Exploring 3d Data Reuse And Repurposing Through Procedural Modeling, Rachel Opitz, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Greg Tunink Jan 2022

Exploring 3d Data Reuse And Repurposing Through Procedural Modeling, Rachel Opitz, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Karin Dalziel, Jessica Dussault, Greg Tunink

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Most contemporary 3D data used in archaeological research and heritage management have been created through ‘reality capture,’ the recording of the physical features of extant archaeological objects, structures, and landscapes using technologies such as laser scanning and photogrammetry (Garstki 2020, ch.2; Magnani et al. 2020). A smaller quantity of data are generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects, and even fewer data are generated through procedural modeling, the rapid prototyping of multi-component threedimensional (3D) models from a set of rules (Figure 8.1.). It is unsurprising therefore that in archaeology and heritage, efforts around digital 3D …

Digitization Of World Heritage Sites Of Iran As A Tool For Facilitating Online Access During Worldwide Pandemic: Case Study Of Pasargadae World Heritage Site, Farzaneh Gerami, Nadim Akhtar Khan, Zohreh Hosseini Jan 2022

Digitization Of World Heritage Sites Of Iran As A Tool For Facilitating Online Access During Worldwide Pandemic: Case Study Of Pasargadae World Heritage Site, Farzaneh Gerami, Nadim Akhtar Khan, Zohreh Hosseini

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Purpose

Cultural heritage digitization facilitates the preservation of culturally valuable objects, entities, or items into a digital form allowing more comprehensive and concurrent access to such objects. It becomes more significant for overcoming the constraints associated with physical access, especially during turmoil, disasters, and pandemics like COVID-19, where physical interactions are almost restricted. Covid-19 restrictions and resultant social distancing protocols impacted nearly every facet of human life. Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums, and heritage sites across the globe were also affected as they were closed for the general public.

Therefore, the study explores the importance of making diverse cultural heritage information …

Six Septembers: Mathematics For The Humanist, Patrick Juola, Stephen Ramsay Apr 2017

Six Septembers: Mathematics For The Humanist, Patrick Juola, Stephen Ramsay

Zea E-Books Collection

Scholars of all stripes are turning their attention to materials that represent enormous opportunities for the future of humanistic inquiry. The purpose of this book is to impart the concepts that underlie the mathematics they are likely to encounter and to unfold the notation in a way that removes that particular barrier completely. This book is a primer for developing the skills to enable humanist scholars to address complicated technical material with confidence. This book, to put it plainly, is concerned with the things that the author of a technical article knows, but isn’t saying. Like any field, mathematics operates …

Interim Report, Hd-51897-14, Image Analysis For Archival Discovery (Aida), Elizabeth M. Lorang, Leen-Kiat Soh

CDRH Grant Reports

In the first six months of work on "Image Analysis for Archival Discovery," the project team has made significant strides toward our goal of analyzing more than 7 million newspaper pages in Chronicling America for poetic content. Although we have made some adjustments to our work plan, we remain on task to perform the major research outlined in our proposal. Activities undertaken from June–November 2014:
• Preparation of training set images (completed)
• Processing of initial data sets to extract/derive features from image data (completed)
• Development of algorithms for describing image characteristics (completed, but future iterations/revisions are likely)
• …

Significant Themes In 19th-Century Literature, Matthew L. Jockers, David Mimno Aug 2012

Significant Themes In 19th-Century Literature, Matthew L. Jockers, David Mimno

Department of English: Faculty Publications

External factors such as author gender, author nationality, and date of publication affect both the choice of literary themes in novels and the expression of those themes, but the extent of this association is difficult to quantify. In this work, we apply statistical methods to identify and extract hundreds of "topics" from a corpus of 3,346 works of 19th-century British, Irish, and American fiction. We use these topics as a measurable, data-driven proxy for literary themes. External factors may predict fluctuations in the use of themes and the individual word choices within themes. We use topics to measure the evidence …

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller Apr 2011

Using Textual Features To Predict Popular Content On Digg, Paul H. Miller

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the past few years, collaborative rating sites, such as Netflix, Digg and Stumble, have become increasingly prevalent sites for users to find trending content. I used various data mining techniques to study Digg, a social news site, to examine the influence of content on popularity. What influence does content have on popularity, and what influence does content have on users’ decisions? Overwhelmingly, prior studies have consistently shown that predicting popularity based on content is difficult and maybe even inherently impossible. The same submission can have multiple outcomes and content neither determines popularity, nor individual user decisions. My results show …

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell Jan 2009

The Willa Cather Archive In The Classroom, Andrew Jewell

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

This essay discusses many of the opportunities for teachers I believe are present in the Willa Cather Archive (http://cather.unl.edu), particularly in the way the Archive makes new materials available or older materials available in a new way. Additionally, this essay suggests some of the implications of the Archive’s digital presentation of resources. However, the place of digital scholarship in academic life is still evolving, and students and teachers are just getting accustomed to using the form. Given this circumstance, many of my thoughts are inconclusive, observations based upon preliminary understandings into how this resource affects our classrooms. I avoid confident …
