalist to break from the conventional idea of detachment and show concern for whether public life is good.
