Purpose—The purpose of this study was to use a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to translate the original Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to be age and culturally specific for American Indian (AI) youth.

Methods—Tribally enrolled members on 2 Montana Indian reservations conducted focus groups and interviews to discuss community members’ perspectives of factors that encouraged or were barriers to healthy diet and exercise behaviors in AI youth. In total, 31 community members, aged 10 to 68 years old, participated in 4 focus groups and 14 individual interviews. Participants were self-identified as elder, cultural expert, tribal health worker, educator, …

Motivational Interviewing For Smoking Cessation In College Students: A Group Randomized Controlled Trial, Kari J. Harris, Delwyn Catley, Glenn E. Good, Nikole J. Cronk, Solomon W. Harrar, Karen B. Williams

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Objective—To examine the efficacy of four individually-delivered Motivational Interviewing counseling sessions for smoking cessation versus a matched intensity comparison condition.

Method—From 2006–2009, students attending college in the Midwest smoking at least 1 of 30 days were recruited regardless of their interest in quitting. 30 fraternities and sororities were randomized, resulting in 452 participants.

Results—No significant differences were found for 30-day cessation between treatment and comparison at end of treatment (31.4% vs 28%, OR=1.20, 95% CI .72,1.99) or at follow-up (20.4% vs 24.6%, OR=.78, 95% CI .50,1.22). Predictors of cessation at follow-up, regardless of condition, included more sessions …

I Miss The Hungry Years: Coping With Abundance, Albert Borgmann Oct 2010

I Miss The Hungry Years: Coping With Abundance, Albert Borgmann

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Information technology is a marvel of ingenuity and engineering. Itʹs been widely admired and used; itʹs being advanced by inventiveness and competition; and itʹs being promoted by politicians and education experts. But there has also been research and discussion of the liabilities of information technology. The abundance of information has not, as one might have expected, made people generally more attentive and knowledgeable. On the contrary, distraction and ignorance are spreading. That has to worry people in higher education.

Adaptation Of A Lay Health Advisor Model As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy In A Clinical Trial Of College Student Smokers, Shiloh Jordan Varvel, Nikole J. Cronk, Kari Jo Harris, Anne B. Scott Sep 2010

Adaptation Of A Lay Health Advisor Model As A Recruitment And Retention Strategy In A Clinical Trial Of College Student Smokers, Shiloh Jordan Varvel, Nikole J. Cronk, Kari Jo Harris, Anne B. Scott

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

This study describes and provides results from a process evaluation of a lay health advisor (LHA) model to enhance participation in a clinical trial of the effectiveness of motivational interviewing on smoking cessation in college fraternity and sorority members. The implementation of the model had two phases: (a) the selection and training of LHAs as liaisons between research staff and participants and (b) LHAs’ roles in recruitment and retention. Perceptions of the LHA model were explored using survey questionnaires. Trial participants (N = 118) and LHAs (N = 8) were generally satisfied with the model and identified LHAs as helpful …

Women Belonging In The Social Worlds Of Graduate Mathematics, Abbe H. Herzig Jul 2010

Women Belonging In The Social Worlds Of Graduate Mathematics, Abbe H. Herzig

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The participation of women in post-graduate mathematics still lags substantially behind that of men. Drawing upon sociocultural theories of learning, I argue that success in graduate school necessitates learning mathematical content, participating in mathematical practices, and developing a sense of belonging in mathematics. Using an institutional ethnography approach, I interviewed 12 women graduate students from three mathematics departments in the U.S. to document their experiences within the social relations of graduate mathematics. They described both intrinsic and extrinsic obstacles to belonging, including a tension between their desire to belong and their needs to distance themselves from what they perceived to …

Internal And External Comments On Course Evaluations And Their Relationship To Course Grades, Hilary Smith Risser Jul 2010

Internal And External Comments On Course Evaluations And Their Relationship To Course Grades, Hilary Smith Risser

The Mathematics Enthusiast

The validity of student evaluations of courses and the relationship between evaluations and course outcomes has frequently been examined. Since many course evaluations give students an opportunity to provide answers to open-ended questions in addition to giving Likert scale ratings, it is important to understand the relationship between these responses and course outcomes. This study examined the relationship between student responses to open ended questions (specifically whether they attributed their achievement to factors within their control or factors not within their control) and their outcomes in the course. The results of the study indicate that students that identified external factors …

World War I And The "System Of 1896", Robert P. Saldin Jul 2010

World War I And The "System Of 1896", Robert P. Saldin

Political Science Faculty Publications

Realignment theory has long offered the primary framework for understanding American political history, particularly as it relates to the party system. The ‘‘System of 1896’’ is central to the theory and holds that William McKinley’s victory in that year ushered in a Republican-dominated era lasting until Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election in 1932. The 10 years of partial—and six years of total—Democratic control of Congress and the White House (1910–20) during this 36-year stretch (1896–1932) remains an anomaly among realignment theorists. I conduct content analyses of Democratic and Republican party documents and media commentary and find that World War I …

Economic Impact And Skier Characteristics: Montana , Norma P. Nickerson, Kara Grau

Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications

Seven ski resorts in Montana participated in the first economic impact of the alpine ski industry in Montana. Extrapolating the data to all Montana resorts shows that 35 percent of skiers are nonresidents who contribute a combined impact of $83 million dollars to the state. Nonresidents spent $1,252/ski trip/group while in Montana. Residents spent an average of $138/ski trip/group. More nonresidents came from Alberta, Minnesota, Washington and North Dakota than any other state. Residents traveled 75 miles on average to access the ski area.

Correlation And Studies Of Habitat Selection: Problem, Red Herring Or Opportunity?, John Fieberg, Jason Matthiopoulos, Mark Hebblewhite, Mark S. Boyce, Jacqueline L. Frair

With the advent of new technologies, animal locations are being collected at ever finer spatio-temporal scales. We review analytical methods for dealing with correlated data in the context of resource selection, including post hoc variance inflation techniques, ‘two-stage’ approaches based on models fit to each individual, generalized estimating equations and hierarchical mixed-effects models. These methods are applicable to a wide range of correlated data problems, but can be difficult to apply and remain especially challenging for use–availability sampling designs because the correlation structure for combinations of used and available points are not likely to follow common parametric forms. We also …
