Rethinking Digital Editing Practices To Better Address Non-Canonical Texts, Amanda A Gailey

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

This article stems from my recent work on Race and Children’s Literature of the Gilded Age (RCLGA),1 a digital archive that aims to provide a heavily annotated resource for scholars and students of literature, history, African American studies, visual communication, and education to examine how adults wanted children to think about race during the era of Jim Crow. I edit the archive with Gerald Early, Professor of Modern letters, English, African studies, and African American studies at Washington University in St. Louis, and D. B. Dowd, Professor of Communication Design and American Culture Studies, also at Washington University. When complete, …

Editing Harriet Beecher Stowe’S Uncle Tom’S Cabin And The Fluid Text Of Race, Wesley Raabe Jan 2011

Editing Harriet Beecher Stowe’S Uncle Tom’S Cabin And The Fluid Text Of Race, Wesley Raabe

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

I suspect that many scholars begin to edit a work by accident: I begin with the anecdote of how I became an accidental editor of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in academic year 2002. I had read not a single work by Harriet Beecher Stowe when I was admitted to the Ph.D. program at the University of Virginia. During my first semester, I was often at Alderman Library’s Special Collections floor to subject a copy of Delariviér Manley’s Memoirs of Europe (1710) to bibliographical analysis. I was reading Stowe’s work in another course, was already in Alderman for the Manley work, and …

Review Of Irish Immigrants In The Land Of Canaan: Letters And Memoirs From Colonial And Revolutionary America, 1675–1815. Written And Edited By Kerby A. Miller, Arnold Schrier, Bruce D. Boling, And David N. Doyle., James M. Perry Jan 2010

Perry

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The Irish Diaspora and the influx of Irish immigrants to North America have received much attention in recent decades. The multitudes of Irish- Catholics arriving in the middle nineteenth century in the aftermath of Ireland’s Potato Famine have received the majority of this scholarly attention. In Irish Immigrants in the Land of Canaan, Kerby A. Miller, Arnold Schrier, Bruce D. Boling, and David N. Doyle tackle an often overlooked aspect of the Irish migration to North America, the largely Protestant immigrants arriving before the American Revolution and in its immediate aftermath. Using letters, and occasionally other sources such as personal …

Review Of The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume I, 1805–1813 And The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume Ii, 1814–1821. Edited And With An Introduction By Rowena Mcclinton; Preface By Chad Smith., Angela Pulley Hudson

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Noted historian William G. McLoughlin once observed that in addition to mirroring U.S. political structures, the nineteenth-century Cherokee Nation shared two other trends with the young Republic: slavery and Christianity.1 Indeed, even as Cherokee people fought to retain their eastern lands in the first decades of the nineteenth century, they often adopted the ideologies of the land-hungry Americans they tried to resist. Few sources document this complex and contradictory process more vividly than The Moravian Springplace Mission to the Cherokees. Rarely do Cherokee, Christian, and slave histories appear in such intimate relation to one another. In the secondary works on …

Scholarly Editing As A Dissertation Topic: Philological Perspectives On Documentary Editing In Theory And Practice, Harry Lonnroth Jan 2007

Scholarly Editing As A Dissertation Topic: Philological Perspectives On Documentary Editing In Theory And Practice, Harry Lonnroth

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The doctoral dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages that I duly defended in public at the University of Tampere, Finland, was a so-called philological edition3 for the period of 1678-1695 of the judgment book of the town of Ekenas,4 a Swedish-speaking town in southern Finland:" The scholarly edition includes philological commentary and indices for persons, places, subjects and cases. It constitutes a legal-historical document, which, I hope, will prove to have a long lasting philological and historical source value in both the Finnish and the Scandinavian perspective. (; Before I go on to discuss in …

Trials And Tribulations: As Found In The Journals Of Samuel Kirkland, Christine Sternberg Patrick Oct 2005

Trials And Tribulations: As Found In The Journals Of Samuel Kirkland, Christine Sternberg Patrick

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

By day I edit the papers of George Washington, one of those increasingly popular dead white men. But on nights and weekends I spend my time with Samuel Kirkland, a not-so-popular dead white man whom I would classify as above-average. I was first introduced to Kirkland in the 1980s, and shortly thereafter I made him the topic of my dissertation. Although some might describe him as a "dour Presbyterian," I find him fascinating.

By now I am sure that most readers are wondering, who is Samuel Kirkland? and, why is he above-average? So let me briefly answer these questions before …

Documentary Editing--Cumulative Index, Twenty-Fifth Anniversary 1979-2003

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The following cumulative index (Documentary Editing 25:4 [Winter 2003]) reflects theories and practices that have changed in the past couple of decades as represented in the annual indexes of the journal (1979-2003) and also the 10th anniversary cumulative index in the December issue of 1989. Major inconsistencies and omissions have been corrected in the current version; differences in indexing decisions remain.

Mack And Ilona S. Mack., Lance Schachterle

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Motivated by his interest in Francis Lieber's importance in the hIstory of the University of South Carolina, as well as Lieber's reflections on European works of art, Charles R. Mack, professor of Art History at South Carolina, with his wife Ilona S. Mack, has edited from manuscript the journal Lieber kept for much of his European "sabbatical" of 1844-45. The extended title provided by the editors advances their views of the significance of Lieber's journal and implies a potential readership for their text. Indeed, the editorial claim that Lieber was "one of the nineteenth-century's most influential minds" is bold. More …

Edition And Facsimile Publishing The Correspondence Of Carl Linnaeus On The World Wide Web, Tomas Anfält

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Carl Linnaeus, or Carl von Linne as he was called after his ennoblement in 1762, is Sweden's most famous scientist. Linnaeus is primarily known for having created the nomenclature for plants, published for the first time in Species plantarum in 1753. Born in 1707 in southern Sweden, he studied at the University of Lund and later at Uppsala where he became professor of medicine in 1741. Before his academic appointment, he had a remarkable international career resulting from the introduction of his Systema naturae, published in its first edition in 1735 in Amsterdam. Within less than a decade, most of …

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall Sep 2001

Style Matters: Applying--Egads!--Theory To Documentary Editing, Tracy Duvall

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Historical editors rarely cite theory to justify particular editorial practices. Instead, they usually make appeals to common sense and personal experience. Of course, "eyeballing it" is legitimate, but documentary editors should inform themselves about linguistic and literary theory to create better-informed policies for transcription and translation. Increasing theoretical sophistication will lead editors to pay more attention to reproducing an author's style. (The hyphenation of re-producing is meant to remind the reader that transcription and translation are creative acts [thus, produce] but that this creativity is constrained by the goal of fidelity to the source text [thus, re-].)

This article will …

The Other Millennium: Review Of Yesterdays Future: The Twentieth Century Begins. Michael E. Stevens, Ed., George W. Geib

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

The widespread public interest and accompanying media hype surrounding the millennium celebrations of December 31, 1999, produced several interesting projects among historians and documentary editors. One of those is this slender volume, published in 1999 by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Yesterday's Future uses the pen and eye of the print media of a century ago to look at one state's responses to the coming of a new century. Intended as part of a series, "Voices of the Wisconsin Past," the book is a selection of nearly one hundred reports and opinions offered to Wisconsin newspaper readers a hundred …

The Correspondence Of Benjamin Frankiin And His Grandson B. F. Bache, Karen C. Duval Mar 2000

The Correspondence Of Benjamin Frankiin And His Grandson B. F. Bache, Karen C. Duval

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

When Benjamin Franklin left Philadelphia for France in October 1776, he took along his sixteen-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin, who would remain in Paris, serving as his secretary, for the entire eight-and-a-half-year mission. Also in tow was another grandson and Temple's cousin, Benjamin Franklin Bache. Benny, as he was usually called, was born in August 1769. No letters survive to indicate why Benny, who had just turned seven, was being sent abroad. His departure, following the death of his sister Sarah at eight and a half months, must have been an emotional one. But high aspirations for the young boy's …

The Journals Of Lewis And Clark: Almost Home, Gary E. Moulton

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

My entry into the world of Lewis and Clark was quite indirect. My wife Faye saw an ad for the editorial position in a professional journal in 1978 and encouraged me to apply. That I was to be unemployed the next year was a compelling incentive. My professional interests in the American West, Native Americans, and historical editing gave me an edge. In fact, I was just completing editing the papers of Chief John Ross of the Cherokees, supported for four years by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives.

Here Comes Tomorrow--And It's Full Of Challenges, David R. Chesnutt

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979-2011)

Documentary editors have put technology to good use in the last twenty years. Technology has helped us:

• gain better intellectual control over our documents

• produce more accurate and reliable texts

• find information that enhances our annotation • provide better intellectual access through our indexes

In spite of the wide array of software available, most projects have never gone beyond word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Here and there the landscape is dotted with a database program or two. And a few hardy souls even took on the mainframe and used it to create indexes and bibliographies, to compare texts, …
