Use Of The Simplified Diet Method To Improve Metabolic Control Among Teens And Adults With Phenylketonuria: A Mixed Methods Approach, Jill Skrabal

Phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency, commonly known as phenylketonuria (PKU), is an inborn error of metabolism that causes the accumulation of phenylalanine and results in intellectual disability if left untreated. The primary treatment for PKU is a lifelong diet that selectively restricts phenylalanine intake and is aimed at keeping blood phenylalanine in the therapeutic range of 120-360 μmol/L. Qualitative research in PKU is limited, but research has stressed the challenges individuals face in following a diet so different than their peers Previous attempts in Europe and Australia have been successful in allowing free use of certain fruits and vegetables, as well …

This capstone project produced a qualitative research design and analysis plan for youth focus groups as part of a Quality Improvement project at OneWorld Community Health Center (OWCHC) School-Based Health Center (SBHC) located at Bryan High School (BHS) in a program called BEARS. The intended use of this project is to serve as a reference guide for BEARS program planners to utilize as part of the data collection and analysis processes. The purpose for collecting qualitative data for this project is three-fold. 1. On the occasion of the Centennial of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, it is most fitting that the Centennial Committee of the Medical Center reissue this quite marvelous autobiography by Dr. Francis A. Long. A Prairie Doctor of the Eighties is a valuable book, both in the literary and the historical sense. It is thus my pleasure to provide a Preface to a book about a man I knew and admired.
