The Politics Of Abundance: American Philanthropy And The Political Economy Of Food In The Twentieth Century, Elizabeth Berit Barrs Jan 2023

The Politics Of Abundance: American Philanthropy And The Political Economy Of Food In The Twentieth Century, Elizabeth Berit Barrs

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

“The Politics of Abundance: American Philanthropy and the Political Economy of Food in the Twentieth Century” uses food aid as a lens to understand how philanthropy became a significant new force in the twentieth-century political economy, both in the US and in the projection of American power abroad. I argue that US-based international food philanthropy joined with the state and the full breadth of the American food industry to structure the political economy of food in the twentieth century and to export it globally, impacting how much of the world produces and consumes food. Voluntary agencies and foundations provided a …

A Capitalist's Social Gospel: Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus And The Promise Of Upward Mobility, 1875-1921, Joshua Pretzer Jan 2019

A Capitalist's Social Gospel: Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus And The Promise Of Upward Mobility, 1875-1921, Joshua Pretzer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus was a preacher who began his ministry in 1875 as a little-known itinerant Methodist in rural Ohio. Within two decades, he became one of America’s most influential religious figures with a popular style and message of hope for the future. This paper examines the mission of this pulpiteer, who believed Jesus and industrial capitalism could solve the problems of labor conflict, poverty, and sin as the kingdom of God was gradually realized on earth. Where many social gospelers challenged the interests of capital to varying degrees, Gunsaulus was both the businessman’s firm defender and an advocate for …

"Why Wait Until They Commit A Crime?": Moral Imbecility And The Problem Of Knowledge In Progressive America, 1880-1920, Chelsea D. Chamberlain Jan 2015

"Why Wait Until They Commit A Crime?": Moral Imbecility And The Problem Of Knowledge In Progressive America, 1880-1920, Chelsea D. Chamberlain

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Focusing on the forty-year period from 1880 to 1920, this thesis explores moral imbecility--the lack of a moral sense at birth--as a contested medical diagnosis that embodied many of modernizing America's greatest fears. It argues that moral imbecility played a pivotal role in facilitating the emergence of several hallmarks of modern America. The diagnosis legitimated medical experts’ far-reaching cultural authority, encouraged the rise of a surveillance society, and secured the growth of a medicalized bureaucratic state responsible for institutionalizing hundreds of thousands of people. As a potent medico-cultural threat based upon new and disputed knowledge claims, it became an important …

Young Sceptics: The Role Of Youth Voters In Increasing Euroscepticism, Chase J. Ellinger Jan 2015

Young Sceptics: The Role Of Youth Voters In Increasing Euroscepticism, Chase J. Ellinger

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

“Eurosceptic” or anti-European Union (EU) political parties are notably gaining traction in EU elections across the political bloc. The continued importance of the Eurosceptic phenomenon was most recently evidenced in the pan-EU elections of May 2014, when parties like the UK Independence Party and France’s Front National gained scores of seats – and, therefore, influence – in the European Parliament (EP). This trend is disturbing to pro-EU politicians and Europhiles alike. Based on my review of existing literature, however, there is a notable lack of research into the role of youth voters in electing these political parties. In this paper, …

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay Feb 2010

Socio-Cultural Dimensions Of Cluster Vs. Single Home Photovoltaic Solar Energy Systems In Rural Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the socio-cultural dimensions of obstacles facing solar photovoltaic projects in two villages in rural Nepal. The study was conducted in Humla District, Nepal, one of the most remote and impoverished regions of the country. There are no roads in the district, homes lack running water and villagers’ health suffers from high levels of indoor air pollution from open cooking/heating fires and the smoky torches traditionally burned for light. The introduction of solar energy is important to these villagers, as it removes one major source of indoor air pollution from homes and provides brighter light than the traditional …

An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of Shortages Of Indian Teachers As Described By Tribal College Leaders In Teacher Preparation, Cynthia Gail O'Dell Jan 2010

An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of Shortages Of Indian Teachers As Described By Tribal College Leaders In Teacher Preparation, Cynthia Gail O'Dell

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In Montana, less than 3% of K-12 teachers are American Indian (Montana Office of Public Instruction, 2009). The lack of Indian teachers, which was the problem identified for this dissertation, is of great concern to educational leaders. The shortage of Native American teachers can be correlated to problems in the education of K-12 students (Reyhner & Eder, 2004) as evident in the data on achievement gaps, dropout rates and participation in higher education. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of tribal college leaders in preparing Indian pre-service teachers through the lens of the phenomenon of …

“The Sort . . . Of People To Which I Belong”: Elizabeth Gaskell And The Middle Class, Allison Masters Jan 2009

“The Sort . . . Of People To Which I Belong”: Elizabeth Gaskell And The Middle Class, Allison Masters

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this thesis, I examine Elizabeth Gaskell’s development as a middle-class author, which is a position that most scholars take for granted. Moving away from traditional Marxist readings and drawing on revisionist class studies, I reconsider Gaskell as the typical bourgeois woman of her era by looking at her relationship with the middle class and its ideals over the course of her career. Overall, her large body of work reveals an increasing awareness of, and willingness to engage with the divisions within the middle class. In turn, as Gaskell explores such tensions and negotiates middle-class boundaries and values in her …

The Original Meaning Of The Establishment Clause, Robert G. Natelson Jan 2005

The Original Meaning Of The Establishment Clause, Robert G. Natelson

Faculty Law Review Articles

The article builds on Establishment Clause studies conducted by Noah Feldman and Philip Hamburger, which utilize ratification materials to explain the founding generation's free exercise ideology and the emergence of the Establishment Clause from that ideology. In this article, the author demonstrates how the "religion terms" of the Gentlemen's Agreement clarifies the meaning of the Establishment Clause so that persistent interpretive difficulties largely disappear.

Health Needs In Two Ethnic Communities Of Humla District, Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay Jul 2002

Health Needs In Two Ethnic Communities Of Humla District, Nepal, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This report summarizes findings from a primary health care baseline study conducted in September and October of 1999, in upper Humla district, Nepal. This study establishes measures of health conditions in Humla; and constitutes a baseline against which progress in improving the health services and conditions for local people may be measured. This report is an integral piece of the process of primary health care development in Humla, a remote region with scant record of health statistics at the village level. In addition to the Ministry of Health and its staff and partners, a number of NGOs are working in …
