Case Analyses Of Standard Accounting Practices, Warren N. Ball Jan 2017

Case Analyses Of Standard Accounting Practices, Warren N. Ball

Honors Theses

The completion of this thesis is due mostly in thanks to ACCY 420, a class designed by the Patterson School of Accountancy and taught by Dr. Victoria Dickinson that gives accounting students a structured process for designing their theses on purposeful accounting topics. During my Junior and Senior years, there was a whirlwind of activity surrounding accounting students: accounting classes step into a new realm of difficulty, internship recruiting begins, and eventually my peers and I departed for multi-month internships. All of that activity left us with far less time to work on our theses than students in other academic …

Culture-Independent Analysis Of Microbial Communities Associated With Hydroponically Grown Living Lettuce, Abby Matthews Jan 2017

Culture-Independent Analysis Of Microbial Communities Associated With Hydroponically Grown Living Lettuce, Abby Matthews

Honors Theses

The bacteria associated on and within a plant make up that plant's microbiome. Given recent interest in how microbes can affect human health, as well as developments in DNA sequencing that allow us to examine microbial communities without culture techniques, a number of recent studies have investigated the composition of the microbial communities on edible plants. Leafy green salad vegetables pose an added interest, since they are consumed without sterilization or cooking. This study investigated the bacterial composition of endophytic and epiphytic communities of hydroponically grown green leaf lettuce that is sold with the roots intact and referred to as …

This study investigated whether romantic, parental, and peer relationship satisfaction influence eating behaviors and alcohol consumption through the self-concept. To test this hypothesis, 251 undergraduate students from the University of Mississippi completed an online survey in return for class credit. Participants first answered questions regarding their relationships with their parents, romantic partners, and close friends. These questions were adapted from the Couple's Satisfaction Index (Funk & Rogge, 2007). Next, to assess the self-concept, self-esteem, and objectification participants completed the Robson Self Concept Questionnaire (Robson, 1989), The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (Rosenberg,1965), and The Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (McKinley, & Hyde, …

Judicial Behavior And The Miranda Doctrine: A Question-Level Analysis, Gretchen Edelman Jan 2017

Judicial Behavior And The Miranda Doctrine: A Question-Level Analysis, Gretchen Edelman

Honors Theses

The attitudinal model of the Supreme Court is now a well accepted and valid way to explain the voting behavior of justices, as judicial prefer- ences dictate the eventual voting that occurs in cases. While many studies have looked at overall judicial ideologies through a variety of different mea- sures, this paper is the first that looks at judicial ideology and determines preferences within a single doctrine through a question level analysis us- ing ideal point estimation. To explore this measure of ideology inside a single-issue area I use the Miranda doctrine and its progeny cases to score judicial votes …

A Hardware Algorithm For Self-Balancing Binary Search Trees, Joseph Deiermann Jan 2017

A Hardware Algorithm For Self-Balancing Binary Search Trees, Joseph Deiermann

Honors Theses

Binary search trees are binary trees with an ordering mechanism that makes the time to search for any given item within the tree is greatly reduced compared to an unordered array of numbers. More specifically, a balanced binary search tree is faster at finding a specific item in the tree than an unbalanced tree. There are several algorithms that can automatically balance a binary search tree. Most of them do this through rotations directly in their respective insert functions. These algorithms are mostly implemented in software. This paper will present a hardware-based algorithm to balance binary search trees. This algorithm …

Honors Theses

At the University of Mississippi, just 4.93% (2014) and 6% (2015) of Human Anatomy and Physiology students responding to an informal, opinion survey stated that their favorite lab activity was using microscopes. In addition, performance on lab practical questions involving the identification of specimens under a microscope is low with the average percent correct being as low as 31.85% and no higher than 41.94%. These numbers are troubling in that Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II are required courses for students desiring entry into many allied health professions where knowledge of tissues, obtaining samples for biopsy, and interpreting microscopic …

Action Understanding Via Mirror Neuron Systems: A Proposed Model For The Science And Treatment Of Stuttering, Madison Jones Jan 2017

Action Understanding Via Mirror Neuron Systems: A Proposed Model For The Science And Treatment Of Stuttering, Madison Jones

Honors Theses

Persistent developmental stuttering is generally considered to be a speech disorder characterized by repetitions, prolongations and postural fixations, and is relatively resistant to therapy. While mainstream stuttering therapy continues to rely on behavioral speech targets, recent research suggests that mirror neuron systems can be activated to temporarily induce natural sounding fluent speech in those who stutter via exposure to second speech signals. Despite the prevalence of speech-motor based stuttering treatments, a unified account of how and why fluency is enhanced through endogenous methods remains elusive. The purpose of these two exploratory studies is to further test the validity of the …

Effects Of Mutating Ctra-Binding Sites Within The Pile Promoter Of Caulobacter Crescentus, Sarah Chong Jan 2017

Effects Of Mutating Ctra-Binding Sites Within The Pile Promoter Of Caulobacter Crescentus, Sarah Chong

Honors Theses

This project investigated the regulation of pilA by the global transcriptional regulator CtrA in the dimorphic bacterium Caulobacter crescentus. The pilA gene encodes the pilin subunits which are polymerized into helical filaments to produce pili, and the gene is directly activated by CtrA such that filaments are produced after cell separation. The pilA promoter harbors three regions that have been shown to bind CtrA (Binding Regions 1, 2, and 3), and multiple CtrA recognition sites are found in these regions, which is unusual for CtrA-dependent promoters. However, none of the binding sites match the CtrA consensus binding sequence. The canonical …

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, William O'Keefe Jan 2017

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, William O'Keefe

Honors Theses

The following collection of case studies serves as an overview of important concepts in financial reporting. Every publicly traded company is subject to the same financial accounting standards, meaning these concepts have important real-world applications. The goal of this thesis was to investigate further into the specifics of these concepts to gain a better understanding of their impact on the decision-making processes of these companies. The standards that these companies must follow are not uniformly applied to all companies, so the majority of accountants' work comes from assuring that each company's subjective interpretation of the standards is appropriate. The end …

The Impact Of Simulated Microgravity On The Growth Of The Model Legume Plant Medicago Truncatula, Gemma Elizabeth Lionheart Jan 2017

The Impact Of Simulated Microgravity On The Growth Of The Model Legume Plant Medicago Truncatula, Gemma Elizabeth Lionheart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulated microgravity has been a useful tool to help understand plant development in altered gravity conditions. Thirty-one genotypes of the legume plant Medicago truncatula were grown in either simulated microgravity on a rotating clinostat, or a static, vertical environment. Twenty morphological features were measured and compared between these two gravity treatments. Within-species genotypic variation was a significant predictor of the phenotypic response to gravity treatment in 100% of the measured morphological and growth features. In addition, there was a genotype–environment interaction (G×E) for 45% of the response variables, including shoot relative growth rate (p < 0.0005), median number of roots (p ∼ 0.02), and root dry mass (p < 0.005). These findings are discussed in the context of improving future studies in plants space biology by controlling for genotypic differences, and by connecting traits to their underlying genetic causes by using genome-wide association (GWA) mapping. In the long-term, manipulation of genotype effects, in combination with M. truncatula’s symbiotic relationships with rhizobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, will be important for optimizing legumes for cultivation on long-term space missions.

Risk, Reward, And The Role Of Habitat Selection On Community Dynamics In Temporary Ponds, Matthew Robert Pintar Jan 2017

Risk, Reward, And The Role Of Habitat Selection On Community Dynamics In Temporary Ponds, Matthew Robert Pintar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The processes that generate patterns of species diversity within and among habitat patches are a fundamental topic of interest in ecology. Traditionally, there was a focus on post-colonization effects such as predation, however, pre-colonization processes, such as habitat selection, are equally important determinants of community structure. In freshwater systems, the lethal effects of dominant predators (particularly fish) are well established, while the transition from permanent to temporary ponds is a defining characteristic. This transition produces distinct communities characterized by organisms with complex life cycles and plastic developmental strategies. This means that many organisms occupying habitat patches arrive there by the …

Final Muon Cooling For A Muon Collider, John Gabriel Acosta Castillo Jan 2017

Final Muon Cooling For A Muon Collider, John Gabriel Acosta Castillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To explore the new energy frontier, a new generation of particle accelerators is needed. Muon colliders are a promising alternative if muon cooling can be made to work. Muons are 200 times heavier than electrons, so they produce less synchrotron radiation, and they behave like point particles. However, they have a short lifetime of 2.2 μs and the beam is more difficult to cool than an electron beam. The Muon Accelerator Program (MAP) was created to develop concepts and technologies required by a muon collider. An important effort has been made in the program to design and optimize a muon …
