What happens when you combine archivists and non-archivists with good intentions, unprocessed collections, institutional push to seek grants, competing pressures and deadlines? At the University of Nebraska at Omaha Archives and Special Collections, this familiar scenario occurred during a period focused on prioritizing Latinx collections including personal papers, Office of Latino and Latin American Studies Records, and oral histories. During our presentation, we will share how archivists attempted to wrangle multiple funding streams to meet processing, outreach, and digitization goals while internal and external forces took a toll. These included stakeholder expectations, the complexities of student employment, campus events, and …

Pixels And Propaganda: A Primer On Gaming, Gaming-Adjacent Platforms, And Extremism, Madison Scott, Emma Theobald, Alexis L. D'Amato, Joel Elson, Samuel T. Hunter

Reports, Projects, and Research

The intersection of gaming and artificial intelligence with extremism raises complex challenges that demand careful consideration. While video games can serve as a platform for entertainment, social interaction, and skill development, these virtual realms can potentially amplify extremist ideologies. Immersive gaming environments, coupled with sophisticated AI algorithms, may facilitate the creation and spread of radicalizing content or serve as an extremist recruitment ground. Preserving positive aspects of gaming and reducing extremist risk requires collaboration from the gaming industry and community, AI developers, cybersecurity experts, and policymakers.

Snapshot Of U.S. Federal Cases Against Violent Incels, Seamus Hughes, Camden Carmichael

Reports, Projects, and Research

“Incel” and “Involuntary Celibate” refer to members of a group founded on the belief that society unjustly denies them sexual or romantic attention, to which they believe they are entitled. Incels are primarily an online community composed of individuals - most of whom are men - who blame political or social movements, such as feminism, for empowering others to deny them romantic or sexual attention. Reports, Projects, and Research

This review attempts to prepare the Homeland Security Enterprise for the impending use of AI in generation of novel and malign threats.

AI broadly refers to technology that can infer patterns from external data sources with numerous subfields including machine learning, logical agents, generative AI, and robotics.

The benefits of AI may be overshadowed by potential harms such as AI-based autonomous weaponry and malign AI interferences such as disruption of political information integrity.

The intersection of artificial intelligence and malevolent creativity involves using technology to generate and implement novel ideas to cause harm.

Locally Tight Programs, Jorge Fandinno, Vladimir Lifschitz, Nathan Temple

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Program completion is a translation from the language of logic programs into the language of first-order theories. Its original definition has been extended to programs that include integer arithmetic, accept input, and distinguish between output predicates and auxiliary predicates. For tight programs, that generalization of completion is known to match the stable model semantics, which is the basis of answer set programming. We show that the tightness condition in this theorem can be replaced by a less restrictive “local tightness” requirement. From this fact we conclude that the proof assistant ANTHEM-P2P can be used to verify equivalence between locally tight …
